The Evaluation of E-learning towards the students of junior high

school in developing country during covid 19

Abdul muhyi tardho, UNWIR, Indramayu
ABSTRACT : The enactment of an online learning system cused by corona virus
pandemic has not been tested for its effectiveness, especially learning english as
foreign language for students in eight grade at SMPN3 Indramayu. The Aim of
this study(1) learn and evaluate how effective online class student faced during
the covid 19 pamdemic, because during the the COVID pandemic the goverment
required the teaching and learning process to be done online. and also,(2)
advantage and disadvantages of E-learning, also (3)the impact of E-learning
toward the target of students’ learning especially in learning english. This research
is a qualitative research, study was taken from three junior hugh school students
by interviewing one by one through voice records in Whats App. The result shows
that this online class is enough to help the course of teaching and learning process
during the COVID 19 pandemic, but it is necessary to consider the burden of
learning so as not to equate with learning process on a normal day, explain
effectively the subject matter, and make the learning process enjoyable for
student.
1. Introduction
Online class are teaching and learning processes that use online media without the
need for face-to-face meeting. The use of tools and ways to learn online now is
very necessary, ofcourse this is a very good breaktrough. Like the learning system
that is the current trend, this also need to be examined the level of effeciveness
and weaknesses. Today the teaching and learning process is shifted to online class
because there is a goverment ban on the crowd to prevent COVID 19
transmission, because online classes are a new thing that students feel especially
in rural areas. The students in junior high school have difficulty in following the
teaching and learning process with online class or E-learning, because this is not
always a concern, then there are problem faced by students in facing online
learning. Many studies compare student performance in online classes (distance
learning) to student performance in traditional classes (face-to-face classes) .
However, less research has focused on web-enhanced course where tradidional
classes are integrated with online resouces (Tommy Wooten 2016). Because of
the lack of research on the effectiveness of online classes, in this journal the writer
will examine the effectiveness of online classes to find out how effective and
dificult it is for student. Schell (2015) emphasized that is imporntant to”know
what your audience like and does not like “ . for educational setting, it is
important to consider the needs, interest, experiense or preferences of the student
“audience” (kahan, soffer & nachmias 2017; park & choi 2009) by knowing what
students like and dislike, we can find ways of teaching and learning that are
interesting and can be absorbed easily by student so that students’ motivation can
be increased in online learning. Because learning method or teaching material that
are not interesting will make students bored so that students loss the enthusiasm of
learning that makes learning motivation decrease even tend to be lazy. the
challange of independent and self-organized learning in distance educatio can
often lead to a loss of motivation, which is reflected in higher drop-out rate
compared to traditional course of studies (Allen & seaman 2017; Vogel et al,
2018) educators are expected to be ready with this online learning system, because
they realy need expertise in making learning easy to absorb but still fun for
students, and as happens in the field not all educators have expertise in teaching
with this online way which is caused by a lack of experience in managing online
classes, lack of acces and so on which makes teaching and learning boring for
students, and lesson taught are not understood by students. Many question arise, is
teaching and learning using this online class effective ? what difficulties do
student feel in learning with online class?.
2. Literary review
- Education in covid19 pandemic
Since the goverment implements learning from home, working from home, and
worshiping from home or we usually use physical distancing, in an effort to
prevent the spread of the covid-19 virus, schools are closed and change teaching
and learning process by using online or oline classes. This online learning system
raises many problem faced by students and teachers, this is complaint from
student because the tasks given by the teachers are more numerous. Another
problem online learning is the signal acces is constrained, which causes it to be
slow in accessing information. Student are often late in accessing information
causing late in collecting assignment from the teachers. In addition to problem
and complaints that arise, there are many lessons that can be obtained. Among
them, students and teachers can master technology in online lerning that varies
greatly. Distance learning that varies greatly. Distance learning media is tried and
use as online learning media, namely : e-learning, zoom aplication, google
classroom, youtube, and whatsapp. The use of technology in assignment to
students can lead to students’ creativity in developing knowledge already
possessed. Learning at home allows students to be supervised by their parents, so
the role of parents is also very helpful in the online learning process because of
the covid-19. Parent can monitor the extent of their children‘s competence and
abilities, making communication between parents and children increasingly
intertwined with good. Luiz valdez (2017) active learning using smartphone
technology can be implemennted as a tool for teaching medical student (MS) and
resident (Rs). According to luiz faldez online learning using smartphones can be
used to teach students in medical classes and the community, this is what students
in indramayu feel they can certainly take part in online learning of course with
direction or clear guidance from their teacher. The challange of independent and
self-organized learning in distance education can ofte lead to loss of motivation,
which is reflected in higher drop-out rates compared to traditional course of
studies ( Allen & seaman 2017 ; vogel et al 2018) since leaning management
system are the main learning platform in distance education, learning activities are
major relevance for easly angaging students in their learning environment and
enhancing motivational learning behaviour (marczewski 2015; ryan & deci 2017)

- student in online learning

After conducting interviews with several students of junior high school 3

indramayu they only learned less than two hours a day in online learning, they
claimed to lack understanding of the teacher’s explanation through online media
and lack of socialization on how to use online media in learning. Adrian
(student) said that “ in a day i only learn twenty minutes a day because i lack
understanding about online learning or online classes”. Student have difficulty in
online class, the teacher must better explain the lesson and how to learn with
online media properly . student in online distance learning tend tobe
heterogeneous in that they vary widely not only in age and profession but also in
learning goals and learning preference (koper 2015). Schell (2015) emphasized
that i is important to know what your audiencelike and does not like . for
educational setting, it is important to consider the needs, interest, experience or
preference of student “audience” (kahan, soffer,&nachmias 2017; park & choi
2009 ) in educational setting, student’s motivation is always a crucial factor that
must be addressed. It is especially recognized in online and distance learning
( hartnet 2016, 2019; kim & frick 2011) the kind of online learning activity that is
useful for the learning process of students depens on the learning goal and desired
instruction. However, it is of interest for intructors to consider students’ learning
preferences and motivation to sopport involvement in online proposal (werbach &
hunter 2012)
