Quiz #4

Show the details of your own complete solution with necessary diagrams!

1. Nitrous oxide, a gas used as an anesthetic, is contained in a rigid steel bottle

10 cm in diameter and 0.6 m long. The bottled contains 0.2 kg of gas and the
temperature in the operating theater is 15oC. Assuming the molecular weight
of nitrous oxide, MW = 44 kg/kmole, determine
a. The pressure of the gas in the bottle
b. The pressure of the gas if the bottle is used in a battle-field operating
theatre in the desert where the temperature is 450C.

2. 1 m3 of air at 8 bar and 1200C is cooled to 270C at constant pressure. How

much heat is rejected in the process and what is the volume of the air after
cooling?

3. In an industrial process 0.4 kg of oxygen is compressed isothermally from

1.01 bar and 220C to 5.5 bar. Determine the work done and the heat
transfer during the process.

4. In a reciprocating compressor 0.1m3 of air at 0.95 bar and 320C is

compressed according to the law PVn =constant until the pressure is 7 bar.
Determine the volume and temperature of the air after compression, the
work done on the air and the heat rejected to the cylinder walls assuming
the compressor is water cooled and n = 1.1

5. In a thermally insulated reciprocating air compressor air at 0.98 bar and

200C is compressed into one sixth of its original volume. If the compressor
cylinder contains 0.05 kg of air, determine the pressure of the air after
compression and required work input.
