So-called technical areas have been defined, into which the
companies will be assigned. The auditors must be able to
demonstrate corresponding skills for the respective techni-
cal areas. Under certain circumstances, this could result in
the need for some companies to change auditors.

ISO 50003 contains new calculation targets for determi-
ning the period of the audit. Companies must now specify
the number of so-called EnMS effective personnel. These
include senior management, energy management officers,
the energy management team as well as, in principle, every
person with a significant influence on EnMS. Moreover, the
number of significant energy users (SEUs) must be submit-
ted for the calculation. These specifications are to be used
from receipt of the accreditation certificate, for all initial
certifications, and for recertification audits. Changes to the
audit period may be necessary when compared to previous
calculation specifications.

Another “important change” requires companies to clearly
present their energy performance for examination at all
initial certification and recertification processes in order to
be awarded a certificate. Results of the certification deci-
sion are disclosed directly to the certification center. ISO
50003 puts even more focus on the improvement of energy
performance.
