LIFE CONTEXT
American astronomer
Childhood: Her mother took her outside to observe
constellations. This is where she became entranced with
astronomy.

For her work she was dubbed “Mother of the
Hubble”

classification

Important Discoveries
stars made of hydrogen and helium move faster than stars
composed of other heavier elements
not all stars that were common were the same age
credited with making the Hubble Space Telescope a reality.
she set up a committee of astronomers and engineers to
envision a telescope that could accomplish important
scientific goals.

FACTS
She was the first chief of astronomy at NASA and the
first woman to hold an executive position there.
Her father was a geophysicist and her mother was a
music teacher
By 6th grade, she had organized her friends into an
astronomy club, and then in 7th grade she knew that
she wanted study the cosmos.
