The graph illustrates the quantities of goods transported by four different modes of
transport in the UK between 1974 and 2002. The number of goods delivered by
road, water, rail, and pipeline varies greatly in the UK.
It can be seen clearly that the means of transport with the highest figure
is the road which was responsible for up to under 70 in 1974. Between 1978 and
1994 the amount of goods carried by this mode of transportation has decreased
and then started to increase quite steadily to 80 million tons. There was an
significant increase of nearly 20 million from 1998 to 2002. The quantity
delivered by water was stable in the first four years, then increased sharply to
around 60 million. Since 1994, this transport has decreased to 50 million and
eventually went up steadily. During the first four years, the rail did not change in
quantities of goods then this number fluctuated from 1978 to 1994 and finally
started to increase to more than 40 million tons in 2002. Freight by pipeline
increased steadily from 1974 and dropped slightly in 1994 after which the number
stabilized at around 20 million tons.

Increasing the price of petrol is the best way to solve the growing traffic and pollution
problems. To what extent do you agree or disagree with the statement?
What other measures do you think might be effective?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own
knowledge or experience.
You should write at least 250 words.

Some people say that increasing the price of petrol is the best way to solve the
growing traffic and pollution problems. Others claim that this is not always right. I
think that this is only partially true because there are many other better solutions to
this problem.
Increasing the prices of petrol can be considered a solution to traffic jams and
environmental pollution, but it is not the best way. People will use public transport
instead of their cars to save money on petrol so it will solve the growing traffic.
However, the increase in petrol prices will cause a financial burden for families.
This puts pressure on the breadwinners because they don't have enough money to
pay all the fees. Because people need to travel by transport is still very high, the
increase in petrol price does not bring much positive effect in solving problems.
I think the regulation of going to school and going to work one hour apart will
significantly reduce traffic jams at peak hours and should improve public transport
to be more modern for everyone's convenience. We should create ways to use solar
energy to avoid environmental pollution. Should create a variety of public
transport with low cost for people to save money and help improve pollution
problems
In conclusion, increasing petrol price is not the best solution so we need to use the
better measure to improve the problems
