Introduction

Physical Education (PE) stands as a cornerstone in nurturing holistic

development and well-roundedness among students, transcending the mere

physical aspects of fitness to encompass a broader spectrum of essential learning

competencies. In the Philippine educational landscape, the Most Essential Learning

Competencies (MELCs) serve as the guiding framework, delineating the core

knowledge and skills students are expected to acquire. Integrating Laron Pinoy into

PE classes enriches the educational experience and teach students how to preserve

our traditional games.

Traditional Filipino Games or Indigenous games in the Philippines are games

commonly played by children, usually using native materials or instruments. In the

Philippines, due to the limited resources of toys for Filipino children, they usually

invent games without the need of anything but the players themselves. The

application of traditional games in physical education learning can not only

increase students’ activity but also can be used to preserve culture. Traditional

games are a first-rate pedagogical tool available to physical education teachers

(Saputra et al, 2021).

The Purpose of this research is to contribute valuable insights that transcend the

confines of conventional PE strategies. By integrating Larong Pinoy into PE

classes and its implication on students’ perception and achievement of MELCS,

this research can enrich the cultural vibrancy and fostering inclusive approach to

physical education.

Theoretical Background

This study is anchored on the Mason’s Play theory, Piaget’s Social Theory and

John Dewey’s Learning by doing theory.

He pointed out that man is an active creature that his physiological and

emotional structures place limits on the activity and the degree of physical fitness

at any time affects the kind of activity that he/she engages, and that physiological

needs and learned responses, habits or attitude propel him/her into certain types.

Introduced by psychologist Albert Bandura, proposed that learning occurs

through observation, imitation, and modeling and is influenced by factors such as

attention, motivation, attitudes, and emotions. The theory accounts for the

interaction of environmental and cognitive elements that affect how people learn.

The theory suggests that learning occurs because people observe the consequences

of other people's behaviors. Individuals learn sportsmanship through observational

learning and social reinforcement. This implies that coaches can serve as role

models and distribute rewards for desirable sportsmanlike traits in sports.

John Dewey's educational philosophy emphasizes the concept of "Learning by

Doing," placing significant emphasis on experiential education. Central to Dewey's

ideas are the objects of knowledge and their relationship with the learner. As

mentioned, Dewey posits that knowledge is not merely passively received but

actively constructed by the learner through experience. The process of learning,

thus, becomes a dynamic interaction between the learner and the object of

knowledge (Main, 2023). In order for the students to learn the different types of

Larong Pinoy, students’ themselves must engage in different Larong Pinoy to learn

basic skills. Majority of these learners are kinesthetic type of learners.

These three theories contribute this research. Mason’s Play Theory highlights

the importance of physical activity and the level of physical fitness of the students,

Bandura’s Social learning theory emphasizes on social influences, sportsmanship,

motivation and observational learning, and lastly, Dewey’s Learning by doing

theory emphasizes hands-on experiences.

The conceptual framework presented is a holistic approach by considering input

variables related to the profile of the respondents in terms of age, sex, and game

preference. By incorporating MELCS into construction of survey questionnaires

and the integration of Larong pinoy into PE classes, this variable ensures that this

research is closely tied to the core educational objectives. The output variable

emphasizes the improvement and enrichment of students’ educational experience

in PE classes.

Statement of the Problem

The objective of this study is to determine the integration of Larong Pinoy and

the attainment of MELCS in PE. The following sub questions will be used to

formulate the main research questions:

1. What is the Profile of the students in terms of:

1.1. Sex

2. What are the pre and post cores of the respondents?

3. What is the level of perception to the agreement of the respondents towards

their experience of the Larong Pinoy to the different components of

MELCS?

4. Is there a significant effect on the students’ profile and their perception from

their experience of the Larong Pinoy to the different components of

MELCS?

5. Is there a significant difference between the pre and post scores of the

student respondents?

Statement of Hypothesis:

Ho: There is no significant effect on the students’ profile and their perception from

their experience of the Larong Pinoy to the different components of MELCS.

Methodologies

This part discusses the method of research used in the study-the design,

environment, respondents, instrument, procedure, and statistical treatment/data.

Research Design:

This study will use a descriptive research design.

Research Environment:

This study will be conducted at St. Paul University Dumaguete. St. Paul University

has great facilities where students can play their desirable sport. They have 3

basketball courts which can also be used to play other sports, they also have a

soccer field, and lastly, they have a swimming pool which is very beneficial for

everyone especially for the swimmers. SPUD has sports programs during summer

so that students will be engaged in different sports during summer time. SPUD is

also known for their grade athletes, especially from the senior high school which

has a lot of student athletes.

Research Respondents:

The respondents of this study will be one grade 10 section. The census sampling

technique will be utilized.

Research Instrument and procedure:

The researcher will address a permission letter to the school principal in St. Paul

University Dumaguete for the floating of survey questionnaires.

After obtaining the approval, the researcher will integrate Larong Pinoy in his PE

class. After the Playing of Larong Pinoy, the researcher will distribute survey

questionnaires that are based and modified from Most Essential Learning

Competencies (MELCS).

Statistical Tool

This study will use the following statistical tools.

To determine the profile of the respondents’ descriptive statistics will be utilized.

Specifically, Frequency Count and Histogram will be utilized.

To determine the significant effect on the students’ profile and their perception

from their experience of the Larong Pinoy to the different components of MELCS,

regression analysis will be utilized.

Significance of the Study

Findings of this study would be beneficial to the following:

Students: Students are the primary beneficiaries of this research, as this study

emphasizes on preserving the Larong Pinoy and improving their physical fitness.

The students researcher: this study will help the future researcher in enhancing

their knowledge in the different Larong Pinoy and they can also use this research

as a guide for their future research paper.

Teachers: Physical Education teachers will develop and integrate Larong Pinoy in

PE classes. They can also benefit from the study’s findings.

Parents: This research will help parents encourage their children playing the

different Larong Pinoy activities rather than playing online games inside their

house.
