Learning goals for unit: chemical reactions Okay

help nt

1 Describe a displacement reaction

and predict the products based on the reactivity series
2 Describe the reactions of acids with alkalis and bases
Describe the colours you would get for strong acid (red) or weak acid (orange or
yellow) and strong alkali (purple) weak alkali (blue) and a neutral (green) using
universal indicator
3 Describe the reactions of acids with metals and metal carbonates
NOT 4 Describe the practical method for preparing a salt from insoluble bases
with acids - will cover for end of year test!
5 List and describe some precipitation reactions

6 Describe and compare acidic and basic oxides

7 Describe a thermal decomposition reaction with some examples

8 Describe the test for some metal ions (flame tests), oxygen, hydrogen, carbon
dioxide and water
For Hydrogen use a flaming splint - it will produce a “squeaky pop” sound in
hydrogen gas
For oxygen it will relight a glowing splint
For Carbon dioxide use limewater - bubble through clear lime water which will
turn milky white or cloudy white in carbondioxide
NOT THIS - Flame testing for Lithium, Sodium, Potassium - will cover for end
of year test!
9 State the chemical formulas of the three main acids HCl, HNO3, H2SO4;
alkalis NaOH, KOH, LiOH;
some bases CuO, MgO, CaO; some carbonates CuCO3, MgCO3, CaCO3.
And salts from the 3 main acids, e.g. KCl, NaCl, KNO3, LiNO3, MgSO4, CaSO4
Define exothermic and endothermic reactions with some examples and identify a
reaction as either exothermic or endothermic using simple chemical energy
progression graphs
