ECONOMY?
The lower house of Thailand has finally passed the delayed budget bill for the fiscal year 2024,
totaling 3.48 trillion baht. This new budget aims to increase spending in the Thai economy and
reduce the budget shortage by 0.3% to 693 billion baht compared to the previous year. Its approval
is seen as crucial for the recovery of Thailand's economy. The government has clarified that the
budget will be ready for use early next month, despite being delayed by a couple of months from its
original date set on October 1, 2023, due to political gridlock following a May election and the
current government was formed in August.
The delayed budget has had a noticeable
impact on government spending and the
economy, which unexpectedly contracted in the
last quarter of 2023. Full-year growth was
slower than expected at 1.9%, falling below the
2.5% growth seen in 2022.
Approximately 718 billion baht of the
budget is earmarked for investment,
underscoring the government's commitment to
boosting the economy through strategic
development projects. Although the budget was
support from 298 lawmakers, 166 opposed it,
indicating a strong but not unanimous
consensus on Thailand's economic recovery
strategy.

Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin has emphasized the budget's role in supporting the economy,
society, and people's living standards. He remains to fulfill his campaign promise of a controversial
500 billion baht handout scheme aimed at boosting growth. However, concerns have been raised
about its funding, the inflationary effects, and fiscal accountability.
The budget bill awaits approval from the Senate and royal before it can be use. The government
aims to apply the budget by early next month to provide much-needed stimulus to the Thai
economy. As Thailand faces with challenging economic conditions, the approval of the delayed

from attempting to replicate
its neighbor's tactic of paying artists
to avoid neighboring countries.
Instead, it should address Thailand's core
issue: despite being a favored tourist
destination, it lacks appeal as a prime
location for renowned concerts.
The Eras Tour, Swift's global tour, sparked regional political debate when Singapore's Prime
Minister Lee Hsien Loong disclosed that the country had paid her up to US$3 million (around 106
million baht) per concert in an exclusive agreement to host The Eras Tour solely in Singapore. This
revelation came after Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin hinted at a secretive deal involving Swift,
suggesting Thailand should follow suit.
While Singapore's controversial strategy may raise concerns, it serves as a wake-up call for
Thailand to examine why it fails to attract international artists. Singapore holds distinct
advantages over Thailand and its regional counterparts. Firstly, Singapore boasts top-tier
infrastructure and connectivity, including cutting-edge concert venues and efficient public
transport. Conversely, Bangkok's transportation systems, from airports to inner-city routes and
concert venues, lack integration.
Furthermore, The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) focuses primarily on promoting tourism
destinations rather than positioning Thailand as a premier venue for world-class performances,
unlike the Singapore Tourism Board (STB), which actively promotes such endeavors and integrates
tourism with investment.
Singapore's proactive approach to fostering a vibrant entertainment scene, coupled with substantial
government grants totaling SG$297 million (about 7.8 billion baht) in 2023 for tourism promotion,
contrasts starkly with Thailand's comparatively modest budget allocation of about 3.2 billion baht
to the TAT in the 2024 fiscal year.
Political stability also plays a pivotal role, with Thailand's history of unrest and the 2014 coup
d'état disrupting events like Swift's planned concert, subsequently shifted to Singapore. Instead of
relying on financial incentives, Thailand must address structural issues such as political stability,
transportation connectivity, and support for both international and local artists to elevate its
standing in the global entertainment landscape, thereby narrowing the gap with Singapore.

Thailand played against South Korea in a World

Cup qualifier match and lost 3-0 at Rajamangala
National Stadium in Bangkok on 26 March 2024.
South Korea controlled the game from the start,
scoring through Lee Jaesung In the first 19
minute. Despite efforts from the Thai team,
including a missed free kick, they couldn't get any
score. Son Heungmin and Park Jinseob from the
visitor team added more goals for South Korea at
the 54 minute of the game, followed by Park
Jinseob’s last goal in the 83 minute mark.

The Thai team, ranked 101st globally, hoped to replicate their recent performance in Seoul, when
they secured a 1-1 draw. However, South Korea was well prepared and show the significant gap in
FIFA ranking between the two teams. South Korea leads Group C, while China and Thailand are the
second, but Thailand has a better goal difference. The top two teams from each group will move on to
the next round of the qualifying tournament for the 2026 World Cup, which will have 48 teams.
