2.

The data displayed here represent the six months electricity bill amount (April-Sept, 2023) for a
random sample of 50 two-bedroom apartments in the city Muscat.

a) Construct the continuous frequency distribution with suitable number of exclusive classes which
can cover the entire data (neither less than 5 nor more than 15).

b) Compute mean, median, mode and standard deviation

Mean

formulaof mean=
∑x
n

Here n= 50

We can find summation of x by adding all given values

7353
formulaof mean=
50

mean=147.06

Median is the mid value

If we arrange data in to ascending order and by adding mid two values we get
Median =148.5

Mode is most repeated value hence

Mode =130,149

d) Comment on the shape of the curve (symmetric or asymmetric) on the basis of the results obtained in
part (c). Sketch a rough graph to show the skewness, if there, and compare the graph drawn in part (b)

Since mean median and mode are not approximately equal hence curve is asymmetric.

3. The following table contains the probability distribution of the number of traffic accidents daily in a
small city:

Number of Accidents Daily (X) Probability P(X=x) or p(x)

0 0.10
1 0.20
2 0.45
3 0.15
4 0.05
5 0.05

Find the probability of

a) Number of accidents less than 4

Solution
P ( X < 4 ) =P ( X=0 )+ P ( X =1 ) + P ( X=2 ) + P ( X =3 )
P ( X < 4 ) =0.10+0.20+ 0.45+0.15
P ( X < 4 ) =0.9
b) Number of accidents at most 4
P ( X ≤ 4 )=1−P( X ≥ 4)
P ( X ≤ 4 )=1−P ( X =5 )

P ( X ≤ 4 )=1−0.05
P ( X ≤ 4 )=0.95
c) Compute mean/expected value and standard deviation
Mean
E ( X )=∑ X × P ( X )
Standard deviation is
sd=√ varience
And varience=E ( X )−E ( X )
2 2

Now our task is to calculate E ( X 2) ∧E( X)2

E ( X 2) = ∑ X 2 × P ( X )
For our convenience draw table

X P(X) X ×P(X ) 2
X ×P(X)
0 0.10 0 0
1 0.20 0.20 0.20
2 0.45 0.9 1.8
3 0.15 0.45 1.35
4 0.05 0.2 0.8
5 0.05 0.25 1.25
∑ X × P ( X )=2 ∑ X 2 × P ( X )=5.4

Mean
E ( X )=∑ X × P ( X ) =2
¿
E ( X ) =∑ X 2 × P ( X ) =5.4
2

varience=E ( X 2 )−¿
varience=5.4−4
varience=1.4

sd=√ varience
sd=√ 1.4
Hence standard deviation is 1.1832
