What's a syllable?
Ia a unit of speech made up of one sound (a vowel) which may be followed and/or
preceded by other sound (consonant).
What's de compulsory element of the syllable?
The only part of a syllable that always has to be there is the nucleus. Some
syllables have an onset but no coda, like the word day, and some syllables have a
coda but not onset.
What's the syllable structure?
Syllables are units within words, and they also have an inner structure of their own.
Every syllable has a nucleus, which is the most sonorous part of the syllable: a
vowel or another sonorous sound. If there are consonants, which are less
sonorous, they make up the onset and coda of the syllable.
What are three examples of syllable structure?
affixation. the result of adding an affix to a root word.
What's a syllabic consonant?
a consonant that forms a syllable on its own.
What's the sonority hiearchy theority?
Defines the syllable as a sonority peak and thus accounts for syllabic consonants
Describe the following consonats:
1- laterales: lateral, in phonetics, a consonant sound produced by raising the tip of
the tongue against the roof of the mouth so that the airstream flows past one or
both sides of the tongue
2- nasals: a consonant whose production involves a lowered velum and a closure
in the oral cavity, so that air flows out through the nose.
approximants: a sound that is produced by bringing one articulator in the vocal
tract close to another without, however, causing audible friction
4- fricatives: the kinds of sounds usually associated with letters such as f, s; v, z, in
which the air passes through a narrow constriction that causes the air to flow
turbulently and thus create a noisy sound.
5- affricatives: consonant sounds made up of a stop, like /t/, immediately followed
by a fricative, like /s/.
6- plosives: a pulmonic consonant in which the vocal tract is blocked so that all
airflow ceases.
