RESEARCH
TOPIC
Research Topic

Most of the useful topics can be found near

you. All you need to do is to define the topic
and the questions. However, before choosing
the topics, you will find there are other
philosophical and practical factors to
consider.
Factors to consider when selecting
a Research Topic (Shiela,2015)

1. Factors
2. Questions to answer.
Factor 1:
1.Size

2.Is your topic or question carefully

stated in a way that sets out the limits
of your study?

Have you focus your research in a way

that will keep you on track?
Factor 2:

1.Scope

2.Have you defined the scope in terms

of population and sample or setting and
case?
Factor 3:

1.Time

2.Have you made a calculated guess at

the length of time this study will take?

Is the study manageable in the time you

have at your disposal?
Factor 3:

2. Can you fit this study around your

other work, family or community
commitments?

Can you meet the necessary deadlines?

Factor 4:
1.Resources

2.Can you obtain the resources

(financial, material, administrative, and
personnel) required?

Do you have easy access to these or the

finances to support them?
Factor 5:

1.Skill

2.Do you have the data gathering and

analytic skills to conduct this study?
Factor 6:
1.Access

2.How easy is it to gain access to the site,

the sample population, and/ or cases you
need to study?

Can you get help or training if it is beyond

expertise?
Factor 7:

1.Prior Knowledge

2.How well do you know the field within which this topic
sits?

How familiar are you with the research, theoretical, and

methodological literature around this topic?

Do you know where to go for support or advice?

Factor 8:
1. Motivation

2.Will this topic hold your interest for the

required length of time?

Have you considered what intrinsic and

extrinsic incentives might keep you going
throughout the research?
SELECTING
THE
RESEARCH
TOPIC
In choosing a research topic, be guided by the
following criteria :

1. The topic must be new and different from

what has already been written about.
2. It should be aligned to your strand/course
or selected discipline.
In choosing a research topic, be guided by the
following criteria :

3. Choose a topic that you really want to do.

4. As a beginner, think of a topic that can be

done within a short period of time.
In choosing a research topic, be guided by the
following criteria :

5. It should be clear and specific. Avoid topic

which is uncertain and broad.
6. It should consider the training and
personal qualifications of the researchers.
In choosing a research topic, be guided by the
following criteria :

7. Researchers should think of a topic that

will match to the available efficient tools for
data gathering.
8. Researchers should consider the capacity
of their fund to support the research study.
In choosing a research topic, be guided by the
following criteria :

9. Researchers should think the time frame

for their research study.
10. It must necessarily arouse intellectual
curiosity.
RESEARCH
TITLE
WRITING YOUR RESEARCH TITLE
A research title concisely summarizes the

content of the study. It is important to ensure

that it differentiates the study from other existing

research.
CHARACTERISTICS OF
A WELL-STRUCTURED
RESEARCH TITLE
Focused and Direct

• Should include the variables and the

field of inquiry of the study

• Provides an idea of the study’s

contents
Formal

• Formal tone

● Should not contain abbreviations,

jargons, or colloquial terms unless
these are the main focus of the study
Brief but Substantial

• Usually composed of 16 essential

words

• Consists of the most important

information about the study
Clear

• Benefits those who do not know

much about the field of inquiry

• Helps those looking for references

Proper Grammar and Capitalization

• First letter of every word is capitalized

except for some words

• Proper use of coordinating conjunctions,

prepositions, and articles
STEPS IN WRITING
A GOOD
RESEARCH TITLE
1. Put the details of the research into
segments.

● The process of segmenting the details

of the research study is helpful in
determining and organizing important
information.
What is the primary objective of your
research?

The primary objective of the research is to

know whether listening to classical music
helps students in improving their
memorization skills.
What are the variables of the
study?
Independent variable: classical music
Dependent variable: memorization skills
What method will I use in the study?
How will I measure my variables?

I plan on performing an experiment.

Who will be the respondents of
the study?

Engineering students from XYZ

University

2. Make a list of keywords
based on the segments of the
research details.
Sample Keywords
● Listening to classical music
● Improving memorization
● Experiment
● Engineering students from XYZ university
3. Draft sentences that contain
the keywords.

In drafting sentences that contain

the keywords, be mindful of the
length of the sentence.
Example of a sentence containing the
keywords

The study will conduct an experiment to test

whether listening to classical music helps
engineering students from XYZ University
improve their memorization skills. (23
words)

4. Formulate your research
title.
Example of a possible research title

An Experimental Research on the Effects of

Classical Music to the Improvement of
Memorization Skills of Engineering Students
of XYZ University (21 words)
Example of a possible research title

Memorization Skills of Engineering
Students of XYZ University: A Research
Experiment (17 words)
Example of a possible research title
