"What would you like us to do, Kova? Stop and see if she's okay
and let the bitch kill us too, or call the police, tip them off about
where we are, and get dragged to jail?" Nikita didn't bat an eye at
the fact that we saw a woman most likely killed in front of us.
I remembered what Avery had said about her and the guys
growing up on the street.
It went way beyond being a bitch, and I could see it now. Nikita
was traumatized.
Or maybe it was just a vampire thing. I didn't know.
I did know that we had to make it to the safe house and lose
whoever was wearing my face.
We needed to regroup and figure out what the hell was going on.
We turned another corner and almost flipped over before we
were brought to an intersection with a stoplight. Probably one of the
only ones in the small city, and the morning rush of traffic was still
happening.
The car sped behind us out onto the street.
"She's still following us!" Lennox yelled.
"Not for long." Lightning whispered in a way that made my skin
crawl.
I didn't know what it was that he would do until the light in front
of us turned yellow, and he refused to slow down.
In fact, I felt the van speed up.
The scenery flew by us even faster.
"Lightning, what are you going to do?" I asked.
Nikita turned to him and read his mind before a mortified look
crossed her eyes.
"Everyone, hold on."
Avery threw the buckle around her waist, and Lennox tightened
his.
On the other hand, I was kneeling on the floor of the van beside
Link, and I didn't have time to find a seat.
And even if I did, I wasn't about to leave him in the front seat
unprotected. I didn't go through all of that work just to get in a car
accident and have his wounds open back up.
So instead, I threw myself on top of him as gently as I could to
hold him down.
I knew the truth was, if we got into an actual accident, it
wouldn't do shit to protect him.
But it made me feel better, and that was all that counted.
Up ahead, the yellow light turned red, and Lightning punched the
pedal all the way to the floor.
The van struggled to accelerate when it was already going so
fast, and somehow the car had gained ground on us. Now it was
almost close enough for the bumper to touch the fender.
"Hang on, everyone!" Lightning screamed.
My heart jumped in my chest as we barreled forward, and he did
exactly what I thought he would, drove straight into traffic.
The intersection was busy, too, and we sped through.
A scream crawled out of Avery's throat when we almost t-boned
a small truck, but we ended up missing it by the skin of our teeth.
Instead, a car nicked our rear bumper with a loud and jarring
bang.
The world around us spun faster than I'd ever imagined, and my
heart raced in my chest.
I thought we were goners. I thought that was where the war
ended.
But then, as we were spinning, something else grabbed my
attention.
With my body pressed tightly against his, my ear was pressed up
against Link's chest, and his heartbeat rang loud in my ears.
It was like the rest of the world faded away, and his heartbeat
took center stage, grabbed all of my attention, and captivated every
part of my being.
The screaming fell by the wayside and the crashing sound of
grinding metal.
It was like time slowed, and suddenly, his heartbeat controlled it
all. It was the timestamp that held the world together and slowed it
to its pace.
The slow thump, thump, thump was music to my ears that I had
never heard before.
It felt like I was melting into him like butter, becoming one with
him.
I'm positive that was what kept me from sitting up out of fear
and probably being ejected from the car.
It was what helped me keep my composure.
It was what reminded me of what we were fighting for.
A world where an asshole vampire who'd never done a single
thing for anyone else in his life could be selfless enough to save me
was a world that I had to fight for.
A world that was worth staying alive in.
The van finished what seemed like its eternal spin abruptly, and I
was sure all of our stomachs churned with it too.
We were facing the opposite way that we had been, and we
made it out of the intersection and to the other side.
The van had halted just in time to see the small car almost reach
us before being sideswiped by an SUV and go flying down the street.
"Holy shit." Lightning mumbled.
The car landed upside down, and even from as far away as we
were, we could tell that it had crumpled like an old soda can. The
roof was completely smashed in.
There was no way who, or what, ever was inside had survived.
But even if they had, I didn't want to hang around to find out.
We needed to get to the safe house and fast.
"Go!" My voice pulled everyone out of their traumatized stares,
and Lightning threw the van in drive.
He pulled a U-turn and headed further down the road in the
direction that we had been heading.
We all rode in silence.
As we passed, a few people standing by snapped a picture of our
license plate.
I didn't blame them. If I had been a bystander, I would have
thought we were fleeing the scene, but we weren't, we were fleeing
for our lives, and that was much scarier than anything the
authorities could do.
But I winced at the thought of what it meant for Dean.
Arrested for murders that you didn't commit, and then a few
minutes later, the van full of kids that you were traveling with flees
the scene of another crime.
I hoped Dean was okay.
I didn't know if I would be after all of that.
But our main focus was getting to safety. That was what we
needed to do.
We sped down the street and hooked a left turn, which took us
to the outskirts of town. The wooded areas of the outlying mountain
surrounded us, and we drove for a few minutes, constantly glancing
back, paranoid that someone was following us.
But when we took a right turn that led us down a dirt path, I
knew that the chances of someone following us were slim.
Who the hell would be going out for a car ride down a fucking
dirt road in the morning?
I wasn't even sure if it was where we were supposed to be
going.
I was about to open my mouth to happily question Nikita's
navigation skills when a clearing came into view ahead of us.
Suddenly the dirt path turned into the pavement that seemed to
lead to nothing but an empty concrete slab. There wasn't a house or
anything else in sight.
"Are we sure this is the place?" I sank my teeth into my bottom
lip and caught myself praying for a miracle. I was sick of running. I
didn't want to anymore.
As a matter of fact, all I wanted to do was sleep.
And maybe cry, but that was in private.
"Of course, I'm sure." Nikita swung her head in my direction and
gave me a death stare that I was sure was filled with venom.
Oddly, it felt good. Everything that I'd ever known was flipped
upside down and inside out. The familiarity of the rivalry with Nikita
was comforting for once.
But I knew it would get old soon.
We drove straight, closing in on the concrete slab when we
passed through a strange shimmering barrier. I could feel the waves
of magic wash over me in a cool burst. It made my throat tingle and
my arms itch, just like the barrier around the school had.
That was when I finally began to believe Nikita.
Maybe she did know what she was talking about after all.
But when I glanced up through the windshield and saw the huge
house most definitely wasn't there a few seconds ago, it solidified it.
"Yes!" Lightning pumped his fist in the air.
There was relief in his voice.
"Wait, stop." Nikita held her hand out, and Lightning pumped the
brakes.
She turned to Avery and me.
"Do you think you guys could weaponize the cloaking spell? Right
now, all it does is mask the safehouse, but we need it to guard it
too."
I was surprised by Nikita's quick thinking.
I didn't want to admit it, but maybe she was more than just a
bitchy face.
Emphasis on the bitchy.
Avery nodded, a little too excitedly at Nikita asking for her help,
and I raised a brow in suspicion.
I let it go, though.
It really wasn't my business, I supposed.
But if Avery really did turn out to be my sister, I could have
thought of a million people who were better for her than the queen
of all bitches.
Avery climbed out of the car first, and then I followed.
My eyes landed on Link, still lying in the front seat.
"You guys go, bring him inside and get him settled while we do
this. We'll make our way up there when we know it's safe."
Lightning nodded, and the second I closed the door, the van
lurched forward toward the circular driveway that practically led to
the front door of the two-story house.
It reminded me of an old southern style house, with the boxy
design and large pillars outside, minus the years of minority
oppression haunting its halls.
I quickly followed Avery to the spot where the shimmering barrier
began.
There were so many things I wanted to say and so many
questions I wanted to ask, but the anxiety that began to bubble up
in my chest wouldn't let me until I knew that it was safe.
Avery grabbed my hand before she held hers up to the barrier.
She slowly started to chant the Latin words of another spell that
nipped at the edges of what felt like a memory inside of my head.
I felt her hand suck energy from mine.
She was siphoning it.
I could even physically see the pale blue magic beneath the skin
of my arms. It looked like it traveled through my veins, lighting up in
small streaks down my forearm before it traveled into my palm and
then to hers.
The barrier began to sputter and shake, stretching and distorting
the picture of the world beyond it like a crazy mirror at a circus.
Avery chanted louder, and I felt the air get denser like the magic
was being sucked out of it.
Then, all at once, the barrier turned a solid shade of blue and
held for a moment before it became invisible once again.
"There." Avery brushed her hands together like she had just
gotten done gardening instead of wielding mystical forces.
Her eyes met mine, and I could see the toll that all of it was
taking on her.
She was a sensitive soul, as sweet as sugar, and I was sure that
stuff like this was well out of her scope of living.
Hell, it was out of the she-devil's league, too, and that was
saying a lot.
I didn't blame her.
"What the hell is happening, Kova?" She asked as we made our
way up the driveway toward the house. "It's like the whole world is
going crazy."
"I don't know." I sighed. "But I'm going to find out."
A very and I walked the rest of the driveway in silence and took in
our surroundings.
After everything that had happened, would you blame us for
being extra vigilant?
"Where are we?" The wolf's voice echoed inside of me.
Well, look who decided to join the party after the shit show is
done.
I grumbled inside of my head.
"I don't know what happened. One second I was here, and the
next, it was like I was locked away in some small part of you.
Trapped by magic like a wild animal. I fought and fought to escape
it, but I couldn't until now."
I couldn't help but wonder if it had something to do with the
magical barrier we'd just put up. What if someone had some sort of
magic spell on me that was holding back my wolf?
I couldn't help but wonder if the barrier would block it out too.
We're at a safe house. Dean's gone. A woman is dead, and Link
is close to joining her.
"A lot has happened without me."
I disregarded the comment and went about my business
scanning the woods with my eyes, but there wasn't another house
anywhere near. There wasn't even another building near, not even a
garage.
Just a fancy house in the middle of nowhere.
It didn't look like an old house, either, It looked like it was kept
up and cleaned, at least from the outside.
Avery and I decided to loop around the back of the house to
make sure that it was really secure and nobody was hiding, ready to
snatch us as soon as we let our guard down.
I even strained to use my wolf senses, which was something new
to me, but there weren't any smells or sounds that I didn't
recognize, so we made our way back to the front and into the
gorgeous glass doors of the house.
Everything about the house felt fancy, all the way down to the
golden door handles.
It wasn't something that Dean had just lying around or built for
fun. It had to have cost a pretty penny.
I made sure to close the doors behind me and deadbolt them the
second we stepped inside, right before I noticed the beautiful marble
staircase and large entryway that almost took my breath away.
It was a bad time to be impressed by architecture and decor, but
it was literally a mansion, one that competed with Silvermoon, that
was shocking.
We got in just in time to catch Nikita and Lightning making their
way back down the stairs, wiping the sweat from their foreheads.
"Link is in a bedroom sleeping. This place has enough of them to
choke a fucking horse." Nikita said as she pulled her hair up into a
ponytail on her head.
I'd never seen her wear it like that, and I was caught off guard at
how much it suited her.
"Where's Nox?" I cocked my head to the side.
A look of dread swept across Nikita's face, and her eyes widened.
"He said he was going out to help you two."
Fuck.
The last thing we needed was for him to wander off alone,
especially not after what he had done the last time he was alone.
Nox was a different breed. He wasn't harsh like Link, and he
wasn't edgy like Lightning.
He was his own person, a softer one, and after everything we'd
seen happen, I wouldn't have been surprised if the first thing he did
was go out and rip out a few people's throats.
I wasn't even a vampire, and it sounded like a better idea than
cowering in hiding to me.
"Maybe he's still in the house." I tried to hide the panic in my
voice, but it slipped through anyway.
I jogged through the entryway and into the sitting room that
branched off of it.
There were a lot of books and a cozy looking fireplace, but no
Nox.
I sprinted to the next room down the hallway, and the others
followed me.
The dining room was empty, and so was the large open plan
kitchen.
I tried to ignore the expensive appliances and rushed to the next
room, which looked like a study, and sighed a breath of relief.
"I found him." I called to the others who weren't very far behind
me.
There Nox sat in a large armchair with a bottle of alcohol in one
hand and a glass full in the other.
The bottle was half empty, but I had a pretty strong feeling that
it was full when he found it, by the way, his eyes slowly crawled up
to mine.
"Oh, hey, Kova. Fancy seeing you here." His words slurred
together.
I rolled my eyes.
"It's nice to see you too, you alcoholic jerk." I smirked before
helping him to his feet.
"Jerk? How am I the jerk? You're the one who almost killed us."
He dropped the glass in his hand, and it shattered.
The noise made me flinch, and the others rushed to my side
before looking relieved that glass was all it was.
"You know that wasn't me." I helped him hobble back through
the kitchen and out into the sitting area.
The second that he sat down, he chugged the other half of the
bottle without a glass.
If he weren't a vampire with a crazy high tolerance, he would
have gotten alcohol poisoning for sure.
I didn't think it was the healthiest way to deal with what was
going on, but I was half tempted myself, so I let it be.
He smiled and closed his eyes before laying his head down on
the pillow.
I turned to see Nikita leaning against the doorway with her arms
crossed. For once, she had a smile on her face that didn't make her
look like a sarcastic bitch.
"Alcohol has always helped him curb his bloodlust." Nikita sighed.
"Not everyone understands that."
I nodded.
I would have gladly gotten plastered after everything we'd gone
through, but at least one of us had to be sober to figure out what
the hell was going on. And despite Nikita's strange kind streak, I still
didn't trust her to do the right thing if it killed her.
Avery and Lightning made their way back down the stairs into
the main corridor where we stood.
"Did you guys find him?" Avery asked with fear in her eyes.
"Yeah. He sniffed out the liquor cabinet like he was the wolf." I
gestured to the sitting room where he lounged on the couch.
I knew his brain must have been hell. He was fighting his
demons the only way he knew how.
That broke my heart even more.
I gestured to the others to follow me to the kitchen, far enough
that drunk vampire ears couldn't hear us.
"One injured and one incompacitated. That leaves the four of
us." Avery murmured.
She was right. We were four misfits who barely liked each other,
and now it felt like the weight of the world rested on our shoulders.
Nikita immediately made herself at home, heading straight to the
fridge.
"This is a safe house, not an all you can eat restaurant. What do
you expect that thing to be-" I started to throw shade but my jaw
hung open when she threw the door back and revealed a fully
stocked fridge. "Stocked?" I finished.
Nikita just smirked, grabbed a carton of orange juice, and
checked the expiration date.
"It's still good too." She flashed an evil smirk in my direction
before grabbing a glass and pouring herself some.
I raised a brow.
"If this is fully stocked-" I got up from my seat at the kitchen
island and threw open the nearest drawer to rummage.
"What are you doing?" Avery cocked her head to the side.
"Trying to figure out whose house this is." I said, a twinge of
disappointment on my tongue that all I'd found was a drawer full of
forks and spoons.
"Why does it matter if we're safe?" Nikita tried to discredit my
train of thought but I ignored her.
"Because how else are we supposed to know if someone else is
going to roll down the driveway and wonder why it looks like their
house disappeared into thin air!" I rolled my eyes and took a deep
breath.
The universe really didn't have to give me so many obstacles to
work with here. I grumbled inside my head. Amnesia, and a stupid
bitch to work with.
"Perhaps if you stopped complaining and started actually using
your brain you wouldn't be in this position." My wolf replied. Her
voice was much quieter than usual, though. Weak.
I couldn't tell if it was because I'd shifted the night before, or
because of whatever magical cocktail possessed that cellphone.
Either way the faster she got stronger the better.
The last thing I needed was another obstacle.
I moved to another drawer and slid it open.
"Bingo." I smiled at the casually thrown stack of utility bills
inside.
I slid one out of the already opened envelope and looked at the
name on the address.
"Wait a minute. This can't be right." I blinked a few times to
make sure that my eyes weren't playing tricks on me.
"What?" Avery persisted.
So I slid the bill across the smooth marble countertop and her
jaw dropped.
"Dean and Alex? I thought they only dated a few times."
I huffed. "Well, according to the electric company they're
married."
I didn't know why the revelation felt so betraying. After the shit
show that had just happened, finding out that the one teacher that I
trusted wasn't being completely honest with me kind of stung.
Sure it was small, but in the moment it felt like more.
And it only added to the puzzle.
But lucky for us it didn't complicate the situation much more.
That is, until the house started to rumble.
"What the hell?" I looked up at the ceiling, the dainty crystal
chandelier that hung in the kitchen wobbled.
Avery's eyes met mine, and they were filled with an anxious fear.
"Someone's trying to get inside."
Great.
We appointed Lightning the babysitter of Link and Nox, and the
rest of us rushed outside.
It took until we made it past the front door for me to realize that
Avery had a large kitchen knife clutched in her fist tightly.
"What are you doing?" I tried as hard as I could not to laugh, but
it forced its way out of my mouth.
How could I not when she was bopping around with streaks of
blood in her hair and a knife in her hand like some kind of murder
barbie?
"I have to protect myself!"
"You know you're a witch right?"
"Can you both shut up and focus on the problem at hand?" Nikita
butted in, surprisingly assuming the role of the level headed one.
I wanted to cuss her out, maybe even get into an argument with
her just to make things feel normal again, but I shook the thought
from my mind.
She was right.
We carefully poked our heads around one of the large bushes
that stood beside the front door. From there we could only get a
small glimpse of the part of the driveway where the barrier began,
but there was very clearly a car stopped just outside it.
It was now or never.
"We have to go." I pulled Avery from the solace of the bush and
she dropped the kitchen knife in the dirt before clamping her hand
around Nikita's wrist.
There was no way she was going to let her miss out on all the
fun.
The closer we got to the car the easier it became to see that the
car was a familiar one. I'd remembered seeing it parked outside of
the school a lot.
"Alex?" The word fell from my lips.
There, standing beside it was the vampire teacher.
But was it the real her?
A very, Nikita, and I stood extremely still behind the barrier. The
look of shock had spread from my face to theirs.
Alex stared, confused, but it wasn't like she was looking at us.
She was looking through us, somewhere off in the distance.
Probably at the empty lot.
She took a step forward, and immediately, there was a bright
flash of pink light that blasted her back, and the barrier rippled.
We watched her get thrown like a rag doll a few feet in the air,
but she moved quickly and landed on her feet like a weird vampire
cat.
"How do we know if it's her?" Avery asked, her voice just a
whisper.
"We don't." Nikita crossed her arms. "So we don't let her in, end
of story."
Alex cocked her head to the side and wiped a bead of sweat from
her forehead.
It hurt to see her so frustrated. She was one of the few people at
the school that I actually trusted-even if she and Dean weren't
truthful about their relationship.
She was one of those people that you met a few times, but it felt
like you'd known them forever.
Her hand slid into the pocket of her jacket, and my heart
thudded loudly in my chest. It felt like every inch of my skin tingled
in anticipation, and we watched nervously.
Every cell told me to run. It would have been smart. For all we
knew, she was a clone and had some freak device that could take
down the barrier.
But we were all so in shock that instead, we watched.
She pulled out a cellphone, and I breathed a sigh of relief that it
wasn't a magical machine gun or something.
Something in my pocket vibrated- Dean's phone.
The generic ringtone went off so loud that I almost pissed my
pants. That mixed with the thick layer of anticipation wasn't the best
combination.
I pulled it from my pocket, glad that I'd decided to grab it on our
way out.
Alex's photo popped up.
"Look guys." I flashed it to them as proof that it was her, but the
scowl that was plastered to Nikita's face and the frown lines etched
into her pretty little forehead made it evident that she wasn't
convinced.
"We have no idea what we're up against here." She said with her
arms crossed. "We know these freaks can wear people's faces. Is it
really that much of a leap to think that they can steal phones?"
I groaned.
But not because I disagreed, more because I hated that I didn’t.
I had made it this far with the notion that the only thing that
Nikita's brain contained was how to do makeup and how to make
people cry.
The notion that she actually was capable of more than those two
things threatened to break me, even worse- make me like her.
So I brushed it off and nodded.
"Hello?" I put it up to my ear.
"Kova? Thank god you're okay! What the hell happened to my
house?" A look of worry spread across Alex's face that was so
authentic that it made me worried for me too.
Could she really fake that?
The truth was, we didn't know. That was the scary part.
"How do I know this is you? The real you?" My voice quaked with
the question.
You could see the confusion settle into her eyes when she heard
the question, and she looked over her shoulder nervously.
"What? What the hell does that mean?" There was an unsettling
tone in her voice.
Avery still looked afraid, and Nikita shook her head
disapprovingly, but I didn't care. My gut told me that she couldn't
fake that. The genuine fear at what I'd said told me that she didn't
even know about the clones before any of it.
"Take it down." I turned to Avery, and her eyes widened.
"What?"
"Take it down. It's obviously the real Alex, so take it down." I
said.
Avery nervously tugged at the back of her arm. The second
Nikita opened her mouth, I knew that she had done it again, lost all
the ground she had in making me sort of not hate her guts.
She had talent, that was for sure.
She could remind me of all the reasons I wouldn't have cared if
she died simply by breathing because I knew whatever came after
that was about to be utter bullshit.
"Don't move a muscle, Avery. Know-nothing Kova is about to get
us killed and trust me, you don't want to be an accessory to that."
My blood boiled at the shrill sound of her bossy voice. Why did
she do that? Act like a decent person one day and then remember
that she was supposed to make everyone hate her the next?
My fists clenched at my side, and my eyes locked onto Avery,
who was very actively trying to ignore my gaze.
Even without my memories, I could see how much of an
influence Nikita had on her. She was torn between the two of us,
and I didn't like the proportions.
"Don't, Avery. It's not like she can do it herself. She doesn't know
shit about magic."
Inside me, the angry wolf began to stir.
"What did she just say to us?" The normally smooth and elegant
voice now had jagged edges like a knife that scratched around inside
my skull.
"Fine. You're right. I'll just do it myself." My voice was a low
growl now.
The phone wasn't pressed against my ear anymore, but I could
hear Alex's voice coming from the earpiece.
"What's going on, Kova?" Her voice was nearly a whisper.
I reached out to the shimmering barrier and lined my hand up
with it.
I had no idea what I was doing, exactly, but the wolf inside of
me did. I could feel her taking over, like the instinct that was
intertwined with me.
I didn't understand it, but I felt it, and that was all that mattered.

peau de daim, et en sifflant son air favori. Bruno resta immobile, le
regardant s’en aller, et ce ne fut que lorsqu’il l’eut perdu de vue qu’il

trois cents onces du prince de Butera.
