Phil Borell and Hamuera Kahi╇ are lecturers at Aotahi: School of Māori and
Indigenous Studies at the University of Canterbury. Both Phil and Hamuera
have used sport as a platform for their research, with Phil primarily working
with Polynesian masculinities in rugby league and Hamuera examining race and
racism in New Zealand rugby. Phil and Hamuera were both raised in
Christchurch but whakapapa further north to Ngati Ranginui and Ngati, Paoa
respectively.
Mary Breunig╇ is an associate professor of Recreation and Leisure Studies and
Graduate Program Director of the Social Justice and Equity Studies Program at
Brock University. Her scholarship focuses on social and environmental justice in
Outdoor Experiential Education. She has authored numerous books and papers.
She is a research consultant and former Outward Bound Instructor and a
National Outdoor Leadership School Instructor as well as past president of the
Association for Experiential Education. She is an outdoor enthusiast and urban

Mike Brown╇ is a senior lecturer at The University of Waikato. His teaching and
research are focused on outdoor learning. He is the co-author of A pedagogy of
Place: Outdoor Education for a Changing World; Adventurous Learning: A Pedagogy
for a Changing World; and co-editor of Seascapes: Shaped by the Sea. He is a keen
sailor and occasional mountain bike rider.
Daniel Burdsey╇ is Deputy Head of School (Research) in the School of Sport
Service Management at the University of Brighton, UK. His research focuses on
the sociology of race and popular culture, especially in relation to football and
to the English seaside. His article on British Asians, diaspora, and football was
selected for a special issue of Sociology, celebrating prominent contributions to
the study of race in that journal (edited by Nasar Meer and Anoop Nayak,
2013). His most recent book is Race, Place and the Seaside: Postcards from the
Edge (Palgrave Macmillan, 2016).
Robert Cassar╇ is a lecturer in marketing currently employed by the Ministry of
Education in Malta. He holds a bachelor’s degree in education from the

and Jewish identity, preservation of the heritage of Jewish sects, and moral edu-
cation. She is a director of student exchange programmes with Germany and
Poland, and a leader of academic assessment process at the Ariel University on
behalf of the CHE. She is also involved in the initiation and development of
national and international academic collaboration, curriculum development,
and development of curricula for special-needs populations.
Mary Ann Devine╇ is a professor at Kent State University in Kent, Ohio,
USA. She teaches courses in leisure studies and disabilities studies. Her research
centres on challenging the social construction of disability and promoting the
rights of those with disabilities in leisure contexts.
Sam Elkington╇ Joined the Higher Education Academy in December 2015
after 11 years of teaching in higher education institutions. Sam currently leads
on the HEA’s UK and international pedagogic enhancement work in academic
practice across disciplines. He continues to be active in the field of leisure stud-
ies, with his own research interests centring on the conceptualization of the idea
of leisure literacy, as well as understanding the shifting social and cultural geog-
raphies of contemporary leisure lifestyles.
Bruce Erickson╇ is an assistant professor in the Department of Environment
and Geography at the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg, Manitoba. His
work focuses on the cultural and economic politics of outdoor recreation and
tourism, paying attention to the role of environmental activism, race, gender,
sexuality, and nationalism in how we value nature through leisure. He is the
author of Canoe Nation: Nature, Race and the Making of a National Icon and the
co-editor of Queer Ecologies: Sex, Nature, Politics, Desire.
Karen Fox╇ is a professor at the Faculty of Physical Education and Recreation at
the University of Alberta. Her research rethinks theories of leisure grounded in
Indigenous worldviews, primarily Kanaka ʻŌiwi, and postcolonial theories
through comparative, collaborative, and autoethnographic approaches. She is
specifically interested in ways to decentre dominant conceptions of Western lei-
sure. Her current research includes a collaborative project with the Institute of
Hawaiian Language Research and Translation at the University of Hawaiʻi—
Manoa, funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of
Canada, that listens to Kanaka ʻŌiwi perspectives in Hawaiian-language news-
papers of the nineteenth century about their cultural practices and Western lei-
sure. Her work has been published in Leisure/Loisir, Leisure Studies, and
MUSICultures.

explores the personal and political links between women’s leisure and women’s
health, broadly defined. Diana’s research privileges women’s standpoints and
aims to create social change and enact social justice by challenging the medical
model of scholarship.
Steve Redhead╇ has published sixteen books, including Football and Accelerated
Culture: This Modern Sporting Life (Routledge, Research in Sport, Culture and
Society Series, 2015), We Have Never Been Postmodern: Theory at the Speed of
Light (2011), and The Jean Baudrillard Reader (2008). We Have Never Been
Postmodern: Theory at the Speed of Light was nominated for the American
Comparative Literature Association Rene Wellek Prize. He is the editor of the
Subcultural Style book series for Bloomsbury and a member of many interna-

Ken Roberts╇ is a professor of Sociology at the University of Liverpool. His
major research areas throughout his career have been the sociology of leisure and
the sociology of youth life stage transitions. He was a founder member of the
Leisure Studies Association, and has been the Chair of the World Leisure
Organization’s Research Commission and President of the International
Sociological Association’s Research Committee on Leisure. After 1989, he coor-
dinated a series of research projects in East-Central Europe and the former
Soviet Union. His current research is into youth in North Africa and the East
Mediterranean during and since the Arab Spring. Professor Roberts’ recent
books are Key Concepts in Sociology (2009), Youth in Transition: Eastern Europe
and the West (2009), Class in Contemporary Britain (2011), Sociology: An
Introduction (2012), The Business of Leisure (2015), and Social Theory, Sport,
Leisure (2016).
Thanassis Samaras╇ is a lecturer in Philosophy at the University of Georgia. He
is the author of Plato on Democracy (2002) and the Modern Greek Introduction,
Translation, and Commentary on Plato’s Apology and Crito (2003), as well as the
co-editor of Aristotle’s Politics: A Critical Guide (2015). He has published exten-
sively on the Pre-Socratics, Sophists, Plato, and Aristotle and contributed a
chapter to Christopher Bobonich (ed.), Plato’s Laws: A Critical Guide (2010).
David Scott╇ received his doctorate from the Pennsylvania State University in
1990. His research focuses on leisure constraints; use and non-use of park and
recreation services; and recreation specialization and serious leisure. Articles of
his have appeared in several scholarly journals, including Applied Behavioral
Science Review, Environment and Behavior, Journal of Leisure Research, Journal of
