ABSTRACT

To meet the requirements of today’s world, engineering

students must have some practical knowledge. Only four years of
theoretical knowledge will not work to think out of box which is the
requirement of today’s competitive world. This vacuum created can
be filled through the exposure of actual practical world which can
fulfilled in college time through internship. This onsite exposure will
increase the candidate’s potential and will keep him/her one step
ahead, as well as give will learn to do end-to-end work.
This highlights the importance of the Practical training
curriculum, which is one of the most important aspects of a student's
college life because it provides the final centre of knowledge and
proper interpretation of what he has learned till date. The relevance of
academics is only shown as it is applied in real time, as this is the
reason for getting it all done properly, which includes proper
observation, analysis, and interpretation of as much of the actual
activity as possible, as well as having a good idea of how the same
operation is carried out end to end to having a clear applicability.
Interning at Phoenix Project pvt. Ltd. allowed me to study
multiple activities and gained a clear understanding of how a project
is carried out in real time and how professionals handle it. I learned
various activities at the site and I also came across management
activities such as assigning labours for particular work, procurement
of material well in advance, incentives to the labors.

3. Earth work

3.1 Pipe line Material: -

• PVC
• DI (Ductile iron)
• MS (Mild steel)
• HDPE (Highly Ductile Polyethylene)

1. PVC (Polyvinyl chloride)

PVC pipes are a safe choice for transportation of drinking water. This
is due to their high degree of inertness and resistance to corrosion.
PVC pipes are therefore free from bio-film contamination that can be
a breeding ground for bacteria. By helping provide clean water, PVC
pipes are beneficial to public health.

9
oo

PROJECT ID: 482939 Earth work

2. DI

Ductile Iron pipe is considered as the most preferred pipe material for
water supply and pressure sewerage application all over the world.
Pipes made from Ductile Cast Iron, provides substantial benefits in terms
of pressure bearing ability, impact resistance and capacity to sustain
external static/dynamic loading. Today, more than 600 utilities (in the
United States and Canada) have had Cast Iron mains in continuous service
for more than 100 years. Additionally, at least 21 utilities have had Cast
Iron mains in continuous service for more than 150 years.

10
oo

PROJECT ID: 482939 Earth work

3. HDPE

In use in potable water applications since the 1960s, high-density

polyethylene (HDPE) pipe has become the ideal material for piping
systems used to transport drinking water. As a tough and resilient material
capable of lasting 100 years or more with minimal maintenance, HDPE
pipe has proven to be superior to many other piping materials as a means
transporting and distributing potable water. HDPE pipe’s long service life
and low maintenance costs, coupled with its’ ability to be installed with a
variety of trench-less technologies leads to HDPE pipe having the lowest
life cycle costs of any potable water piping system.

11
oo

PROJECT ID: 482939 Earth work

4. MS

As MS Pipes are made from mild steel they can easily be welded and
formed in various shapes and sizes for pipelining and tubing purposes.
These are generally used for drinking water supply i.e. Plumbing,
Firefighting, HVAC but can also be used in various other Industrial and
Engineering applications.

3.2 Trenching: -

Trenching using excavator:

Excavators are heavy construction equipment consisting of a boom,

dipper (or stick), bucket and cab on a rotating platform known as the
"house". The house sits atop an undercarriage with tracks or wheels. They
are a natural progression from the steam shovels and often mistakenly
called power shovels. All movement and functions of a hydraulic
excavator are accomplished through the use of hydraulic fluid, with
hydraulic cylinders and hydraulic motors. Due to the linear actuation of
hydraulic cylinders, their mode of operation is fundamentally different
from cable-operated excavators which use winches and steel ropes to
accomplish the movements.

oo

PROJECT ID: 482939 Earth work

3.2.2 When using an excavator, there are a few safety

considerations to keep in mind.

1. Excavators only have one seat, which should be occupied by the

operator; no one else should be allowed in the bucket, cab, or anywhere
else on the machine.
2. Match your speed to the demands of the job.
3. When working on rough terrain or in congested areas, the excavator’s
speed should be reduced.
4. During transportation, the bucket should be kept lower to the ground to
improve visibility and machine stability.
5. When moving the excavator around the Job site, the flat route should be
chosen as much as possible.
6. When turning, the equipment should be driven as straight as possible
and only small gradual changes in direction should bemade.
7. Instead of moving diagonally up the slopes, the equipment should be
moved vertically.
8. When trenching the equipment should be leveled by placing dirt beneath
the tracks.
9. You should work with the propel motors at the back of the machine to
achieve better stability.
10. To avoid cave-ins, the soil should be dumped as far away from the
excavation site as possible.
11. If excavation is required on a slope, the machine should be levelled by
digging a shelf (or a bench cut).
12. When casting down a steep bench cut, you must cut far enough away
from the upper bank to allow for adequate swing clearance.

Blasting

Blasting is an effective solution when constructing an underground

pipeline through rock. It's the most cost-effective approach as well as the fastest
option when excavating your trench. Blasting also allows control, which is
essential in residential or commercial areas.
Companies rely on two methods for blasting trenches:
• Conventional: This technique uses a staggered, asymmetrical drilling
pattern andequal charging in every blast hole. The benefit it provides is
less ground
• Controlled: This method utilizes symmetrical drilling patterns and
charges blast holes at different levels. Center holes receive higher-
powered explosives. While controlled drilling produces higher
ground vibration levels, it causes fewer over-breaks.
oo

PROJECT ID: 482939 Earth work

3.3 Pipeline laying method

1) Open Trench Pipe laying

Suitable for all pipe diameters, open-trench pipe-laying is the most common
method.

To start with, a trench is excavated along the planned pipeline route. If the in-
situ soil does not offer a suitable pipe bed, the trench is deepened and bedded.
The pipes can then be lowered into the trench as a welded pipe string
oo

PROJECT ID: 482939 Earth work

2) Plowing

Plowing is a particularly eco-friendly technique, which can be used for pipes

up to DN 600, depending on the type of soil, pipe string length and pulling
force involved.

By means of a steel rope winch, a special tractor pulls the pipe-laying plow
through the soil. The share, which is adjusted to the pipe-laying level plows a
furrow into the soil through which the pipe string is pulled in. The displaced
soil immediately deposits itself on the pipe string. This makes the process
particularly fast, while reducing the impact on the land to an absolute
minimum
oo

PROJECT ID: 482939 Earth work

3) Horizontal Flush Drilling

The horizontal flush drilling technique is used in trenchless pipeline

construction and is particularly suitable for pipe-laying in densely built-up
urban areas or for crossings underneath water or buildings. The pilot hole is
drilled along a two- or three-dimensionally curved line between the entry
point (in front of the drill) and an exit point (on the opposite side of the
obstacle to be crossed under). The in-situ soil is loosened by a drill head at the
front end of the drill string. In the second step in controlled horizontal
drilling, the pilot hole is widened. Finally, the pipe string is pulled in from the
exit point into the widened borehole.
oo

PROJECT ID: 482939 Earth work

3.4 Pipeline Backfilling

• Backfilling shall be carried out immediately after pipeline lowering in

trench after inspection, so as to provide a natural anchorage for the
pipeline, thus avoiding long exposure of coating to high temperature,
damaging action of adverse weather conditions, sliding down of trench
sides and pipeline movement in the trench.
• Backfill material shall not contain any extraneous material or hard
lumps of soil which can damage pipeline or coating or leave the voids in
backfilled trench. After placing of initial backfill, proper compaction
shall be done.
• The surplus material shall be crowned (300 mm) directly over trench and
adjacent excavated area on both side of trench. If trench are excavated in
steep area where the slope is more than 10%, slope breakers shall be
installed to prevent erosion of backfill. Stabilization of backfill shall be
done in sandy area to have consolidated cover over the pipeline.

3.5 What is an air valve?

How can one prevent the formation of air and/or vacuum in water
supply systems? A solution would be an air valve, a special
hydromechanical flow control device that allows the metered flow of
fluid in one or both directions. Its function on a pipeline is to release
accumulated gases or admit air into the pipeline during the filling,
draining, or operation of the liquid pipeline systems.

3.6 Where to install air valves?

Choosing the right location for the installation of an air valve is very
important. To obtain maximum efficiency, the air valves are placed at
strategic locations on the pipeline’s run. For proper aeration and
ventilation of water and wastewater systems, air valves are required at
the following points:

Maximum High Points

Air bubbles accumulate and form air pockets that get stuck at the
highest points in the system. Placing air valves here helps ventilate the
air pockets out to the atmosphere.
Valve Required: Air release valve / combination valve.

Temporary High Points

Local high points can also serve as an accumulation spot for air
bubbles. An air valve here vents the bubbles out to the atmosphere.
Valve Required: Air release valve/combination valve.
oo

PROJECT ID: 482939 Earth work

Long Rising or Falling Pipe Sections

Dislodged air pockets can flow downstream and form larger air pockets
at the top section of the pipe. Also, rapid flow in downward sloping
pipe sections can form a vacuum. As a rule of thumb, air release valves
and air vacuum valves should be installed every 800m on long pipe runs
to properly vent anddraw air into the system.

Long Rising or Falling Pipe Sections

Dislodged air pockets can flow downstream and form larger air pockets
at the top section of the pipe. Also, rapid flow in downward sloping
pipe sections can form a vacuum. As a rule of thumb, air release valves
and air vacuum valves should be installed every 800m on long pipe runs
to properly vent and draw air into the system.

After Fast Closing Valves

When valves are suddenly shut off, vacuums can form downstream
from the valve due to the momentum of the flow. For proper
functioning of the pipe, the negative pressure needs to be relieved by
admitting air into the pipe.

After Flow Throttling / Boosting Devices

After flow throttling devices like turbines or control valves, the pressure
and velocity differences can lead to the formation of a vacuum. Air
vacuum valves are needed close to these devices to draw air into the
system Flow boosting devices like pumps and reduced pipe sections
also draw air bubbles into the flow. Air release valves need to be
installed after these devices to vent these air pockets.
oo

PROJECT ID: 482939 Earth work

Finally, always install your air valves at accessible, well-ventilated

locations. This ensures they always have enough air to draw into the
systems, and the air expelled has a route out. Also, it makes it easier to
reach the valves for maintenance.

PROJECT ID: 482939 Outcomes of Major Projects

4. Outcomes of Major Projects

An internship is a class taught on the job to provide students who graduate

a better grasp of the outside working world. Its major objectives are to
teach students how to communicate with various workers or employees, to
enhance the practical skills they received in the classroom, to upgrade the
theoretical knowledge outside of class, to enhance their leadership skills, to
enhance their team- playing skills, and other objectives. I learned a lot
about various responsibilities during my four months of internship. This
diverse knowledge helped me perform well throughout my internship, and
I gained experience that will be useful to me after I graduate and enter the
workforce.

4.1 Benefits Gained from Site

It goes without saying that students benefit greatly and learn a lot when
exposed to real-world situations. Similar to that, everything I learn and
know has real-world applications. My university's engineering course is a
cornerstone of my internship programmers. Theoretical understanding
always makes it simpler to comprehend real-world problems. Because of
these course materials, I can:

• Identify building materials

• To Know Material

• Control construction projects

26

Gujrat Technological University V.V.P. Engineering College

oo

PROJECT ID: 482939 Conclusion

• Be aware of work schedules

• Improve teamwork, practical skills, and leadership abilities.

Because of this mismatch, obstacles are the starting point for knowledge
acquisition or career objectives alignment. The site work, particularly for
construction work, is more of a matter-of-fact than theoretical yet I had
understood much of the theoretical just before the internship program. I
am better equipped to handle these difficulties and the building work
implementation method thanks to this internship program.

4.2 Understanding Work Ethics

The term "work ethics" refers to a system of moral norms or guidelines

that govern how members of a particular profession should behave. An
activity must be carried out by someone with advanced education,
knowledge, and abilities in order to be regarded as a profession.
Therefore, ethical work practices are crucial for creating a healthy work
atmosphere and increasing productivity.

Some of the common professional ethical rules that are followed in the
construction industry include the following:

• Impartiality

• Punctuality

• confidentiality

• Transparency and openness

• Avoiding probable or apparent conflict of interests

27

Gujrat Technological University V.V.P. Engineering College

oo

PROJECT ID: 482939 Conclusion

• respecting the work ethics

• combating corruption

• Presenting the report on time.

4.3 Challenges that were Faced

Construction projects are difficult, drawn-out tasks that necessitate the

engagement and cooperation of numerous people. The construction industry is
often separated into specialty areas, and to effectively engage in each field, a
certain set of skills, resources, and expertise are needed. It might be difficult for
one individual, especially when they are new or beginners, to integrate and work
closely in each section. In actuality, I might be able to overcome some problems,
but others are beyond my capabilities and even those of the site's employees. It
was anticipated that I would experience some difficulty throughout my four-
month internship program with the organization. I was, in fact, somewhat
challenged. These difficulties were not brought on by my lack of initiative in
completing the assignment I was assigned; rather, it was a simple issue of lack
of prior expertise in the sector. And that was a problem that might be fixed by
continuing to involve oneself in the activities over time. However, there were
certain issues that the company could have resolved, so what I did or should
have done wouldn't have made a significant difference.
I was a little perplexed during the program's first month. This was caused
by the fact that the company's employees, who undoubtedly had more
experience than I had, already knew the quickest ways to complete each of their
individual responsibilities correctly. Over time, there were times when I was
given complete control over a particular assignment, like preparing a quantity of
something for a project. At first, I didn't think I was up to the challenge, but over
time, I learned to welcome challenges with confidence. I had to communicate

28

Gujrat Technological University V.V.P. Engineering College

oo

PROJECT ID: 482939 Conclusion

with the staff members working at those locations while making my routine site
visits. These specialists had to utilize these common terminology while carrying
out their daily tasks, which at the time were unclear to me despite the fact that
they had extensive understanding of the construction industry. One could say
that they were speaking in a completely different language. Every piece of
construction equipment had its own name, and each operation had a description
that was distinct from what I had previously heard. I struggled to get the
working men's attention during those site visits as I tried to ask them
questions on the various things I had observed.

Given these roadblocks, it was evident that I needed to explore for options that
could significantly lessen the difficulties I was experiencing. And these actions
did contribute in a way that made it simpler to carry out the job flow. I
eventually had to force myself to pick up on how things were done in order to
prevent any gaps from being caused by me. In terms of my arrival time at the
workplace, I simply forced myself to accept the reality and got busy so I
wouldn't have to waste time hanging around in the office idle. developed my
self-assurance in taking on responsibilities by offering to do various jobs and
succeeding in doing them to the standards established by my superiors. I was
only able to learn the terminology by repeatedly attempting to use them in
conversations and asking questions when necessary if I wanted to understand
how the professionals on the building site used them.

PROJECT ID: 482939 Conclusion

5. Conclusion

The internship serves as a link between academic learning and real-

world application in the construction or civil engineering fields. All of us who are
enrolled in the internship course visit businesses where people are currently
employed as contractors or consultants. The hosting company's duties include
instructing students and molding them over the course of six months into actual
site workers. My host organization was a consultant and construction team, and
they assisted me in taking the internship session in their business to learn various
skills in various roles. In order to instruct us in that section, they work with the
contractors, and they think the civil engineering job is more crucial for us than
the consulting firm. This program was crucial in challenging the widespread
belief that only students with degrees or those with experience in building
construction could carry out fieldwork. We were able to develop a high level of
confidence to handle issues that arise during the construction of a structure. Since
I worked on the construction company's side, I am familiar with the overall
structure of the business, the work flow, and the responsibilities of the
engineers and other staff members. The process of building the various structural
components, such as the compound wall, wet well wall, and wet well raft.
finishing tasks like masonry work, plastering, etc. The difficulties of the projects
that the engineers will face and their solutions. management of the site's and
project's overall activities as well as the human resources. Additionally, I get
high quality and created confidential working with knowledgeable and
experienced engineers and foremen.
