1. How is social stratification differ from social differentiation?

Social stratification refers to the division of society into different hierarchical layers or classes
based on factors such as wealth, occupation, and social status. It involves the unequal
distribution of resources, opportunities, and privileges among individuals or groups. On the
other hand, social differentiation refers to the process by which individuals or groups are
categorized or distinguished based on characteristics such as age, gender, race, and
education. It focuses on recognizing and acknowledging the differences among individuals
or groups.

2.How is open system of social stratification differ from closed system of social
stratification?

An open system of social stratification allows for social mobility, where individuals have the
opportunity to move up or down the social ladder based on their abilities, achievements, and
efforts. In an open system, social positions are not fixed and individuals can change their
social status over time. In contrast, a closed system of social stratification restricts social
mobility, where social positions are rigidly defined and individuals have limited or no
opportunity to change their social status. In a closed system, social positions are typically
determined by ascribed characteristics such as family background, birth, and inherited
wealth.

3.Does inequality of prestige exist in the Philippines? Explain.

Yes, inequality of prestige does exist in the Philippines. This refers to the unequal distribution
of social status and recognition based on factors such as wealth, occupation, education, and
social connections. Individuals who possess higher levels of wealth, education, and
prestigious occupations tend to enjoy higher levels of prestige and social status. On the
other hand, individuals who lack access to quality education, work in low-paying or less
prestigious jobs, or come from marginalized backgrounds experience lower levels of
prestige. Cultural factors also contribute to inequality of prestige, as certain practices or
accents may be associated with lower prestige. Efforts to address inequality of prestige in
the Philippines focus on improving access to education, promoting equal opportunities, and
challenging cultural biases.
