Sheet #5

1) A solid dielectric specimen of relative permittivity of 5 has an internal void of

thickness 0.6mm. the specimen is 3 cm thickness. If the void is filled with
atmospheric air, find the voltage applied to the specimen at which an internal
discharge can take place.

2) A solid dielectric specimen of relative permittivity of 6 has thickness of 5 mm.

the specimen has a dielectric strength of 25 kV/mm. What is the value of Young's
modulus of the specimen? assuming its failure occurs when the electrostatic
compressive forces just exceed the mechanical compressive strength.

3) A sample of solid diekectric has relative permittivity of 4, loss tangent tan δ of

0.05 and volume resistivityof 1012 ohm.cm. For an applied electric stress of 200
kV/cm and frequency of 50 Hz, calculate the total losses generated in the
specimen per unit volume.

4) A 22-kV single-core coaxial cable has core radius of 1 cm and sheath radius of 10
cm. The cable insulation is composed of two materials; the inner one with
dielectric constant εr of 4 and the outer one with εr of 2. The thickness of the
inner layer is 4 cm. Calculate the radial distribution of the electric stress through
the cable. If there is an airfilm exists between the inner and outer materials with
thickness 0.01 cm, calculate the field distribution in presence of the airfilm. Will
the airfilm breakdown?
