PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The objective of this truss design project is for a team of a maximum of 5 students to design and build
barbeque stick space frame which will hold a maximum load at the free end.

DIMENSION MNINIMUM (in mm) MAXIMUM (in mm)

LENGTH 500 -
WIDTH 100 150
DEPTH - 150

The material shall be a BBQ Stick, circular cross-section area. The structure must be three dimensional and
capable of fitting in the testing fixture provided. Maximum points for the testing portion of the grade will be
awarded for the lightest structure which will support the heaviest load. It was based on bridge structural efficiency
using this formula:

Efficiency= Max Load Supported/ Weight of the Bridge

CONSTRUCTION DETAILS

 No materials other than BBQ Stick, yarn and glue stick may be used. No part of the bridge may extend more
than ½ inch below support elevation.
 You can use any type of space frame.
 You can combine the barbeque stick to make a larger cross-sectional area of each member using the yarn.

TESTING PROCEDURE

 The truss will be placed on a wall, creating a cantilever beam using zip ties.
 You can create a hook to the square bar at the end of the truss and the load will be applied by adding a 1-
liter plastic bottle with water one at a time every 5 seconds. Add another weight. Repeat the procedure until
failure occurs.
 Failure is defined as the inability of the bridge to carry additional load without sagging 2 inches below the
supports.

THE GRADE

This project will count as your Final Examination and will be weighted as follow:

1. 10% Peer Evaluation- This will be coming from each group members. Members who did not cooperate will
not receive any credit points in this project.
2. 40% Design and Documentation Report. (Graded Individually) The grade will be based on completeness of
the report. Points will be taken off for things such as missing information, difficult to read report, missing
dimensions, or member labels on the drawing etc..

Here is the content of your Design and Documentation Report:

 Title page
 Introduction
 History of the Aircraft
 Procedure Conducted to perform the Space Frame Design Project
 Aircraft Design Details
 Documentation/ Pictures
 Conclusion
 References

3. 50% Testing of the Model. The lightest bridge to hold a maximum load will receive points based on the
efficiency table below. You need to submit a complete video recording of your testing activity showing all
the dimensions and results of your design.
