ABSTRACT

Measuring the respondents’ knowledge in terms of Ship Installation and other Fire
Fighting Appliances and Agents on board is the prime objective of this research. The researchers’
goal is to get the answers from the BSMT students more specifically in the third year. The
motivation of this research is to get the result whether how ready the future seafarers are and how
they will be able to handle strategies and how they navigate a certain situation that links with
Ship Installations and any Fire Fighting Appliances that is on board. The primary subject matter
includes: Fire detection and Alarm Systems, Fire Alarms, Fixed Automatic Sprinklers, Fixed
Steam System, Fixed foam extinguishers, Fixed CO2 system, Fire flaps and dampers, Automatic
and manual fire doors and Emergency shut off valves, pump stops and engine stops. After all, this
proposal will benefit every student that is under this course, by measuring the examinees with this
factual information and keeping the study a relevant one.

CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS SCOPE

INTRODUCTION

Rationale of the Study

The STCW or the Standards of Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping came into
force in 1978 as Governments agreed to standardize training around the world. STCW Basic
Safety Training, as it is known today is required by all seafarers who are working on board
commercial ships or Superyachts. That is why it is not only vital but also necessary that deck
cadet students must be knowledgeable about the ship’s fixed installations and other firefighting
appliances and agents on board so that they may able to perform their duty well with high regard
to safety standards. According to Bhattacharjee (2020), generally, a part of the 3rd Mate’s duties
and responsibilities, lifesaving appliances (LSA) and firefighting appliances (FFA) are assigned
to the cadets so that they learn the procedures of noting down expiry dates, carrying out repair
work, checking for any defects, emailing the company for ordering new products, etc. In the
process, a cadet ends up learning a great deal about how each piece of equipment functions and
also a lot about the lifeboats, life rafts, pyrotechnics, SOLAS Regulations, etc. All such
information ends up being extremely useful when appearing for the 2nd Mates’s examination. In
conclusion, the assessment of how much the student had learned about the ship’s safety
awareness and other firefighting appliances and agents on board will have a great impact in
his/her apprenticeship as well as on his/her future career as a seafarer. Knowledge and safety-
awareness are primary weapons that not only the deck cadet must have but as well as the officers
on board for them to flourish in their maritime career. As early as possible, adequate training and
moral disciplining are vital.
2

Theoretical Background

This study is anchored to Bruner’s Constructivism theory (2015), Constructivism as a

paradigm or worldview posits that humans construct knowledge and meaning from their
experiences. In providing students with interactive learning regarding the ship’s fixed
installations and other firefighting appliances and agents onboard students may able to have
efficient learning and will equip them with knowledge when they got on board.

According to Kolb (2017), Experiential learning theory is the process whereby

knowledge is created through the transformation of experience. In the process of learning, deck
cadets can also acquire valuable insight regarding the ship’s fixed

installations and other firefighting appliances and agents on board.

According to Kelly (1950), Personal construct theory suggests that people develop
personal constructs about how the world works, then use these constructs to make sense of their
observations and experiences. By providing deck cadets with additional information regarding the
ship’s fixed installations and other firefighting appliances and agents on board the deck cadets
can evaluate the genuineness of their knowledge and therefore avoiding false knowledge
regarding the certain topic.
3

Review of Related Literature

According to the SHM Shipcare (2019), Fire is one of the major causes of accidents that
occur on board a ship. Ships carry bulk amounts of combustible cargo, flammable substances like
oil and petrol in addition to other igneous machines for trade. That is why having a well-oriented
and highly trained crew is a must when going onboard. As early as now, deck cadets should have
a great deal of knowledge regarding the ship’s fixed installations and other firefighting appliances
and agents on board. Also, which is why these ships must be equipped with the required
appliances to control the spread of fires before they become unmanageable. In cases of fire
emergencies, it is also imperative to check if all the ships meet the necessary safety standards and
are equipped with important fire-fighting appliances.

According to Marinelookout (2016), poor maintenance of Life-Saving Appliances (LSA)

And Fire Fighting Appliances (FFA) onboard the vessel and improper training of crew may cause
PSC deficiency, which may lead to fine or unnecessary delay in ship’s operation. care must be
taken while doing maintenance of LSA and FFA to avoid the above situations. also, training of
ship’s personal should be done according to the company’s procedures. Deck cadets before going
onboard must have the proper training and must be well oriented about the safety procedures and
appliances onboard so they may become responsible officers in their career.

According to Mohit (2020) Without doubt, one of the main causes of accidents onboard
ships is fire. This is because of the presence of high temperature, the excess quantity of
flammable oil, and other combustible materials. A ship is approved to sail in international waters
only if it is constructed as per the Fire Safety System code and carries required Fire Fighting
Appliances approved by the concerned authority. A ship is fitted with various types of fire
retardant and firefighting equipment to fight any kind of fire and extinguish it as soon as possible
before it turns into a major catastrophic situation. The ship is equipped with fixed installations
that can help prevent fire from spreading, but it is within the crew’s ability and preparedness that
will matter in times of emergency. That is why a well-trained crew is a must onboard to prevent
or minimize the impact of this kind of accident like fire.
4

In addition, according to Rogers (1968), In humanistic theory, the teacher is a facilitator

to learning rather than just a conveyor of knowledge and he noted that it is not the outcome that is
the most important part of education, it is the process of learning itself. The Humanistic approach
is learner-centric, with the emphasis on the individual’s potential rather than the specific learning
materials online or offline, sowing for a meaningful and facilitating experience that the students
can apply when studying about ship’s fixed installations and other firefighting appliances and
agents on board to make sure that the teachers have facilitate the students well that may
contribute to their greater learning.

Moreover, according to Dreikur (1968), the Classroom Management theory states that
mutual respect should be the basis for discipline and that this mutual respect motivates learners to
display positive behaviors. When teaching students regarding ship’s fixed installations and other
firefighting appliances and agents on board, the teachers must respect the difference in each
student’s ability to store knowledge. Not all students are fast learners and each student has a
different learning style they are comfortable with that is why respect on both sides is necessary to
productive learning.

Furthermore, according to Laird (1985), The sensory theory stated that learning occurs
when the five senses of sight, hearing, touch, smell, and taste are stimulated, he suggests that if
multi-senses are stimulated, greater learning takes place. By providing students with a variety of
learning material regarding the ship’s fixed installations and other firefighting appliances and
agents on board.

respondents were Female that is 3 out of 27 respondents.
10

The researcher-made survey was accomplished by the use of Google Survey Forms. The
questionnaire is composed of 2 sections, 1 st section is a Likert scaled question while the 2 nd
section is a multiple-choice quiz type question. After several improvements on the questionnaire,
it was sent to a group chat for randomly selected third-year regular deck cadets of the University
of Cebu – Lapu-Lapu, and Mandaue. The summary of results is represented in the table below.

CHAPTER 3

CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

DISCUSSION

RECOMMENDATION

It was evident from the results that the majority of the respondents rate themselves with a
very good extent of knowledge with regards to the ship’s fixed installations and other firefighting
appliances and agents onboard. This is further supported by the conducted online quiz wherein
82% of the respondents t satisfactory to outstanding scores. However, there are some topics that
the respondents don’t have very good knowledge which is subject to improvements to further
attain a high level of learning and safety awareness from cadets.

The table below ranks the topics that have a rate of below Very Good:

Table 2.1

Topic Mode Interpretation

Fixed Steam System 4 Average

Fire Flaps and Dampers 5 Good

Automatic and Manual Fire

The researchers suggest that some alternative strategies in teaching like practical
demonstration may be applied to the cadets to obtain Very Good remarks in their extent of
knowledge regarding the topic. According to de Lucy, W. (2018) practical education boosts a
student’s self-esteem, knowledge, and skills (both educationally and on the outside world), and
enhances their transition into working life. With the competition for jobs increasing, employers
are now looking to hiring candidates who can demonstrate their skills rather than reeling off a list
of empty, theoretical qualifications.

CONCLUSION

Based on the results of the surveys it turns out that the majority of the 3 rd year regular
deck cadets have above good or satisfactory knowledge with regards to Ship’s Fixed Installations
and other Fire Fighting Appliances and Agents on board. However, there are some fields in the
topic that needs more efficient teaching or training to attain a high level of knowledge from deck
cadets. Specifically, these are Fixed Steam System, Fire Flaps and Dampers, and Automatic and
Manual Fire Doors. It was also evident in the study that not all students have above satisfactory
grades from the Multiple-Choice Quiz that is given to them. For that reason, the researchers
suggest that some alternative strategies in teaching like practical demonstration may be applied to
the cadets to obtain Very Good remarks and above Satisfactory grades in their extent of
knowledge regarding the topic. This will help them prepare for their onboard ship training after
their academic years. As a result, by reinforcing efficient strategies that contribute to their
learning, the number of seafarers that lose their life at sea is reduced because of being
14

knowledgeable and having awareness with regards to Ship’s Fixed Installations and other Fire
Fighting Appliances and Agents on board.
