PLO 3 Design / Development of Solutions: An ability to design solutions for complex

engineering problems and design systems, components, or processes that meet specified needs
with appropriate consideration for public health and safety, cultural, societal, and environmental
considerations.

PLO 4 Investigation: An ability to investigate complex engineering problems in a methodical

way including literature survey, design and conduct of experiments, analysis and interpretation of
experimental data, and synthesis of information to derive valid conclusions.

PLO 5 Modern Tool Usage: An ability to create, select, and apply appropriate techniques,
resources, and modern engineering and IT tools, including prediction and modeling, to complex
engineering activities, with an understanding of the limitations.

CLO 3: The student will be able to design mechanical components using various design criteria.
CLO 4: The student will be able to apply contextual knowledge to assess the design safety for
assigned CEP/PBL.

CLO 5: Students will demonstrate the use of modern tools for the assigned CEP/PBL.

Submission Guidelines for Students

▪ Students should submit the assignment in groups. Each group should contain a
maximum of 3-5 students.
▪ The contribution of each student should be written on the second page. No report
will be accepted without the contribution page.
▪ The report should be in Microsoft Word or PDF. No hand-written assignments will
be credited.
▪ The whole report should be 2000 words plus any relevant material.
▪ Drawings can be done by hand or electronically. They can either be scanned/copied
into your Word or PDF document.
▪ The report should contain an Introduction, Calculations, Analysis, Results,
Discussion, Conclusion, and References.
▪ Similarity should not be above 20%. If found, the OEL report will be rejected and
marked zero.

Key Deliverables

▪ Title Page containing Name and Registration Number of all Group Members
▪ Contribution Page
▪ Comprehensive Report containing the required information (Introduction, Problem
Analysis, Calculations, Materials Selection, Results, Discussion, Conclusion, and
References).
▪ Selection of Bearing (diameter/width).
▪ Calculation of the Bearing dimensions of the waterwheel.
▪ Selection of Bearing material. Provide a valid reason.
▪ Calculation of forces and pressure on the bearing (by hand or electronically).
▪ Define the design parameters and state any required assumptions.
▪ Calculate the Bearing Characterization (ZN/P)

valid reason.
▪ Provide SolidWorks Files of Bearing Design and Assembly.
▪ Presentation in PPT format
▪ All the references cited by Mendeley.
Complex Engineering Problem Statement

A new company called Stream Power is developing the prototype of a portable electricity
generator to be placed on a stream or river that would charge a lithium polymer battery. The
design follows the same concept as the Hydrocat which consists of a waterwheel that is placed
ina floating structure, see Figure and links below.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nTSkJOJrp3c

The portable electric generator system should be easily transported and deployed.
There is a trade-off with the size of the bearing, the size should be big enough to last 5 years
and small enough to reduce the power losses.
CEP Objectives:

▪ To design and select materials for a reliable shaft bearing assembly that can be used for
the above mechanical structure and minimize friction, wear, and maintenance.

▪ Analysis of the designed Bearing for the lubrication and heat dissipation.

▪ 3D modeling of designed bearing and drafting.

CEP Brief:
As an engineer in the ‘Stream Power’, you have been asked to design the bearing for the
waterwheel.
Hint 1: The dimensions are not given, you decide, but provide the reason for the selection.
You can make it as small or big as you wish if it serves the intended purpose.
Hint 2: The weight of the waterwheel is not given and needs to be estimated or assumed by
you (rationally). The water also applies a horizontal force to the waterwheel.

Hint 3: Do not assume values by yourself. Go through the reference chapters given in
textbooks. There must be some standards to follow for the selection.
