Exercise 1
Mathematics in our World
2. Describe three other patterns of shapes that you see in nature. Discuss briefly the
“mathematics” behind such patterns.
Fractals & Spirals
We see this type of pattern in trees, rivers, mountains, shells, clouds, leaves, lightning, and
more. Spirals are another common pattern in nature that we see more often in living things.
Symmetry is when different sides of something are alike. These reflections may be mirror
images with only two sides, like the two sides of our bodies; they may be symmetrical on
several sides, like the inside of an apple sliced in half; or they might be symmetrical on all
sides, like the different faces of a cube.
3. Give an example of a pattern that occurs in nature but does not involve numbers.
Trees
Spirals
Meanders
Waves
Tessellations
Cracks and stripes
4. Use the golden ratio to divide the line segment L with length of 12 units into two segments
L1 and L2. Specify the lengths rounded off to two decimal places.
