correct answer to each of the questions (from 26 to 30).
A POLLUTED WORLD
The environment has been polluted in many different ways. The three major ways are water, land and
air pollution.
Water pollution is the contamination of lakes, caused by human activities. It can be harmful to
organisms and plants which live in the water. Water pollution occurs when wastes are discharged from waste
water treatment plants. Other known causes are factory wastes or leaking underground tanks. These can be
chemical substances that are toxic. The polluted water can cause cholera and typhoid fever. Water pollution
has led to the deaths of more than 14,000 people daily.
Land pollution is the destruction of the earth’s land surfaces. It is often caused by human activities
such as careless disposal of wastes, over-mining of minerals and wrong use of land for planting. All these will
affect our health in the long run. They will lead to all kinds of diseases such as cancer, heart disease and
breathing problems. Land pollution also brings about natural disasters such as flash floods and landslides.
Air pollution is also the result of human activity where chemicals and other dangerous materials are
released into the air. This happens through the release of carbon monoxide gas from exhaust pipes of motor
vehicles. Other gases such as sulphur oxides are released from the burning of coal and oil. High air pollution
levels can cause damage to the environment. It also brings discomfort to humans and other living organisms.
In the long term, air pollution can cause serious breathing problems, lung cancer and heart disease.

correct answer to each of the questions (from 26 to 30).
Global warming is said to be a culprit of many destructive natural damages. Many research shows that
glaciers in Antarctica and Greenland are melting quickly, which has a detrimental influence on ocean
currents. Cold lands are habitats of various polar mammals; therefore, ice melting means that their homeland
is shrinking in size, and they will be on the brink of extinction. Furthermore, scientists point out that the
global rising temperature results in the death of many coral reefs in many regions and the disappearance of
various kinds of fish. It is not to mention the fact that human life has also been threatened. Most
meteorologists and marine experts agree that the change of average heat worldwide links to the extensive
storms and hurricanes, and other naturally severe disasters happening around the planet. Recently, a
devastating tornado has badly torn a coastal state in the USA, killing at least 70 people and destroying a lot
of houses and infrastructure. The town mayor said that he had never seen such a violently tremendous natural
phenomenon before. Many European countries have also witnessed the rage of Mother Nature when they
have been hit by ferocious storms taking months to recover the local people’s normal life. No one will know
exactly the future, but the worst scenario of the earth can be predictable for sure if humans continue treating
the environment as they are doing. Global warming is an emergency issue that should be resolved
immediately.

Once there were lots of pandas in the mountains of Western China. Today they are becoming extinct. The
reason is they cannot find enough food. Pandas eat bamboo leaves. They do not like another food. The bamboo
grows very slowly. It can take ten years for a bamboo to grow from a seed to a big plant. Some types of bamboo

mountain side to grow food for man. The farmers cut down the bamboo. Bamboo leaves become less plentiful.
Pandas cannot find enough food to eat. They starve and die. China and World Wildlife Fund (WWF) are trying
to save the pandas. In 1979 they began to set up special parks where pandas can live. One such park is the
Wolong Reserve in Sichuan. The Wolong Reserve has the highest number of pandas in the world. Scientists
come here to study the pandas’ eating and mating habits. By learning more about the pandas’ habits, scientists
can save them from extinction.

turned off all non-essential lights for 60 minutes. Since then it has grown to a massive global event. In 2013,
more than 7,000 cities and towns worldwide participated in this campaign. Every year landmarks and well-
known buildings around the world such as the Sydney Opera House and Harbour Bridge, the Petronas towers

Forests cover 31% of the land area on our planet. They help produce clean water and air, and provide
people with jobs. About 13 million people across the world have a job in the forest industry and another 41
million have a job that is related to it. Many animals also rely on forests. Eighty percent of the world's land-
based animals, such as elephants and
rhinos, live in forests. Forests also play an important role in reducing climate change by absorbing CO₂ from
the atmosphere, thus making the air cleaner.
However, deforestation has put forests in many parts of the world at risk. This is mostly caused by
human activities. For example, in the Amazon around 17% of the forest has been lost in the last 50 years
mostly because people cut down trees to make room for more farms. Besides, wood trade is another direct
cause of deforestation. Every year around 15 billion trees are cut down and used for paper and wood products.
Climate change is also responsible for this problem. Extreme weather events like wildfires and floods destroy
much of the world's forests every year.
