III. PROCEDURE

Teacher’s Activity Student’s Activity

A. Preliminaries
Good morning, class!
Good morning, sir
How are you today?
We are fine sir!
That’s good to hear class.
Well Ms. Secretary, who is absent today?
None, Sir!
I’m glad that all of you are present today class.
Kindly pass your assignment.
(Students pass their assignment)
B. Review
Before we start our new lesson for today, let’s
have a quick review about our last lesson.

The square of the length of the hypotenuse is

equal to the sum of the squares of the legs, what
do you call this theorem?
Pythagorean theorem sir!
Very good!
What is the formula in finding the hypotenuse?
2 2 2
c =a + b sir!
Very good!
How about in finding the legs?
2 2 2 2 2 2
a =c −b or b =c + a sir!
Excellent class!
Okay! I believe that you have already mastered
the concept of Pythagorean theorem.

Now! We will proceed to our new lesson!

C. Lesson Proper
1.Presentation
So, as we go through on our lesson for today, you
will encounter problems involving Pythagorean
theorem.

So, our topic for today is all about Solving

Problems involving Pythagorean theorem.

Is everybody ready?
Yes, Sir!
2.Discussion
Let’s look at the illustrative examples.
Example 1: A rectangular gate whose dimensions
are 3 meters by 4 meters is to be braced with a
steel by connecting opposite corners. How long
must the steel be?
Finding the length of the steel is actually looking
for the hypotenuse of a right triangle. Therefore,
we can use the Pythagorean Theorem.

Let c = length of the steel

c2 = a2 + b2
c2 = 32 + 42 Substitute
c2 = 9 + 16 Simplify
c2 = 25 Extract square root both sides.
√ c 2=√ 25
c=5

Therefore, the length of the steel is 5 meters.

Do you understand class?

Yes sir!
Very good!
Let us proceed to another example
Example 2: If the foot of a 10-meter ladder is
placed 6 meters away from a building, how high
up the building will the ladder reach?

Let b = height of the building

b2 = c2 - a2
b2 = 102 - 62
b2 = 100 – 36
b2 = 64
√ b2= √64
b=8

Therefore, the height of the building is 8 meters.

Can you follow class?
Very good! Yes sir!
Any question?

If that’s the case answer these in a half sheet of None sir!

paper.

D. Fixing skills
Direction: Solve what is being asked in the
problem and write your answer in a half sheet of
paper.

1. A rectangular closet is 8 meters wide and 15

meters long. Find the length of the diagonal of
the closet?
c2 = a2 + b2
c2 = 82 + 152
c2 = 64 + 225
c2 = 289
√ c 2=√ 289
c = 17

Therefore, the diagonal is 17 meters.

2. A 13-ft. ladder is leaning against a wall. The

base of the ladder is 5-ft. from the wall. How high
up the wall does the ladder reach?

b2 = c2 - a2
b2 = 132 - 52
b2 = 169 – 25
b2 = 144
√ b2= √144
b = 12

Therefore, the height of the wall is 12 meters.

Who got all?

(Students raised their hands)
Very good!
E. Generalization
What did you learn today?
(Students raised their hands)
Yes Denice!
I learn how to solve problems by applying the
Pythagorean theorem sir!
Excellent!
Any question class?
None sir!
If that’s the case answer these in a half sheet of
paper.
F. Evaluation
Direction: Solve what is being asked in the
problem and write your answer in a half sheet of
paper.

1. At late afternoon, the shadow of an object is

exceedingly long due to the low position of the
Sun. A 7-m lamp post casts a 24-m shadow. What
is the distance from the top of the pole to the tip
of its shadow?
c2 = a2 + b2
c2 = 72 + 242
c2 = 49 + 576
c2 = 625
√ c 2=√ 625
c = 25

Therefore, distance from the top of the pole to

the tip of its shadow is 25 meters.

Who got all?

(Students raise their hands)
Very good!
Now, copy your assignment.

IV. ASSIGNMENT
Direction: Solve what is being asked in the problem and write your answer in a half sheet of paper.

If the foot of a 13-meter ladder is placed at the building that is 12 meters high, how long the width
between the ladder and building on the ground?
