Sheet 5: Free Vibrations of SDOF Systems
Solution of undamped and underdamped SDOF Systems

1. A wheel is mounted on a steel shaft (G = 83 x 109

N/m2) of length 1.5 m and radius 0.80 cm. The
wheel is rotated 5o and released. The period of
oscillation is observed as 2.3 s. Determine the
mass moment of inertia of the wheel and the
maximum angular velocity

2. A mass of 5 kg is dropped onto the end of a

cantilever beam with a velocity of 0.5 m/s, as
shown in Figure. The impact causes vibrations of
the mass, which sticks to the beam. The beam is
made of steel (E = 210 x 109 N/m2), is 2.1 m long,
and has a cross-section area moment of inertia
I=3*10–6 m4. Neglect inertia of the beam and
determine the response of the mass.

3. The 3-kg target slides freely along the smooth

horizontal guides BC and DE, which are ‘nested’
in springs that each have a stiffness of k = 9
KN/m. If a 60 g bullet is fired with a velocity of
30 m/s and embeds into the target, determine the
amplitude and frequency of oscillation of the
target and the time required to reach its maximum
displacement.

4. An assembly plant uses a hoist to raise and

maneuver large objects. The hoist shown in the
figure is a winch attached to a beam that can move
along a track. Determine the natural frequency of
the system when the hoist is used to raise an 800
kg machine part at a cable length of 9 m.

5. A bullet of mass m = 10 kg travelling with a
velocity v = 50 m/s strikes and becomes
embedded in a massless board supported by a
spring of stiffness k = 64 KN/m and a dashpot
with damping coefficient c = 400 N.s/m.
Determine the time required to the board to
reach the maximum displacement and find
the value of the maximum displacement.

6. An underdamped shock absorber is to be designed for a motorcycle of mass

200 kg. When the shock absorber is subjected to an initial vertical velocity due
to a road bump, the resulting displacement-time curve is to be as indicated in
the figure. Find the necessary stiffness and damping constants of the shock
absorber if the damped period of vibration is to be 2 s and the amplitude is to
be reduced to one-fourth in one half cycle.

7. The amplitude of vibration of the system shown

in figure decays to half of its initial value in 11
cycles with a period of 0.3 s. Determine the
spring stiffness and the viscous damping
coefficient.
