CHAPTER 3

METHODOLOGY
3.1 Research Design

The research method that is used to gather the necessary data for the research is in
quantitative and qualitative approach. It evaluates the research problem in a structured manner
while getting a thorough perspective or view of each research subject.

The data gathering is an ongoing process that’s started on 29th of April to this day, for a
more information about the subject’s preferences. This is to understand the impact of the proposed
project to the community or the individual living in the community.

3.1.1 Quantitative Research

The researcher used quantitative method as a way to collect data from people that
may be a possible user of the proposed building.

The adoption of quantitative research made it possible for the researcher to gain a
collective information about what the majority of the subject would like for the proposed
project. Quantitative research is more focused on numerical data that is a very useful tool
to generate a result with wider subject (i.e. community).

3.1.2 Qualitative Research

Qualitative research method was also used by the researcher in order to gain and
understand the possible effects of the project to the subjects. This is to look at the narrow
perspective of each individual that are living, studying or working near the location of the
proposed project.

The adoption of qualitative research method has led the researcher to have access
to information on what and how the strip mall could affect the subject and the community.
This is also a more effective approach in order to understand what the proposed project
would look like if the subjects are to give opinions that is based on experience as
student, professor, resident and/or worker around the area.

3.2 Research Locale

The research is conducted around the area for the proposed project along M.F. Jhocson
street in Sampaloc, Metro Manila. M.F. Jhocson street is located at 14°36'14.8"of North Latitude
and 120°59'36.0" of East Latitude that is part of Barangay 435, Sampaloc, Manila, Metro Manila.

M.F. Jhocson street is part of Barangay 435 in Sampaloc area of Metro Manila with a total
population as determined by the 2020 Census was 388, 305 with an annual population change of
0.73% in the year 2015 to 2020.

3.3 Research Instrument

The researcher used the following methods for the quantitative and qualitative research:

3.3.1 Primary Data

Data gathered directly from the subjects that includes online surveys, ocular
inspections, and technical data about the chosen location for the proposed project.

3.3.1.1 Online Survey

A method where subjects are able to answer questions comfortably via
gadgets such as phone, laptops and/or computer.

The researcher conducted the survey around the proposed location targeting
the residents, workers, and students around the area.

3.3.1.2 Online Written Interview

A method where the researcher would get the opportunity to gain a more in-
depth understanding of each subject.

The researcher made sure that the interviewees are comfortable in

answering the questions and are part of the community either as a student, worker
or resident.

3.3.1.2 Ocular Inspection

A data gathering method where the researcher conducts an ocular inspection

and visits the site to personally investigate what is the current condition of the area
around the two sites for the proposed project.

3.3.2 Secondary Data

3.3.2.1 Government Documents

Documents that are provided by the Government for public views. It

includes different statistics and reports for transparency; also used as data
gathering method for the study.
CHAPTER 4
DATA GATHERING
4.1 Data Analysis

In order to acquire the data necessary for the research, the research used 3 types of data
gathering methods.

4.1.1 Quantitative Analysis

A structured analysis where the data collected is more focused on what was the
highest percentage of preference compared to other options.

4.1.1.1 Grouping – This is to determine which group based in age and the subject’s
occupation will more likely be the user of the proposed strip mall project.

4.1.1.2 Percentage – By collecting data on which the most responders chose among
the choices, the researcher gains knowledge about the preference of the majority of the
responders. With this collection of data, the researchers will be able to determine which of
the choices will be more suitable for the community.

➢ The responder’s length of stay in malls.

➢ The shopping day preference (Mon, Tue, Wed, Thurs, Fri, Sat, Sun).
➢ The shopping time preference (Morning, Noon, and Evening).

4.1.2 Qualitative Analysis

By using a separate online survey, in which the goal is to gain more opinionated or
more personal answer, the researcher will be able to have a more in-depth understanding
of the subject’s perspective regarding the proposed strip mall project.

The target responders of the said survey are students (2), professors (2), residents
(3) and workers/vendors (3). This is to collect data that is not limited only people who are
connected to the National University such as students and the professors, thus, creating a
more informative and thorough study of the individual that is part of the community.

4.1.3 Ocular Inspection

Frequent visitation to the site were done by the researcher to observe the area
around the selected location for the proposed strip mall project.
This is done by going around the area at 3 specific time, morning, afternoon, and
evening. The researcher observes everything that happens at morning, afternoon, and
evening to see the necessary details specifically the activities such as the flow of people,
the traffic, and the interaction of everyone to each other.

4.1.4 Government Documents

Used to obtain information about the site and the surrounding area. Materials that
are necessary to know the existing conditions of the location.
CHAPTER 5
RESULT, ANALYSIS,
AND SYNTHESIS
5.1 Data Result

In this section of the study, detailed analysis will be provided in accordance with the
chapters 3 and 4 of the research. This includes the results of each data gathering method with an
extensive analysis.

5.1.1 Survey Analysis

5.1.1.1Demographics

Google form, an online survey platform that are easily accessible for
anyone, thus making the collection of data more at ease. The ideal target
respondents were 100 persons for a more accurate result, but the researcher lowered
the targets into 25 persons due to the limited time given to conduct the survey.

Visible in the result, the highest percentage of the respondents are female with 48% (24),
being followed the male respondents with 34% (17) and lastly, respondents wo belongs to the
LGBTQ+ community with 18% (9) of the total.
Here, the results showed that most of the respondents belonged to the age group of “young
adults” accumulating the 80% (40) of the result, followed by the “adult” that shows 16% (8) of the
respondents, leaving the “middle age” and “old age” group with 2% (1) each.

As for the occupation, college were the largest group to participate accumulating the 76%
(38) of the total result, next is the professors with 18% (9), and lastly, senior high schools with 6%
(3).

5.1.1.2 Shopping Habits

The result of the survey will show the preference of the respondents when
it comes to shopping habits.
• Preferences (Mall hours, time, and day)
• Preferences (ambience, design, parking)
• Other findings
