Dear colleagues,

Welcome back! In this issue you will find lots of ideas, photocopiable activities and ready-
to-use material related to the topic Icebreakers and warm-ups. An icebreaker is an activity or game
designed to welcome students and warm up the conversation among them in the classroom. The
main purpose is for students to comfortably interact and to get to know one another. We have
prepared a whole edition with lots of ideas you can use during the first classes of the year…
We know that the first month is tough and there are many things to revise and plan as well
as establish a connection with the groups you will be working with
throughout the whole year. Having fun, exploring our creativity
and learning with others are just a few components of the
ideas we present in this issue.
We hope you find it useful and include these ideas in
your classes!!!

14. PERSONAL COLLAGE
Prepare your own personal collage, show it to your students and explain that the
words, phrases and photographs in it relate to you personally.
Encourage your students to discover information by asking you yes-no questions.
Explain that they are going to make similar collages containing information
about themselves. In order to do so, they should find words, phrases and photo-
graphs in newspapers and magazines you will provide (in the classroom). Another
possibility is to cut and paste images from the internet.
When your students have finished their collages, ask them to sit in small groups
and to explain and discuss the content in the posters.
Finally, ask your students to display their collages round the classroom walls.

17. A GREAT WIND BLOWS
Arrange your classroom chairs in an inward facing circle and have everyone sit
in a chair.
Stand outside of the circle and say the phrase “A great wind blows for everyone
who…” and fill in the statement with a characteristic that students may have in
common.
Any student that identifies with that particular characteristic must stand up and
move to a different chair.
Every time someone gets up, a chair is quickly removed.
Any child that cannot find a chair will step outside of the circle.
Repeat until there is only one child sitting.

A great wind blows for everyone who…

• has got brothers or sisters.
• plays video games.
• has got a pet.
• is a Boca fan.
• loves chocolate.
• can swim.
• has got brown hair.
• is a girl.
• is a boy.
