4

DEFINITION OF TERMS

ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI) - Artificial intelligence refers to the simulation of

human intelligence in machines that are programmed to think and learn like human it

involves the development of computer systems capable of human intelligence, such

as speech recognition, problem-solving, and decision-making

USAGE - Usage refers to the act of utilizing or employing something for a specific

purpose. In the context of artificial intelligence among senior high school students, it

refers to the application and utilization of AI technologies by students in their

academic pursuits or other activities.

SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL (SHS) - Senior high school is the final two years of the k-12

education system in many countries. Including the Philippines. It is a period of

education for students aged 16-18 years old, focusing on specialized subjects and

career tracks to prepare them for higher education on employment.

5

CHAPTER II

Review of Related Literature

The rise of artificial intelligence (AI) in the education sector has been remarkable in

recent years. AI-powered educational apps and tools are crafted to enrich students'

learning experiences by offering personalized, adaptable, and interactive study

materials. Here's a review of literature on the experiences of senior high school

students using AI-based educational applications and tools.

A research by Aljaberi et al. (2019) delved into the effects of AI-based educational

applications on senior high school students' academic performance. The findings

revealed a significant enhancement in students' performance across different

subjects due to the use of AI-based educational tools. The study also discovered that

students found these tools engaging and interactive, thus enjoyed using them.

Zhang et al. (2019) conducted another research to evaluate the efficacy of an AI-

based educational tool in boosting students' critical thinking skills. The tool was found

to significantly improve students' critical thinking abilities, as determined by a

standardized test. Students also found the AI-based tool beneficial in enhancing their

critical thinking skills.

In a similar vein, Kaur and Singh (2019) conducted a study to assess the

effectiveness of an AI-based educational tool in enhancing students' problem-solving

skills. The tool was found to significantly improve students' problem-solving abilities,

as determined by a standardized test. Students also found the AI-based tool

beneficial and enjoyable in enhancing their problem-solving skills.

This research article presents a comprehensive review of existing literature on the

impacts of using Machine Intelligence (MI) in public administration and develops a

plan for future studies. This review, based on 26 articles, uncovers a significant

amount of exploratory, theoretical, qualitative, and empirical research. The studies

highlight the growing complexities of utilizing MI in government and the ensuing

effects, opportunities, and risks for public administration.

Moreover, we put forth a future study plan that includes eight process-related

suggestions and seven content-related suggestions. As for the process, future

research on the effects of MI use for public administration should focus more on

public sector-focused, verifiable, multidisciplinary, and interpretive research. It should

also concentrate more on specific forms of MI rather than MI in general.

In terms of content, our study plan encourages the development of robust,

multidisciplinary, theoretical foundations for using MI for public administration. It also

urges investigations into effective execution, participation, and communication

strategies for government plans on MI use in the public sector.

Finally, the study plan calls for research into managing the risks of MI use in the

public sector, possible administrative modes for MI use in the public sector,

performance and impact assessment of MI use in government, and impact evaluation

of increasing MI usage in the public sector.

The swift escalation in AI deployment raises societal concerns about its safety,

reliability, robustness, fairness, and ethical integrity. This paper presents a

declaration intended as a code of conduct for AI researchers and application

developers. Born out of a workshop held in Barcelona in 2017 and further discussed

in various follow-up meetings, workshops, and AI schools, this publication serves as

a historical record and a means to publicize the declaration. It is meant to inform

more AI researchers and developers and to serve as a reference for policy makers

and industry leaders for governance. The rationale behind the declaration is also

discussed to stimulate further debates.

7

Intelligence encompasses a broad spectrum of abilities such as comprehension,

creativity, problem-solving, emotional control, strategizing, and self-awareness. As

noted in the article "Intelligence: Knowns and Unknowns," individuals differ in their

ability to understand complex concepts, adapt effectively to the environment, learn

from experiences, engage in various forms of reasoning, and overcome challenges

through thoughtful actions" (Neisser et al., 1996).

AI refers to the capacity to endow machines with human-like abilities, enabling

machines to develop and utilize these skills without human intervention. According to

Luger (2008), "AI can be described as the branch of computer science that is

dedicated to the automation of intelligent behavior" (Luger, 2009). Over time,

machines have taken on roles that involve physical tasks that do not require cognitive

or decision-making mechanisms. However, the need for human involvement persists.

Theoretical Framework

This research paper will be anchored to several theories related to technology in

education, learning theories, and user experience design.

The Technology Acceptance Model suggests that students’ attitudes towards AI-

based educational applications and tools’ perceived usefulness and ease of use

impact their intention to use it.
