Question 2:
Jolene had some green and red beads in a container.
48% of the beads were green while the rest were red.
When Jolene put 20 more red beads in the container,
45% of the beads were green.
After that, Jolene puts another 25 more red beads in the container.
What was the percentage increase in the total number of beads in the container at the end
compared to that in the container at first? [4m]
Solution:
G R
48% 52%
12 13
36u 39u
+20 red
45 55
9 11
36u 44u
44u – 39u = 5u
5u = 20
36u + 39u = 75u (at first)
75u = 300
20 + 25 = 45
45/300 = 15% Ans: 15%

Question 3:
In the figure, PQRS is a rectangle.
The areas of triangles PXQ, PXS and XSR are 144.5 cm², 44.14 cm² and 122.25 cm² respectively.
Find the area of triangle XSQ. [3m]
Solution:
144.5 + 122.25 = 266.75 (half rectangle, same as triangle PQS)
266.75 – 44.14 – 144.5 = 78.11 Ans: 78.11 cm2

Question 4:
The figures in the pattern below are made up of 1-cm squares.
The table below shows the number of squares and perimeter for each figure.
(a) How many 1-cm squares are there in Figure 88? [2m] [modified from KC2020PE]
(b) The area of a figure in this pattern is 7260 cm². Find the perimeter of this figure. [2m]
10 x 11 = 110 }
110 ÷ 2 = 55 } for figure 10
88 x 89 = 7832
7832 ÷ 2 = 3916 Ans: 3916
7260 x 2 = 14520
Square root 14520 about 120
120 x 121 = 14520 (figure 120)
120 x 4 = 480 Ans: 480 cm

Question 5:
The figure below is made up of 4 identical circles each of diameter 14 cm and
an equilateral triangle ABC of area 56 cm2.
22
Find the area of the shaded parts. (Take π = ) [5m]
7
22
x 7 x 7 = 154 (centre partially shaded circle)
7
154 – 56 = 98 (area of 3 “tortoise shells”)
2
98 ÷ 3 = 32 (area of 1 “tortoise shell”, the other side with some unshaded part)
3
2
56 ÷ 3 = 18 (1/3 of triangle)
3
2 2
32 – 18 = 14 (2 “half leaves”)
3 3
14 x 3 = 42 (6 “half leaves” total)
98 + 42 = 140 Ans: 140 cm2
