TUTORIAL PROBLEM

T1. Determine the displacements of nodes of the spring system shown using Rayleigh Ritz method.
Use the one-dimensional structural analysis approach of Rayleigh-Ritz to find the global nodal
displacements at all nodes.

Solution:

Total potential energy ()= Total elastic strain energy – total work potential
= (1/2)*[k1*1^2+ k2*2^2+ k3*3^2+ k4*4^2+ k5*5^2]-F1*Q1-F2*Q2-F3*Q3-F4*Q4-F5*Q5-
F6*Q6
= (1/2)*[k1*(Q2-Q1)^2+ k2*(Q2-Q4)^2+ k3*(Q2-Q5)^2+ k4*(Q3-Q2)^2+ k5*(Q6-Q3)^2]-F1*Q1-
F2*Q2-F3*Q3-F4*Q4-F5*Q5-F6*Q6
Substituting the essential and natural boundary conditions:
EBCs: Q4=0; Q5=0
NBCs: F1=250 N; F2=45 N; F3=200 N; F4=R4; F5=R5; F6=0.
Substituting:
= (1/2)*[50*(Q2-Q1)^2+ 30*Q2^2+ 25*Q2^2+ 20*(Q3-Q2)^2+ 40*(Q6-Q3)^2]-250*Q1-45*Q2-
200*Q3
Minimising the  with respect to the unknown displacements:
/Q1=0
-50*(Q2-Q1) -250=0
/Q2=0
50*(Q2-Q1) + 30*Q2+ 25*Q2- 20*(Q3-Q2) -45 =0
/Q3=0
20*(Q3-Q2) - 40*(Q6-Q3) -200
/Q6=0
40*(Q6-Q3)=0
Arranging the equations into matrix form:

ASSIGNMENT PROBLEM
(A) Determine the displacements of nodes of the non-uniform cross-section bar shown using Rayleigh
Ritz method by assuming it as a 1-dimensional structure. The force “F” at node 4 is equal to sum of the
last four digits in your ID No in kN, subject to a minimum 6 kN. You must use the element numbering
and node numbering as suggested in the Figure. Treat each material portion as a constant stiffness
spring.
