ARITHMETIC PRACTICE VIDEO 1

Mistakes and concepts

Q3.

Solution: (Number of odd integers from 35 to 85 = (85-35 /2) +1 = 26)

(Median/ Average = (35 + 85) / 2= 60)

(Now, Number of odd integers x Average = 26 x 60 = 1560 = sum)

Concept: Sum= Number x Average, Median = Average

Q4. How many powers of 900 are in 50!?

A) 2
B) 4
C) 6
D) 8
E) 10

Solution: 900 = 9 x 100 = 32. 22.52

50! = 1x2x3………x50

There are multiples 2s and 3s in 50! but a limited number of 5s, so we count 5s to see how
many 900s are possible

5, 15,25,35,45,50

C) 6

Concepts: Factorial, logic

Q5.

Mistake: When it says 4 percent greater that refers to (1.04), 14 percent means (1.14) and
40 percent is 1.40

Q7.

Solution: Assuming x=1, 243. 332. 173. 92

We use cyclicity of numbers to determine the units digit, for 243 it is 4 (43= 64), for 332 it is
(32= 9), for 173 (it is 73= 343), for 92 it is (81)

So, 4.9.3.1 = 108, the answer is 8.

Concept: Cyclicity of numbers

Q9.

Solution: A) -5 and -3 = -8
B) Not applicable

C) 15 and 17 = 22

D) 25 and 27 = 52

E) 125 and 127 =252

Concept: -5 is smaller than -3 to be kept in mind

Q10.

Solution: f(10) = 10!

Odd factors = 34,52,7,

Number of combinations of these numbers (including 0 because 30=1) -> 5.3.2 = 30

Concept: Combinations

Mistakes and concepts

Q3. A: 34/ 0.339

B: 100

Solution: We multiply both sides with 0.339 to get A: 34 and B: 33.9, so A is larger

Concept: manipulating LHS and RHS by the same numbers to get a comparable value

Q4. k is a positive integer

A: 1/2k
B: 1/3k + 1/3k

Solution: We assume 2 cases, k=1 and k=2 to get the answer, A: 1/21= 1/2 and 1/22= 1/4

For B, 1st we simplify as 2/3k and then plug, 2/31= 2/3 and 2/32= 2/9

Comparing case 1 with LCM method: (3,4/6), so here B is bigger

Case 2: (9, 8)/36, so here A is bigger

Answer is (D) Cannot be determined

Concept: Plugging values, 0 is not positive, it is non-negative but does not qualify as a
positive integer

Q7.

Mistake: In the last bit- what fraction of total students (not second year students)
Q8.

Solution: Difference between air remaining in the vacuum and air removed

Here, air remaining in the vacuum after 4 strokes = (1/2)4 = (1/16)

So, air removed = 1-1/16 = 15/16

Concept: We can’t assume air removed to 100 because the reductions to have will lead to
decimals like 100, 50, 25, 12.5, 6.25, we could but then we would add 50 + 25 + 12.5 and
6.25 and then divide by 100 to get 0.9375 then further check by converting options to
decimals

We can assume air to be 16 to get 8,4,2,1, adding these we get 15/16

Q9. How many prime numbers between 1and 100 are factors of 1750?

A) One
B) Two
C) Three
D) Four
E) Five

Solution: Simply prime factorize 1750 to get 175 x 10= 5 x 143 x 5 x 2, here 143 = 11 x 13, so
prime factors = 4

Concept: Knowing when to prime factorize

Q11.

Solution: If n2/72 = integer, then let’s assume n2 = 72, n2= 2332, So n should be equal to at
least 22.31 (Not 21 because n = 12, and 12 is the largest possible value that must divide n).
