PETRUS

Peter (Petrus) bears several names – Simon or Symeon, Simon Peter, Kephás, Cephas, Sharr’un al-Safa,
among others. He was a Galilean fisherman and the brother of Andrew. The brothers came from the village
of Bethsaida. Fishing was a rough, labor-intensive profession and fisherman were typically gruff,
boisterous, physically fearless, quick-tempered, and shabbily dressed.

Peter was a character who had many seemingly contradictory tendencies. He was fickle one day, while
fiercely committed the next; afraid of being accused as a religious zealot, but willing to sacrifice his life for
his belief; gentle, but tempestuous; a fisherman who was untrained in Mosaic Law or Greek, but became
“leader of the church; and quick to anger, but infinite in his forgiveness of others. Peter is unquestionably
“human” – not a perfect “angelic” halo’d figure, but a human-being with common flaws. But Peter was also
a human being with innate leadership capability. He rose above his “flaws” and became the first Pope,
and a leader of a cause/faith that remains strong 2100 years later. Like hundreds of others, he was killed
under the reign of Nero.

“Petrus” is a musical reflection of the character of Peter. In the “introduction,” an inner, haunting voice is
calling, “Petrus.” This is his conscience tugging at him. Then, as if a quick storm arose on the Sea of
Galilee, the music is immediately tempestuous. This is followed by the tenor/bass moment of reflection of
that inner voice returning – saying, “feed my lambs, tend my sheep….” There is a sense of urgency that
ensues as his commitment grows, and culminates with an outburst of emotion – “Alleluia!” Perhaps the
most pensive and emotional moment Peter has is in the next section where he feels an inner connection to
his cause and relentless ability to follow that cause at any cost. But in typical “Petrus” fashion, the music
returns to his tempestuous character at the end, and without historical context, one would wonder at this
point in the “story” whether Peter continued his new-found journey - casting his “net” for people, or whether
he returned to being a fisherman, and cast his net back into the sea.

Rehearsal notes...
Stones: When I (Randall) recorded PETRUS, I used stones hitting together as the percussion.
Stones, (in this context) are symbolic for Peter as the “rock of the church.” The conductor will need
to determine what is appropriate here, given the acoustics of the performance hall, and other factors. The
number of “players” of the percussion part (stones) can vary, but normally there are 4 to 8, and the
"players" are singers in the ensemble. The part indicates “T/B” (tenor/bass players) but it could be “S/A” or
two SATB quartets. Locate the stones in the center of the ensemble (four ensemble rows, so two players
per row in a strip through the middle). Precision will be more enhanced and organic. As one example –

CONDUCTOR
The “players” have a stone in either hand. The stones should be generally round and large enough to
make a compact, resonant noise when struck together, but small enough to fit easily in the palm of the
hand. (The size of a baseball is an approximate.) I know little about geology, and initially “tried out”
several rocks, and many quickly broke apart or simply had a thud and no resonance when struck
together. But after some experimentation, the best rocks were what I call “river rocks” – smooth surface,
oval-shaped from thousands of years of water running over them, and very dense/hard to break.
One final suggestion is to hold the stones up to near eye level when played. This is more visually effective
and the sound projects more easily over the chorus.

Chorus articulation of "h": The inclusion of the articulative "h" in the text is unusual. The sound of "h" itself
is not the goal, but rather the re-articulation of the preceding syllable. ("Pe-h-trus" = Peh-heh-trus") This is
true also for "gemeinde", "will", and so on.

About the composer...


Z. Randall Stroope is an American composer and conductor. His composition teachers were Normand
Lockwood and Cecil Effinger, both students of Nadia Boulanger, the famous French teacher (and student
of Gabriel Fauré.) He is the artistic director of two international summer music festivals, as well annually
conducting at Carnegie Hall, Chicago Orchestra Hall, and other U.S. and international venues. He
has 200 published musical works and has received numerous composition awards. Recordings of his
