Materials Needed:

● Worsted weight yarn in gold, black, burgundy, dark grey

● 5.00 mm hook (6.00mm if you want a slouchy beanie)
● Tapestry needle
● Scissors
● Tape Measurer

Abbreviations
Ch- Chain
Sl St- Slip Stitch
Sc- Single Crochet
Sctog- Single Crochet two stitches together
Hdc- Half double crochet
Dc- Double Crochet
Dctog- Double Crochet Together
Blo- Back loops only
Camel Stitch- Crocheting in the third loop of a hdc (push the normal 2 hoops forward and
on the “back” of the stitch you will find the third loop)

Things you need to know:

● Color Changing- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3wAmFSsJOJQ

● Camel Stitch- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=crNuYHPoirY
● This hat can easily be made into a slouchy beanie, use a 6.00mm hook instead of a
5.00mm hook for a looser fit beanie.
● Make sure to keep the tension tight during the lettering, the tighter the tension the neater
the letters, which will also help the hat from “mushrooming”

Gauge:

For the Brim:

Row 1: Ch11, start in 2nd loop from hook 10 sc
Row 2-12 Ch1, 10sc
The Square will be 3”x3”

Pattern

For the rim use Black Yarn:

For a Slouchy beanie:

Row 1: Ch11, in the 2nd loop from hook sc, 9sc (10)
Row 2: Ch1, sc in blo (10)

Repeat row 2 until approximately 16 inches long

For a fitted beanie:

Row 1: Ch6, in the 2nd loop from hook sc, 4sc (5)
Row 2: Ch1, 5sc in blo (10)

Repeat row 2 until approximately 16 inches long

Slip stitch the two sides together, turn inside out to hide the seam. Now we will start the hat.
Continuing with black, sc along the edge of the rim randomly but space the stitches out as much
as possible:

Round 1: Ch1, 70sc around hat, sl st in beginning chain.

Round 2: (Change to grey color) Ch1, 70sc around, sl st

Round 3: (Change to yellow color) Ch1, 70 hdc around, sl st

Round 4: (Change to grey) Ch1, 70 sc camel stitch, sl st

Round 5: (Change to burgundy) Ch1, 70 hdc around, sl st

Round 6: (Change to grey) Ch1, 70 sc camel stitch, sl st

Round 7: (change to black) Ch1, 70 hdc, sl st

Round 8: (change to burgundy-this is where you will start the lettering) Ch1, 70 sc camel stitch,
sl st

With both yellow and burgundy-carry both through while doing your color changes. For an
image reference I have attached a separate pdf with the printout of the words. Keep in mind you
will be working the letters backwards. If you are left handed work each step for the letters
backwards (Example Round 9 normally starts with 1R, 2Y if you’re left handed you’ll start
it 1R, 6Y) For yellow stitches I’m going to abbreviate to Y for the Burgundy stitches I’m going to
abbreviate to R). Make sure to keep your tension tight for the letters. Every stitch will be worked
with single crochet.

Fasten off.

Tag me with your finished work @hooksandcocoa, thanks!

Variations:

If you are wanting the letters lower rather than at the top of the hat, switch the order of the rows.
Meaning: start at row 8 (placing the 70sc around the brim randomly, as evenly spaced as
possible). Work the lettering and after row 18 work the beginning rounds then continue to the
decreasing rows.

If you're worried about size still omit the camel stitches from the beginning and just work the hds
rows in the 3rd loop.
