WORKSHEET
L-9 GRAVITATION

1. Explain why we do not find any two objects moving towards

each other in a room due to the force of gravity.
2. Explain your answer with a reason:
In which case will the force of attraction be larger?
i) Force of attraction of the earth on a body of mass 1 kg.
ii) Force of attraction of a body of mass 1 kg on the earth.
3. A planet P has a mass m at a distance r from the sun while
another planet Q has a mass m/2 at a distance 3r from the sun.
Determine the ratio of the gravitational pull due to the sun on
P to that on Q.
3. Why is the pressure on the ground more when a man is
walking than when he is standing?
4. Find the pressure exerted at the tip of a drawing pin when it is
pushed against a board with a force of 20 N. Assume the area
of the tip to be 0.1 mm2 .
5. A pressure of 10 Pa acts on an area of 3m². What is the force
acting on the area? If the area is made one-third, what force
will be exerted by the application of the same pressure ?

6. Why is a bucket full of water lighter when it is in water than

when it is taken out?
7. What is the difference between the pressure exerted by solids
and fluids?
8. If a fresh egg is put into a beaker filled with water, it sinks.
On dissolving a lot of salt in the water, the egg begins to rise
and float. Why?
9. The density of gold is 19300 kg/m3. What will the mass of a
gold brick with dimensions 5 cm x 10 cm x 20 cm be?

10. An object weighs 10 N in air. When immersed fully in water,

it weighs only 8 N.
i) Find the buoyant force.
ii) What is the weight of the liquid displaced by the object?
iii) What is the mass of the displaced liquid?

11. Why is it easier to swim in sea water than in freshwater?

12. A balloon filled with hydrogen rises to the ceiling, but if
it is filled with carbon dioxide it sinks to the floor. Give a
reason.
13. Draw a diagram to show the forces acting on a body floating
on water with some part submerged. Name the forces.
14. A block of metal has a length of 20 cm, breadth 10 cm and
height 5cm. If its mass is 7.8 g, find the density of the metal
in SI unit.
15. A piece of copper of mass 28 g when immersed completely
in water contained in a measuring cylinder, raises the level
of water from 25 mL to 35 mL.
Find: i. the volume of the copper piece
ii. the density of copper
iii. weight of the water displaced by it
iv. upthrust
