1
Question 1

(a) Evaluate
(x + h)3 − x3
lim
h→0 h
and state the geometrical interpretation of your result.
(4 marks)

(b) Let f : R → R defined by

 √
x−2

 , x>4
x − 4

f (x) = 2x − 7

q, x = 4

Determine the value of q such that f is continuous at 4.

(4 marks)

(c) Find f 0(x) directly from the definition of the derivative if

f (x) = sin x.
(5 marks)

(d) Consider the function y = f (x) defined implicitly near
(2, −2) by the equation
2xy + y 2 − x − y = −4.
Find the equation of the line tangent to this curve at (2, −2).

(ii) Determine the interval on which f is

(a) increasing, (b) decreasing. (4 marks)

(iii) On a clearly labelled diagram, give a sketch of the graph

of y = f (x).
