Aggregate Storage

HMA is mixture of Aggregate

and asphalt binder

Aggregate are stored in

stockpiles or silos

Cold Feed Bins
Aggregates go from Stockpile to
cold feed bin in a front-end loader.

Cold feed bins meter the different

aggregates in the mix to the drum.

The amount controlled by a gate in

the bin and conveyor belt speed.

Aggregate Conveyor
A conveyor transfers the
aggregate to the dryer where
it is dried and heated.

A weigh scale weighs the

aggregate before the dryer so
the amount of asphalt cement
can be accurately added.

Dryers

Aggregates dried and heated in the dryer drum - tumbled through hot
air. The hot air comes from dryer a burner in the end of the drum.

Emission Control

Hot air passing through the

plant picks up some particles.

. Removed by the emissions

control system before air
goes into the atmosphere.

Most of the dust is collected

and returned to the mix.

Batch Tower
(only in Batch Plant)

Dried hot aggregate

goes from the dryer to
the batch tower.

Separated by size and

stored in hot bins.

Weighed into the

hopper.

Batch Tower
After weighing aggregate
dropped into pugmill where
it is mixed with the asphalt.

Asphalt added by a weigh

bucket or a pump and meter
system.

Mix is deposited in a truck or

in a storage silo

Drum Plant

• Mix is made continuously.

• Asphalt added after the aggregate has been dried and heated.

• Mix is moved to a storage silo where it is loaded into trucks.

Storage Silos
Store the mix until it is
ready to be transported and
placed.

They are insulated and may be

heated to prevent heat loss. A mix
may be stored in a silo for days.

Mix discharged from the silo into

trucks for transport to the paving
site.

Control Room
HMA plants control production
with computers and automation.

If necessary plants may still be

operated manually.

Hot-Mix Asphalt Plants

✓ Batch and drum mix plants are capable of producing quality HMA for
highways, airports, parking lots, bike trails, and other structures.

✓ The type of plant used by a contractor is a business decision

dependent on cost and market.
