Learning from others

We will learn about the structure of university webpages and the type of information
you can find there. We will also learn how to get information about undergraduate
programmes offered around the world related to your interests and compare them
with UNPAZ undergraduate programmes.

University webpages
If you compare university webpages, you will find some similarities and differences,
but all of them will include undergraduate and postgraduate programs, research
programs, an ‘About us’ tab with information about the university and its staff, a
tab with information for current students and newcomers, News and some
universities will also include an ‘international students’ section or tab. Learning
about university webpages as a genre, will help you find the information you want
easily and it will also give you ideas about what is missing but important to be

Look at the pictures and structure of the webpage, pay attention to its source, titles
and subtitles, and the main sections of the webpage to answer the following
questions:
a) What is the name of the
university? ..........................................................................................................
..............
b) Where is it located? Check its source.

B.S. in Media & Entertainment

The Media and Entertainment degree invites students to

explore the critical ways in which communication and
converged media connect with and affect our lives, society,
and culture. The program focuses on the forms and effects
of media, including radio, film, television, print, and
electronic media, and requires that students demonstrate
basic digital media production skills. Our students are
critically engaged with creative analysis, production, and
research into traditional and emerging forms of media. The
curriculum emphasizes media history, media institutions,
theory and research, production, ethics, policy, management,
and technology and their effects on contemporary life.

The program offers both theoretical and applied approaches to the study and
production of media. “Entertainment” is defined as “any media or communication
function that is used for entertainment purposes” when considering areas of
study. Thus, the field of media and entertainment is very broad and includes
everything from film, television, and radio pre-production, production, and post-
production; to corporate, government, and non-profit communications and digital
media production; to jobs in theater, music, museums, theme parks, sports, travel
and tourism, and gaming. The program also features moMENTum productions, a
collective of faculty & students who volunteer to help our campus and community
partners with media production projects.

Students who graduate with the BS with a major in Media and Entertainment will
be ready for careers as media professionals within communication-based
industries (i.e., media writing, media production, media editing, media sales, media
buyer, media research, public affairs, publishing, public information officer,
community outreach, political advocacy, and ministry), government, education,
law and policy, management, and/or non-profit organizations. This program also
lays the groundwork for further graduate study of mass communication, thus
opening the door for employment as instructors in higher education.

Admission Requirements

Admission to the Media and Entertainment program is separate from admission to

Kennesaw State University. Students must meet the admission requirements to
pursue this degree program, outlined below.

All communication and media majors must earn a grade of ‘C’ or better in all
communication and media courses counted toward their degree and pass the
Communication Entrance Exam with a score of 78% or higher. Students who fail
to pass the grammar test in three attempts must pursue majors in other
departments.

Graduation Requirements

Each student is expected to meet the Academic Policies Graduation Policies and
Procedures outlined in the Academic Policies section of the Catalog.

GETTING THE MAIN IDEA

PALABRAS TRANSPARENTES, PRÉSTAMOS LINGÜÍSTICOS, PALABRAS
CONOCIDAS Y PALABRAS REPETIDAS

a) Read the first paragraph and underline the types of words explained in the
previous box. These words will give you an idea of the content included there.
Now, explain what the first paragraph is about (you can use Spanish):
…………………………………………………………………………………………
…………………………………………………………………………………………
…………………………………………………………………………………………
………………………………………………………………………………………….
b) Now, summarize your previous answer with a phrase or some words to
explain its content.

READING FOR SPECIFIC INFORMATION

a) Read the first paragraph again and answer these questions:

What is the focus of this
program? .......................................................................................................................
.......................................................................................................................................
................
What kind of activities do students do?
.......................................................................................................................................

c) Read the rest of the article and write True or False:
● Graduates can work in government or non-profit organizations too. __
● Students can ask for information by sending a whatsapp message. __
● Students are not required to pass a grammar test to be admitted into this
program. __
● 78% refers to the minimum score of the Communication Entrance Exam that
students need to be admitted. __

FOCUS ON LANGUAGE
NOUN PHRASES
A NOUN PHRASE is a group of words in a sentence that together behave as a noun. For
example: “School of Information and Media”. Notice that titles and subtitles in this text are
noun phrases.
premodificadores y postmodificadores. Veamos unos ejemplos:

1) Media and Entertainment program: Programa de Entretenimiento y Medios

2) Program description: Descripción del Programa
3) Basic program of study: Programa básico de estudio

basic program of study

premodificador. ‘DE’ me no como sustantivo núcleo

DEFINITIONS

A formal definition consists of three parts:

1. The term (word or phrase) to be defined
2. The class of object or concept to which the term belongs
3. The differentiating characteristics that distinguish it from all others of its
class

“Entertainment” is defined as “any media or communication function that is used for

entertainment purposes” when considering areas of study.

participios o -ing verbs.

QUICK CHECK: Find another definition in the text, identify its parts and explain it with your
own words.

WORKING WITH NEW VOCABULARY

Language Learning strategies: Creating mental linkages (grouping)

tropical, etc), antónimos (friendly/unfriendly, etc.), etc…

a) Go back to the text and choose at least 20 new words related to university webpage
sections or extracted from the text you have just read.
b) Choose two or three different ways of grouping the new words, label the categories
and study them.

began the program declared as a CGDD major.

CLICK TO SEE LATEST PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS

Degree requirements generally do not change once a student is declared a CGDD

major until graduation, except if the student does not attend KSU for 3
consecutive semesters (including summer) or if the student requests a change of
catalog year to a newer set of requirements. Students may update to any newer
set of academic requirements if they wish.

● The Academic Catalog contains the academic requirements and policies to

obtain a degree of a Bachelor of Science in Computer Game Design and
Development, and all other advising material (curriculum sheets,
DegreeWorks) are based on this.
● Curriculum sheets can be found on the CCSE Academic Advising Office
website. Curriculum sheets are helpful guides to be used along with
meeting an academic advisor and DegreeWorks, and are subject to change.
Always double check with an academic advisor.
● Prerequisites used in registration for courses follow the latest approved
prerequisites. Therefore, what may be listed as the prerequisite on a 2015
academic year curriculum sheet may not be the prerequisite required in
registering for the Fall 2018 semester. Prerequisites should be updated in
the catalog upon approval. Again, always check with an academic advisor.

Common words and

phrases [section 1]
If you’re a fan of gaming and like to keep up
with industry news, you’re probably fairly
familiar with some of the terminology you’ll find
here. But if you’re new to game development
or need a refresher, this list of words and terms
should come in handy when you’re participating in online discussions, diving into learning
resources, and using Unity. Unity is the world’s best real-time development platform – it’s
also a robust ecosystem designed to enable your success.

General game development terms [section 2]

AAA (Triple-A): Games that are created and released typically by mid-size or major
publishers; usually anything that cannot be classified as “indie.”
Agent: An in-game character or object that uses AI to interact with other objects in its
environment.
AI: Artificial intelligence; an in-game entity whose functionality is dependent on computer
code rather than human input. NPCs are common AI entities.
Common Unity terms [section 3]
Asset Store: A Unity website that lets you download premade assets for use in your game
development projects. Unity developers can also publish their own premade assets to the
Asset Store for other developers to download and use.
C Sharp (C#): The coding language used to create scripts within Unity. C Sharp is
primarily responsible for the functionality of a game, going beyond the limitations of
general game development tools to help developers tailor and perfect gameplay.
Component: Something that is attached to a GameObject to alter its functionality.
Game genres and in-game terms [section 4]
Action-adventure: A game where players overcome a series of small and large obstacles
while progressing through multiple levels or scenarios.
Augmented reality (AR): An experience that combines gameplay with augmented reality
features overlaid on a physical location. Examples of mobile AR games include Pokémon
Go and Jurassic World Alive.
Battle royale: An online game in which the game map serves as an arena for many

combatants to find and fight one another, with a typical goal of being the last player
standing.
Bullet hell: Games that rely on shooting weapons and dodging return fire as their primary
mechanics, often on an exaggerated and grandiose level.
Casual: Games that offer quick entry into gameplay through minimal mechanics.
Cooperative: A game or style of gameplay that rewards collaboration rather than pitting
players against each other.
Couch co-op: A cooperative multiplayer game that can only be played by having two or
more players in the same physical location.
Downloadable content (DLC): Additions or expansions to a game that can be
downloaded and added through a typically simple in-app installation process.
Educational: A game whose purpose is to educate players in a particular skill or subject
matter.
Esports: Professional competitive gaming events.
Fantasy: See role-playing game (RPG).
Fighting: A game whose primary mechanic is hand-to-hand combat in a player(s) versus
player(s) (PvP) setting.
First-person shooter (FPS): A game from the shooter’s perspective, as they point the
gun at different targets.
Free-to-play (F2P): A game that is free to download and play, though the studio/publisher
may monetize it through microtransactions (such as IAPs), rewarded videos, ads, or other
means.
Horror: A game whose design and mechanics are built around inducing fear and dread in
players.
Hyper-casual: A game that usually offers a single, easy-to-understand mechanic that
leads to instant gameplay gratification.

Remember that a formal definition consists of three parts:
The term (word or phrase) to be defined
The class of object or concept to which the term belongs
The differentiating characteristics that distinguish it from all others of its class

● Let’s focus on the term, (the verb) and the class: Analyze these definitions taken from

Esports: Professional competitive gaming events.

En estos ejemplos vemos el uso del verbo BE (is/are) luego del concepto a definir:
Concepto+verbo be + category.

● Let’s focus now on the characteristics of an object and the verbs:

Casual games: Games that offer quick entry into gameplay through minimal mechanics.
Bullet hell games: Games that rely on shooting weapons and dodging return fire as their
primary mechanics.

oraciones independientes, usaría THEY como sujeto: Casual games are games. They offer
quick entry…

hace referencia dicho verbo.

Video games help students to develop their attention skills. (sujeto plural)
An agent interacts with other objects. (Sujeto singular)

‘who’, ‘which’, etc… y hacen referencia al objeto/concepto anteriormente
mencionado:

Bullet hell: Games that rely on shooting weapons… (sujeto plural)

Cooperative: A game or style of gameplay that rewards collaboration (sujeto singular)
