Liver Enzymes

Alanine Aminotransferase

Also known as SGPT or serum glutamic pyruvic transaminase

Transfer amino group from alanine to alpha ketoglutarate with
formation of glutamate and pyruvate
Major source: Liver (hepatocytes)
Other source: Kidney, Pancreas, RBC, Heart, Skeletal muscles, Lungs
Significance: Hepatocellular disorders and acute inflammatory
conditions of liver
Alanine Aminotransferase

COENZYME
Clinical Significance
Pyridoxal phosphate -
Increase with liver disease. activates ALT
It also monitors the course of hepatitis treatment and the No pyridoxal phosphate
effects of drug therapy
no ALT function
ALT measurement is a more sensitive and specific screening
test for posttransfusion hepatitis or occupational toxic
exposure
Not affected by hemolysis
The clinical situation in toxic hepatitis is
different from that infectious hepatitis
