Workshop 03
Design of a Bipolar Junction Transistor (BJT) Amplifier

Designed by: Samiru Gayan (samirug@uom.lk)

Welcome to Workshop 03 of EN1803. This workshop focuses on designing a simple BJT am-
plifier.

There are 20 marks available for the successful completion of all tasks in this
workshop. This workshop is worth 5% of your overall mark for the module.

General Instructions

For each workshop, you need to prepare a report with your responses to all the tasks and submit
it by the deadline indicated on Moodle page. You may hand-write or use MS Word or LATEX,
as per your convenience. To perform the simulation tasks, you need to install LTspice in your
PC by following the instructions below:

• Go to:
https://www.analog.com/en/design-center/design-tools-and-calculators/ltspice-simulator.html

• Download LTspice, choose an option depending on the operating system under the ’Download
LTspice’ section of the page.

• Run the executable file LTspiceXVII and follow the instructions to install.

1
Building a Simple BJT Amplifier

Figure 1: BJT as an amplifier.

TASK 1 Construct the circuit given in Fig. 1 in LTspice and provide a screenshot of your circuit
in your report.
Using the simulation, calculate quiescent Base and Collector currents by measuring volt-
ages across each resistor. Use Ohms law to calculate currents.

Voltage across 560 Ω resistor = .......... V

Collector current(Ic ) = .......... mA
Voltage across 470 kΩ resistor = .......... V
Base current(IB ) = .......... µA

What is the static current gain (hF E ) of this BJT?

There are 6/20 marks for the successful completion of this task.

We then connect an audio signal which is to be amplified, to the input of the amplifier circuits
as shown in Fig. 2.

Figure 2: Audio signal to the amplifier input.

In this experiment, we can assume that the audio signal generator produces a sinusoidal wave-
form with an amplitude of 20 mV peak-to-peak and a frequency of 1 kHz.

TASK 2 Modify the circuit given in Fig. 1 to produce the audio signal amplification and provide
a screenshot of your circuit in your report.
Plot the input and output voltage variation in the same diagram and briefly discuss their
phase relationship. What is the phase change introduced by the amplifier?
Calculate the voltage gain of the amplifier.

Peak-to-peak input voltage = .......... mV

Peak-to-peak output voltage = .......... mV
Voltage Gain (Av) = ..........

There are 8/20 marks for the successful completion of this task.

TASK 3 Increase the amplitude of the input signal until just before the peak of the output sine
wave begins to flatten out on the simulation.
Measure and record the positive and negative saturation output voltages. Provide a
screenshot of your simulation results.
Briefly discuss your observations.
There are 6/20 marks for the successful completion of this task.
