INTRODUCTION

Bioelectrochemical systems (BESs) are

environmental biotechnologies that involve
microbial interfacial electron transfer and
electrochemical transformations for
achieving sustainable energy and carbon
neutrality
PROJECT OVERVIEW

Fundamentals of BESs: BESs are

generally described as systems that
imply electrode reactions by using
microorganisms as biocatalyst. They
merge microbial and electrochemical
processes to produce bioelectricity, H2 or
other valuable chemicals
COMPONENTS OF BES

A classic BES system is comprised of two

electrodes, an anode and a cathode linked
to each other by using an external
conductive wire for completing an electric
circuit
MICROBIAL FUEL CELLS (MFCS)

MFCs are employed for electricity

generation. In MFCs, wastewater can
be used as a source of bacteria and
energy, and during the process,
organics from the wastewater can be
removed, thus treating the wastewater
MICROBIAL ELECTROLYSIS CELLS
(MECS):

Microbial Electrolysis Cells (MECs):

MECs use electricity to drive chemical
reactions such as the production of H2
and/or other valuable chemicals in the
cathode compartment
MICROORGANISMS IN BES:

In BESs, unique types of

microorganisms are the crucial
players that can transport
electrons from their
intracellular electron transport
chain to an external solid
electron acceptor (electrode)
or vice versa
APPLICATIONS OF BESS:

BESs have a plethora of applications including

electricity production via oxidation of the waste
biodegradable substrates in the anode compartment
and the use of this electricity (along with additional
required energy) for production of chemicals and
energy carriers (such as H2) in the cathode
compartment
