1. At 20C, pure water required 102.2 sec to flow the capillary of an Ostwald viscometer while
toluene at 20C required 68.9 sec. Calculate the relative viscosity of toluene. Densities of water
and toluene are 0.998 and 0.866 g cm-1. [2.5]

2. In an experiment with Ostwald viscometer, pure water took 1.52 minutes to flow through the
capillary at 20◦C. For the same volume of another liquid of density 0.80 g cm -1 the flow time was
2.25 minutes. Find the relative viscosity of the liquid and its absolute viscosity in centipoise.
Density of water at 20◦C is 0.9982 and absolute viscosity of water is 1.005 centipoise. [2.5]

3. Calculate the volume occupied by 5 g of acetylene gas at 50◦C and 740 mm pressure. [2.5]

4. Calculate the pressure developed in a 5 litre vessel containing 88 g of CO2 at 27◦C. Assume CO2
as Vander waals gas (C =12, O = 6) ; a = 3.59atm lit2 mol-2 ; b = 0.043 lit mol-1 . [5]

5. Derive Vanderwaals equation. Prove that excluded volume is four times the actual volume. [10]

6. Calculate the entropy change in transforming 24 g of Ice into water at 0◦C.

Molar heat of fusion = 6009 J mol-1. [2.5]
