TRANSLATION
There are also some thinkers who believe that no one can ascertain the cause of distress by
argumentation, nor know it by imagination, nor express it by words. O sage amongst kings,
judge for yourself by thinking over all this with your own intelligence.
PURPORT
As explained above, the Vaiñëavites, the devotees of the Lord, believe that nothing can take
place without the sanction of the Supreme Lord. He is the supreme director, for He confirms in
the Bhagavad-gétä (15.15) that He, as all-pervading Paramätmä, stays in everyone's heart as a
witness and keeps vigilance over all actions of the living being. The argument of the atheist that
one cannot be punished for one's misdeeds unless they are proved before a qualified justice is
refuted herein, for we accept the Lord as the perpetual witness and constant companion of the
living being. A living being may forget all that he might have done in his past or present life,
but one must know that in the same tree of the material body the individual soul and the
Supreme Soul, as Paramätmä, are sitting like two birds. One of them, the living being, is
enjoying the fruits of the tree, whereas the Supreme Being is there to witness the activities.
Therefore the Paramätmä feature, the Supreme Soul, is actually the witness of all activities of
the living being, and only by His direction can the living being remember or forget what he
might have done in the past. The Lord is therefore both the all-pervading impersonal Brahman
and the localized Paramätmä in everyone's heart. He is the knower of all—past, present and
future—and nothing can be concealed from Him. The devotees know this truth, and therefore
they discharge their duties sincerely, without being overly anxious for rewards.
Besides that, one cannot estimate the Lord's reactions, either by speculation or by scholarship.
Why does He put some into difficulty and not others? He is the supreme knower of the Vedic
knowledge, and thus He is the factual Vedäntist. At the same time He is the compiler of the
Vedänta. No one is independent of Him, and everyone is engaged in His service in different
ways. In the conditioned state, such services are rendered by the living being under force of the
material nature, whereas in the liberated state the living being is helped by the spiritual nature in
the voluntary loving service of the Lord. There is no incongruity or inebriety in His actions. All
are on the path of Absolute Truth. Bhéñmadeva correctly estimated the inconceivable actions of
the Lord. The conclusion is, therefore, that the sufferings of the representative of religion and
the representative of the earth, as present before Mahäräja Parékñit, were planned to prove
that Mahäräja Parékñit was the ideal executive head because he knew well how to give
protection to the cows (the earth) and the brähmaëas (religious principles), the two pillars of
spiritual advancement. Everyone being under the full control of the Lord, He is quite correct in
His action when He desires something to be done by someone, irrespective of the consideration
2

of the particular case. Mahäräja Parékñit was thus put to a test for his greatness. Now let us see
how he solves it by his sagacious mind.

wise man does not delight in them.

All the Upanisads are like a cow, and the milker of the cow is Sri Kåñëa, the son of Nanda.
Arjuna is the calf, the beautiful nectar of the Gita is the milk, and the fortunate devotees of fine
theistic intellect are the drinkers and enjoyers of that milk.
-----------------------------
Purport – Cows, milk.
Namo brahmanya devaya go brahmana hitaya ca……..
“In My last birth I was born in the family of cowherd men, and I gave protection to the
calves and cows. Because of such pious activities, I have now become the son of a
brähmaëa.” —Lord Caitanya (Caitanya-caritämåta, Ädi-lélä 7.111)
Lord Caitanya was teasing an astrologer who had determined that the Lord, in His past life, had
appeared as an incarnation of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. To have some fun with the
astrologer, Lord Caitanya ostensibly denied that He was the Supreme Lord, saying that in His
past life He had been merely a cowherd boy, and that only by His pious activities had He now
become a brähmaëa.

Vedic culture centers on the cow. In fact, without cows there can be no true Vedic culture. Veda
means “knowledge”—in the highest sense, spiritual knowledge. And as Çréla Prabhupäda
explains, cow protection and brahminical culture are “the two pillars of spiritual
advancement.” (Çrémad-Bhägavatam 1.17.20)
Now, it is easy for even an outsider to understand why brahminical culture is considered
indispensable for spiritual advancement. After all, brähmaëas are the disseminators of spiritual
knowledge and the exemplary maintainers of spiritual standards, just like the priestly class in
any society.
But what about cows? What do cows have to do with spiritual advancement? And why cows?
Why not sheep or goats or horses?
In his purport to Lord Caitanya’s statement above, Çréla Prabhupäda gives us the clue. “The
words of Lord Caitanya Mahäprabhu, the greatest authority, herein clearly indicate that one
becomes pious simply by keeping cows and protecting them.” How can that be? One reason is
that cows are emblems of the mode of goodness.
Of course, we know that God is never bound by any pious or apparently impious acts. Being the
ultimate cause of all karmic reactions, He Himself is transcendental to such cause and effect.
Nevertheless, even in His joking words we find important truthful instructions. Human beings
can become elevated by taking care of cows (or degraded by slaughtering them.)
If we examine the specific qualities of the brähmaëas, persons in the mode of goodness, we
can begin to see how those qualities are automatically cultured in a society that relies for
its economic base on farming and cow protection. In the Bhagavad-gétä (18.42), Kåñëa
lists the qualities of the brähmaëas: “Peacefulness, self-control, austerity, purity,
tolerance, honesty, knowledge, wisdom, and religiousness.” Let’s look at how a person
might develop these qualities by protecting cows.

message?

Realization of the Absolute Truth cannot be attained by pursuing logic, since one’s logic may
be defeated by a better logician; a philosopher does not become distinguished unless he defeats
all the previous philosophers; learning about the Absolute from the çästras is very difficult
because of their variety and grave meaning; but the Absolute Truth is hidden in the hearts of the
unalloyed pure devotees; therefore, one should follow the path of the mahäjanas – pure
devotees.

It is also stated in Kaöha Upaniñad (1.2.9):

The fact is that the Supreme Personality of Godhead, the Supersoul, cannot be attained simply
by explanations, logic and erudite scholarship. One cannot understand Him simply by one’s
brain substance. Even by studying all the Vedic literatures, one cannot understand the Supreme
Lord. However, if one is slightly favored by the mercy of the Lord, if the Lord is pleased, one
can understand Him.
