Question 1. )

Points for Summary Alternative Sentencing

1) Prisons are dangerously overcrowded.

2) The costs of maintaining prisons and prisoners are an unfair

strain for the taxpayers (costly).

3) There are insufficient resources to effectively prepare offenders

for re-entry into productive society.

4) Negative reinforcement and lack of emotional support may result

in prisoners becoming depressed/bitter/hostile (lack the
motivation to become useful citizens). N.B. There must be a
combination of at least two reasons to get the mark.

5) Instead of being rehabilitated, prisoners become repeat

offenders.

6) Prisons are now producing more repeat offenders than reformed

citizens.

7) Harsher punishments are given to the ordinary/poorer/non-violent

offenders than to the wealthy/influential (who face little
deprivation while in jail).

8) Judges may devise sentences that punish the offender (non-

violent) but are also beneficial to victims/community/society.

9) To reduce the number of inmates, the violent offenders should

remain in jail while judges may give sentences that do not
require non-violent offenders to be in prison/jail.

Question 1. )

Sample Summary 1
Prisons are dangerously overcrowded causing several problems.
These include the costs of maintaining prisons and prisoners - an
unfair strain for the taxpayers. Imprisonment over-punishes
underprivileged offenders while influential ones experience little
restriction. Furthermore, rehabilitation programs are ineffective,
producing many repeat offenders. Negative reinforcements and the
lack of emotional support may result in prisoners becoming
depressed and bitter and sometimes unmotivated to re-join society.
The suggested solution is to imprison those guilty of violent
crimes, while imposing alternative punishments on the non-violent.
This form of lesser punishment can be beneficial to the offenders
themselves, and to the community. Judges can devise imaginative
and less costly means of punishment which would reduce the prison
population.
(114 words)

The maintaining of the imprisoned is an expensive task which

becomes a burden shouldered by taxpayers. Additionally,
imprisonment is not effective in its goals of reformation and
rehabilitation as most released prisoners go on to become repeat
offenders. This is a consequence of the social deprivations and
denial of basic comforts that remind prisoners of their crimes.
Resultantly, they develop negative attitudes that hinder them
from becoming contributing members of society. One solution to
this problem is the reduction of prison populations by
implementing different methods of punishing non-violent offenders
as opposed to jail time. Judges are the one to be tasked with

they simultaneously punish the offender and benefit the

community.
