Are some people born clever and others born (51)………….? Or is intelligence developed by our
environment and our experience? Strangely enough, the answer to both these (52)………….is “Yes”. To
some extent, our intelligence is given at birth, and no amount of special education can make a genius out
of a (53)………….born with low intelligence. On the other hand, a child (54)………….lives in a boring
surrounding will develop his intelligence less than the one who lives in rich and varied surrounding. Thus
the limits of a person’s intelligence are fixed at birth but (55)…………or not he reaches those limits will
(56)…………..on his environment. This view, now hold by most experts, can be supported in a number of
ways. It is easy to show that intelligence is something we are born with (57)…………...we take two
unrelated people at random from the population. It is likely that (58)………….degrees of intelligence will
be completely different. If, on the other hand, we take children – identical twins, they will very likely be
(59)…………..intelligent as others. This clearly suggests that intelligence depends on (60)………….. .

those sounds, and which could be written down. These sounds, (65) …………. spoken or written in letters,

Great writers are those who not only have great thoughts but also express these thoughts in words
that (66) …………. powerfully to our minds and emotions. This charming and telling use of words is what
we call literary (67) ………….. Above all, the real poet is a master of words. He can (68) ………….his

In sport the sexes are separate. Women and men do not run or swim in the same races. Women are
not as strong as men. That at least is what people say. Women are called “the weaker sex”, or, if men want
to please them, “the fair sex”. However, boys and girls are taught together at schools and universities.
There are women who are famous Prime Ministers, scientists and writers. And women live longer than
men. A European woman can expect to live until the age of 74, a man only until he is 68. Are women’s
bodies really weaker?
The fastest men can run a mile in under 4 minutes. The best women need 4.5 minutes. Women’s
times are always lower than men’s, but some facts are surprising. Some of the fastest women swimmers
today are teenage girls. One of them swam 400 meters in 4 minutes 21.2 seconds when she was 16. The
first “Tarzan” in films was an Olympic swimmer, Jonny Weissmuller. His fastest 400 meters was 4
minutes 59.1 seconds lower than a girl 50 years later! This does not mean that women are catching men
up. Conditions are very different now, and sport is much more serious. It is so serious that some women
athletes are given hormone injections. At the Olympics a doctor has to check whether the women athletes
are really women or not. It seems sad that sport has such problems. Life can be very complete when there
are two separate sexes!
71. Women are called “the weaker sex” because
A. women do as much as men. B. people say women are weaker than men.
C. sport is easier for men than for women. D. in sport the two sexes are always together.
72. Which of the following is true?
A. Boys and girls study separate everywhere. B. Women do not run or swim in races with men.
C. Famous Prime Ministers are women. D. Men can expect to live longer than women in Europe.
73. “That at least is what people say.” means people
A. say other things too. B. don’t say this much.
C. say this but may not think so. D. only think this.
74. What problem does sport have?
A. Some women athletes are actually men.
B. Some women athletes are given hormone injections.
C. Women and men do not run or swim in the same race.
D. It is difficult to check whether women athletes are really women.
75. In this passage the author implies that
A. women are weaker than men, but faster.
B. women are slower than men, but stronger.
C. men are not always stronger and faster than women.
D. men are faster and stronger than women.

Lead poisoning in children is a major health concern. Both low and high doses of paint can have
serious effects. Children exposed to high doses of lead often suffer permanent nerve damage, mental
retardation, blindness and even death. Low doses of lead can lead to mild mental retardation, short
attention spans, distractibility, poor academic performance, and behavioural problems.
This is not a new concern. As early as 1904, lead poisoning in children was linked to lead-based
paint. Microscopic lead particles from paint are absorbed into the bloodstream when children ingest flakes
of chipped paint, plaster, or paint dust from sanding. Lead can also enter the body through household dust,
nail biting, thumb sucking, or chewing on toys and other objects painted with lead-based paint. Although
American paint companies today must comply with strict regulations regarding the amount of lead used in
their paint, this source of lead poisoning is still the most common and most dangerous. Children living in
older, dilapidated houses are particularly at risk.

74. According to the passage, what is the most common source of lead poisoning in children?

Before the 1500’s, the western plains of North America were dominated by farmers. One group, the
Mandans, lived in the upper Missouri River country, primarily in present – day North Dakota. They had
large villages of houses built close together. The tight arrangement enabled the Mandans to protect
themselves more easily from the attacks of others who might seek to obtain some of the food these highly
capable farmers stored from one year to the next.
The women had primary responsibility for the fields. They had to exercise considerable skill to
produce the desired results, for their northern location meant fleeting growing seasons. Winter often
lingered; autumn could be ushered in by severe frost. For good measure, during the spring and summer,
drought, heat, hail, grasshoppers, and other frustrations might await the wary grower.
Under such conditions, Mandan women had to grow maize capable of weathering adversity. They began as
early as it appeared feasible to do so in the spring, clearing the land, using fire to clear stubble from the fields
and then planting. From this point until the first green corn could be harvested, the crop required labor and
vigilance.
Harvesting proceeded in two stages. In August the Mandans picked a smaller amount of the crop
before it had matured fully. This green corn was boiled, dried and shelled, with some of the maize slated
for immediate consumption and the rest stored in animal – skin bags. Later in the fall, the people picked
the rest of the corn. They saved the best of the harvest for seeds or for trade, with the remainder eaten
right away or stored for alter use in underground reserves. With appropriate banking of the extra food, the
Mandans protected themselves against the catastrophe of crop failure and hunger.
The women planted another staple, squash, about the first of June, and harvested it near the time of the
green corn harvest. After they picked it, they sliced it, dried it, and strung the slices before they stored
them. Once again, they saved the seeds from the best of the year’s crop.
76. The Mandans built their houses close together in order to ____________.
A. protect themselves against the weather B. allow more room for growing corn
C. share farming implements D. protect their supplies of food
77. Why does the author believe that the Mandans were skilled farmers?
A. They developed very effective fertilizers. B. They could grow crops despite adverse weather.
C. They developed new varieties of corn. D. They could grow crops in most types of soil.
78. The word “catastrophe” in paragraph 4 is closest in meaning to __________.
A. disaster B. history C. avoidance D. control
79. Throughout the passage, the author implies that the Mandans _________.
A. valued individuality B. planned for the future C. were very adventurous D. were open to strangers

The first question we might ask is: What can you learn in college that will help you in being an
employee? The schools teach a (60) ……………… many things of value to the future accountant, doctor
or electrician. Do they also teach anything of value to the future employee? Yes, they teach the one thing
that it is perhaps most valuable for the future employee to know. But very few students bother (61)
………… it. This basic skill is the ability to organize and express ideas in writing and in speaking. This
means that your success as an employee will depend on your ability to communicate with people and to
(62) ……………… your own thoughts and ideas to them so they will (63) ……………… understand what
you are driving and be persuaded.
Of course, skill in expression is not enough for itself. You must have something to say in the first
place. The effectiveness of your job depends (64) ……………… your ability to make other people
understand your work as they do on the quality of the work itself.
Expressing one’s thoughts is one skill that the school can (65) ……………… teach. The
foundations for skill in expression have to be (66) ……………… early: an interest in and an ear for
language; experience in organizing ideas and data, in brushing aside the irrelevant, and above all the habit
of verbal expression. If you do not lay these foundations (67) ……………… your school years, you may
never have an opportunity again.

Some people believe that soon schools will no longer be necessary. These people say that because
of the Internet and other new technology, there is no longer any need for school buildings, formal classes,
or (68) …………. . Perhaps this will be true one day, but it is hard for me to imagine a world (69) ………
schools. In fact, we need to look at how we can use new technology to make schools (70) ………….., not
to eliminate them. We should invent a new kind of school that is linked to libraries, museums, science
centers, laboratories, and even corporations.
Corporations ought to create learning programs for schools in their area of expertise. Independent
experts could (71) …………… talks on video or over the Internet. TV networks and local stations could
develop programming about things students are actually (72) …………. in schools. Laboratories could set
up websites to demonstrate new technology so students could view it on the Internet.
Is this just a dream? No. Already there are several towns where this is beginning to happen. Blacksburg,
Virginia, is one of them. Here the entire city is linked to the Internet, and learning can take place at home,
at school, and in the office. Businesses provide programs for the schools and the community. The schools
provide computer labs for people without their (73) …………… computers. Because everyone has Internet
access, older people participate as much as (74) …………… ones, and everyone can visit distant libraries
and museums as easily as nearby (75) …………..
How will this new kind of school change learning? It is too early to be sure, but it is very exciting
to think about. Technology will change the way we learn; schools will change as well and we will all learn
something in the process.
XIII. Đọc đoạn văn dưới đây và chọn đáp án đúng trong số A, B, C hoặc D. (5,0 đ)
The Moon has been worshipped by primitive peoples and has inspired humans to create everything
from lunar calendars to love sonnets, but what do we really know about it? The most accepted theory about
the origin of the Moon is that it was formed of the debris from a massive collision with the young Earth
about 4.6 billion years ago. A huge body, perhaps the size of Mars, struck the Earth, throwing out an
immense amount of debris that coalesced and cooled in orbit around the Earth.
The development of Earth is inextricably linked to the Moon; the Moon’s gravitational influence
upon the Earth is the primary cause of ocean tides. In fact, the Moon has more than twice the effect upon the
tides than does the Sun. The Moon makes one rotation and completes a revolution around the Earth every 27
days, 7 hours, and 43 minutes. This synchronous rotation is caused by an uneven distribution of mass in the
Moon (essentially, it is heavier on one side than the other) and has allowed the Earth’s gravity to keep one
side of the Moon permanently facing the Earth. It is an average distance from Earth of 384,403 km.
The Moon has no atmosphere; without an atmosphere, the Moon has nothing to protect it from
meteorite impacts, and thus the surface of the Moon is covered with impact craters, both large and small.
The Moon also has no active tectonic or volcanic activity, so the erosive effects of atmospheric weathering,
tectonic shifts, and volcanic upheavals that tend to erase and reform the Earth’s surface features are not at
work on the Moon. In fact, even tiny surface features such as the footprint left by an astronaut in the lunar
soil are likely to last for millions of years, unless obliterated by a chance meteorite strike. The surface
gravity of the Moon is about one-sixth that of the Earth’s. Therefore, a man weighing 82 kilograms on
Earth would only weigh 14 kilograms on the Moon. The geographical features of the Earth most like that
of the Moon are, in fact, places such as the Hawaiian volcanic craters and the huge meteor crater in
Arizona. The climate of the Moon is very unlike either Hawaii or Arizona, however; in fact the
temperature on the Moon ranges between 123 degrees centigrade to –233 degrees centigrade.
76. What is the passage primarily about?
A. the Moon’s effect upon the Earth.
B. the origin of the Moon.
C. what we know about the Moon and its differences to Earth.
D. a comparison of the Moon and the Earth.
77. According to the passage, which of the following is TRUE about the Moon?
A. It is older than the Earth.
B. It is protected by a dense atmosphere.
C. It is composed of a few active volcanoes.
D. It is the primary cause of the Earth’s ocean tides.
78. The word “uneven “ in line 9 is closest in meaning to ……………..
A. heavier B. equally distributed C. orderly D. not uniform

Page 4/5
79. Which of the following is NOT true about the Moon?
A. it has a wide range of temperatures.
B. it is heavier on one side than the other. Shared by Angels of Otto
C. it is unable to protect itself from meteorite attacks.
D. it has less effect upon the tides than the Sun.
Channel
80. Which of the following can be inferred from the passage?
A. the Moon is not able to support human life.
B. if the Moon had no gravitational influence, the Earth would not have tides.
C. people living in Hawaii and Arizona would feel at home on the Moon.
D. Mars could have been formed in a similar way to the Moon.

lies geographically in Southeast Asia, long periods of Chinese domination and influence has
resulted in the emergence of many East Asian characteristics in Vietnamese culture, and generally

be one of the defining aspects of early Vietnamese civilization. Vietnam’s population in 2006 was
84,402,966, with a population density of 253 people per km2. Most people live in or near the
densely populous Red River or Mekong deltas. Due to the nation’s southward expansion

In Viet Nam, festivals often take place during the three months in spring and in autumn when
people have a lot of leisure time. In addition, the climate in spring and autumn is especially suitable
for holding festivals and for festivals goers to enjoy. Traditional festivals constitute a form of cultural
activities, a spiritual product which the people have created and developed during the course of
history.
From generation to generation, the Vietnamese people preserve the fine tradition of
“remembering the source while drinking water”. Festivals are events which represent this tradition
of the community as well as honour the holy figures named as “gods” - the real persons in national
history or legendary persons. The images of gods converge the noble characteristics of mankind.
They are national heroes who fought against foreign invaders, reclaimed new lands, treated people,
fought against natural calamities, or those legendary characters who affect the earthly life.
Accordingly, first and foremost, festivals are events when people pay tribute to divinities that
rendered merits to the community and the nation. These are occasions when people come back to
either their natural or national roots, which form a sacred part in their mind. Furthermore, festivals
represent the strength of the commune or village, the local region or even the whole nation.
Worshipping the same god, the people unite in solidarity to overcome difficulties, striving for a happy
and wealthy life.
Moreover, festivals display the demand for creativity and enjoyment of spiritual and material
cultural values of all social strata. They become a form of education under which fine traditional
moral values can be handed from one generation to the next in a unique way of combining spiritual
characters with competition and entertainment games. Festivals are also the time people can express
their sadness and worries in a wish that gods might bestow favour on them to help them strive for a
better life.

Part 3. Read the following passage and choose the letter A, B, C or D to indicate the correct
answer to each question.
Reading to oneself is a modern activity which was almost unknown to the scholars of the
classical and medieval worlds, while during the fifteenth century the term “reading” undoubtedly
meant reading aloud. Only during the nineteenth century did silent reading become
commonplace.
One should be wary, however, of assuming that silent reading came about simply because
reading aloud was a distraction to others. Examinations of factors related to the historical
development of silent reading have revealed that it became the usual mode of reading for most
adults mainly because the tasks themselves changed in character.
The last century saw a steady gradual increase in literacy and thus in the number of
readers. As the number of readers increased, the number of potential listeners declined and thus
there was some reduction in the need to read aloud. As reading for the benefit of listeners grew
less common, so came the flourishing of reading as a private activity in such public places as
libraries, railway carriages and offices, where reading aloud would cause distraction to other
readers.
Towards the end of the century, there was still considerable argument over whether
books should be used for information or treated respectfully and over whether the reading of
materials such as newspapers was in some way mentally weakening. Indeed, this argument
remains with us still in education. However, whatever its virtues, the old shared literacy culture
had gone and was replaced by the printed mass media on the one hand and by books and
periodicals for a specialised readership on the other.
By the end of the twentieth century, students were being recommended to adopt attitudes
to books and to use reading skills which were inappropriate, if not impossible, for the
oral reader. The social, cultural and technological changes in the century had greatly altered
what the term “reading” implied.
71. Reading aloud was more common in the medieval world because ……………….. .
A. people relied on reading for entertainment
B. silent reading had not been discovered
C. there were few places available for private reading
D. few people could read to themselves
72. The development of silent reading during the last century indicated ………………... .
A. an increase in the average age of readers B. an increase in the number of books
C. a change in the nature of reading D. a change in the status of literate people
73. Silent reading, especially in public places, flourished mainly because of …………… .
A. the decreasing need to read aloud B. the development of libraries
C. the increase in literacy D. the decreasing number of listeners
74. The phrase “oral reader” in the last paragraph mostly means “a person who ……………. .”
A. is good at public speaking B. practises reading to an audience

Page 4 of 5 papers
C. takes part in an audition D. is interested in spoken language
75. Which of the following statements is NOT TRUE according to the passage?
A. Reading aloud was more common in the past than it is today.
B. The decline of reading aloud was wholly due to its distracting effect.
C. Not all printed mass media was appropriate for reading aloud.

Model essay:
Obviously, the first teachers we have in our lives in most cases are our parents. They
teach us to walk, to speak, and to have good manners before we reach "the real world." More
than even the professional teachers that we have in school, parents are generally the most
involved in the development and education of children.
Almost for sure, our parents are the best teachers at the beginning of our lives, which
actually corresponds to the parents' role in nature. Parents are most committed and involved in
teaching their children; they have a kind of instinct to sacrifice a part of themselves for the
betterment of their children. They love us and have great patience while passing down their
knowledge to us. They wish us a success and thus will not teach us bad things. And of course,
implicit learning occurs when children unconsciously copy some of their parents' habits and
styles of behavior.
During the second stage of child development, adolescence, parents can still be in the
best position to offer advice even though the children might not accept it. In this case, perhaps
the child's friends would be the best teachers. Adolescents are notoriously rebellious in many
cultures and may automatically reject any advice from their parents. My first marriage for
instance, was solely a matter of doing the opposite when my parents tried to intrude in offering
their advice. So in such matters, parents should be much more flexible and be rather the partners
with their children. So we can see that being a teacher of growing child become more and more
complicated case as the time passes and many parents are simply not able to meet the increased
demands.
On the other hand, I would say that parents are not professional teachers and they tend
to be very biased by their love of their children. So wishing good things and an easy life may
prevent children from maturation. In any case, parents usually can present only one viewpoint of
the world, while good teaching should be based on different attitudes. Thus, when children go to
school and have a great diversity of teachers, they learn much more than their parents could
probably give them. Furthermore, once our parents get older, they become more conservative
and cannot always be objective in regard to modern trends and fashions. Thus, we need to take
their advice with caution during that period. However, some kind of intuition, which I believe,
shared between relatives about what everybody needs and great love, which exists in families,
still makes our parents very good teachers and advisers at any time.
In conclusion, while parents are not the ideal teachers, and well-rounded children will
generally need a great diversity of teachers in their lives in order to have a more accurate view
of the world, parents are generally the most committed of all teachers and have the greatest
emotional investment in their children and their future.

XI’AN’S TERRACOTTA WARRIORS

0 D
One of the greatest cities in the history of civilization, Xi’an had become little more than a small
provincial town before the discovery of its terracotta warriors. Since then, it has become one of the most
important tourist destinations in the world and its prosperity has increased correspondingly.
76
The world-famous terracotta warriors were unearthed in 1974 by local farmers who were
digging a well. The army of soldiers made out of baked clay turned out to be one of the most
important archaeological finds of the twentieth century.
77
The warriors were made to protect the tomb of the First Emperor, Qin Shihuang, which lies
beneath a hill 1.5 km away. Work on the tomb began in 246 BC as soon as the Emperor came to
power, and records say that it is filled with model palaces and even a model of China itself, with
rivers of mercury that can actually be made to flow. As yet, however, the tomb remains unexplored
and there is no confirmation of these wonders.

78
So far, interest has focused instead on the life-size soldiers lined up in wide ditches to the
east. They stand in military formation and have some armour but no helmets (which were reserved
for officers). They did, however, originally carry real weapons, made of metal, which were stolen by
robbers soon after the Emperor’s death.
79
The statues themselves were made of local clay. No two faces are alike – each is a personal
portrait. Each body was made separately. The legs are solid, but the rest is hollow, with hands and
head added later. Details such as beards and ears were sculpted afterwards, then the whole was
brightly painted. It is uncertain quite why so much trouble was taken, but one theory is that the
different faces, many of which belong to what have become minority races, are a celebration of the
first unification of China.
80
In addition to the foot soldiers, tourists can see horses and chariots. Examples of all the finds
are on display in separate exhibition halls which allow closer inspection than is possible with the
majority of figures in the ditches. It is forbidden to photograph or video the main army but
photography is permitted elsewhere. There is no doubt that a visit to the warriors of Xi’an is the
highlight of their tour for many visitors to China.

LAKE DISTRICT WATER PLAN SCRUTINISED
A public inquiry opened yesterday into plans to pump extra water from the Lake District National Park
to refill reservoirs drained by drought. United Utilities has submitted its proposals to take water from two
lakes, Windermere and Ullswater, to public scrutiny because of concerns about the potential damage to
wildlife.
Anglers are concerned that spawning sites for salmon and trout could dry out if water is drained from
the rivers that flow from the lakes. But the utilities company insists that removing and treating the extra
water will not hurt local flora and fauna. The hearing, headed by the government inspector, Stuart Nixon,
is being held in the Cumbrian town of Windermere and will last for two days. A final decision is expected
to be taken later this month by Margaret Beckett, the Environment Secretary.
United Utilities insists that the drought orders are necessary to prevent the further depletion of water
from two of its reservoirs in the Lake District, Haweswater and Thirlmere. Because of the unusually dry
summer this year, Haweswater has only 53 per cent of its capacity compared with 68 percent at the same
time last year. Thirlmere has just 47 percent, whereas last year it had 79 percent.
If United Utilities is given the go-ahead, it would be able to take extra water from the Windermere
and Ullswater rivers – Leven and Eamont respectively – this winter, rather than having to take emergency
measures next year. Water from Ullswater would be piped into Haweswater reservoir; water from
Windermere would enter the local supply, and prevent further depletion of Thirlmere. Water supplies would
reach two million people in Manchester, Lancashire, south Cumbria and parts of Cheshire.
Cumbria Wildlife Trust said taking extra water could pose problems for wildlife if not properly
managed. But a spokesman said it was not opposing United Utilities' plans because it was better for water
to be drained in the wet winter months rather than in the summer. ‘If they don’t have to do it now, they will
have to do it in April,’ the spokesman said.
Dickon Knight, the agent for the landowner Holker Estates, said the proposed minimum flows on the
river Leven would harm efforts to protect salmon stocks. Alistair Maltby, the manager of the Eden Rivers
Trust, said taking water from the rivers during the winter was the best approach but urged United Utilities
to mend leaks in its pipes in the long run. Gary Dixon, customer service manager at United Utilities, said,
‘We can’t predict what supplies will be like over the winter. Normally this is when our reservoirs would
refill but if the low rainfall continues we need to start planning ahead for next summer. Taking action now
will have a lower impact on the river environment than during the spring.’
The company said the deluge of rain in recent weeks was helping to top up the reservoirs. John
Carberry, a spokesman, said, ‘There is no crisis and no panic, but we are looking ahead for next year. There
is a potential impact on the environment which is why we are seeking permission to do what we want to
do.’ The Environment Agency said it would work with the utility company to ensure any damage to fish
stocks was kept to a minimum.
66. According to the opening paragraph, the controversy arose due to ________.
A. a proposed scheme to top up water supplies
B. excessive water in local lakes
C. civilians protesting over a threat to the environment
D. a possibility that reservoirs could be contaminated
67. Who does the outcome of the proposal ultimately rest with?

sentences have been removed from the article. Choose from the sentences A-H the one which fits each
gap (74-80). There is one extra sentence which you do not need to use. (7pts)
THE LIFE OF WILDLIFE PHOTOGRAPHER
Next year, Heather Angel plans to be away from her home for five or six months, carrying her camera
equipment to Japan, China, Hungary, eastern Greenland, Arctic Russia, Botswana, Australia and the USA.
‘I used to hate working in the Arctic because I used to get so cold,’ she says with typical jollity. ‘But
that was because I didn’t have the right equipment. Now I do have all the right things for different climates
and I have a wardrobe for polar clothing and another full of tropical suits and so forth. You have to be
organized to be a wildlife photographer.’ (74) _________ And there’s more to it than simply having the
right sun hat, as Heather Angel should know, since she is one of Britain’s best-known photographers of the
natural world.
Indeed, according to Nottingham Photographic Society, which is one of the many organizations that
have invited her to give an illustrated talk, she is ‘one of the world’s truly great natural history
photographers’. (75) _________ For example, the University of Nottingham recently appointed her as the
first UK professor of wildlife photography.
As a child, Heather was always interested in the natural world. ‘I used to collect insects in the jars and
my grandparents taught me the names of all the wild flowers which grew around their farm,’ she remarked.
Then she was given a camera for the 21st birthday, and went off to spend several months on Norway taking
pictures of marine wildlife. (76) _________.
On her return, her development as a professional photographer was helped along by gaining degrees in
zoology and marine ecology, an academic background which also trained her to do careful studies of
whatever plants or animals she was planning to photograph. (77) _________ her images appear regularly
in many international journals and on TV worldwide.
Of course, wildlife being wildlife, animals like African elephants and emperor penguins don’t sit
around waiting for humans with cameras to arrive. Patience is needed. (78) _________ Yet there was the
ever-present threat of danger. ‘In October, some time after I was there, two scientists were attacked by a
male bear,’ says Heather. ‘We try never to get too close to a big male, and we also make sure we never get
between a mother and her cub.’
Asked what special qualities she brings to the job, Heather explains that she reacts very quickly to a
situation and maximises the opportunities that are there. (79) _________ This helps her to write more
detailed articles and books about the places she visits and to capture the most revealing images.

Page 5 of 6 pages
There aren’t many places in the world that Heather hasn’t already seen, but she told me that her ambitions
include working in the canopy of a rainforest and visiting Patagonia for the first time. (80) _________ No doubt
her spectacular South American photographs will soon be appearing in magazines throughout the world.
A. However, she quickly adds, ‘I tend to go back to the places that I like - It’s only the second or third
time that you get a feel for the place.’
B. Also, her scientific education has taught her the value of in-depth research before she goes anywhere.
C. Despite this, animals have been a lifelong passion for Heather.
D. Since gaining these skills, she has become one of the world’s most respected wildlife photographers.
E. So that’s rule one, and as Heather also remarks. ‘Everyone wants to be a wildlife photographer these
days but only a few will succeed.’
F. Recently, in a week of waiting to photograph wildlife in Alaska, the only moment of visual
excitement came when Heather and her team saw some large unidentified tracks in the mud.
G. Aside from being a prolific lecturer, Heather has also been recognized through numerous awards
and honours.
H. While these, she also learned a lot about films developing and processing, and wrote articles about
marine life which were accepted for magazines.

Digitally connected manufacturing, often (51) _______ “Industry 4.0”, encompasses a wide variety of
technologies, ranging (52) _______ 3D printing to robotics, new materials and production systems.
A move towards Industry 4.0 would benefit the private sector. Large, integrated manufacturers would
find in it a way to (53) _______ and shorten their supply chain, for example via flexible factories. A
more digitalized manufacturing would also open new market (54) _______ for SMEs providing such
specialized technologies as sensors, robotics, 3D printing or machine-to-machine communications.
For developed nations, Industry 4.0 - a term initially (55) _______ in Germany - could be a way to
regain manufacturing competitiveness. This is particularly relevant in the case of Western Europe,
which, unlike the US, does not currently enjoy reduced energy costs.
As for (56) _______ markets, Industry 4.0 could provide the much-needed route to moving up the value
chain, something that has become (57) _______ important to achieve in the teeth of rising labor costs.
For example, China’s new ten-year plan, issued last May and aptly (58) _______ “Made in China
2025”, targets key sectors such as robotics, information technology and energy (59) _______ turning the
country from a “manufacturing giant” into a “world manufacturing power”.
As promising as it is, much more work remains to be done to make Industry 4.0 a large-scale reality. On
the regulatory side, for instance, policymakers will have to ensure that data - the (60) _______ of
Industry 4.0 - can move freely and securely throughout the supply chain, including across borders. This
is an effort that is likely to take some time.

Part 2. For questions 61-70, read the text below and think of the word which best fits each gap.
Use only ONE word in each gap. (10pts)
Many ancient civilisations assumed the earth to be the centre of the universe, and it was not until
1610, with Galileo’s invention of the telescope, that it was possible to prove that, (61) ______ to
popular belief, the earth in fact revolved round the sun. Telescopes have improved greatly (62) ______
then, but the exponential (63) _____of cities in the last few decades has brought new difficulties in that
the glow from all the lights interferes (64) ______ the very dim signals from the stars. To (65) ______
extent, a solution has been found by building observatories in places where this interference can be cut
(66) ______ a minimum. Mauna Kea, the largest observatory in the world, was built thousands of
metres (67) ______ sea level, in the crater of a dormant volcano in Hawaii.
Although such strategically placed observatories were successful, leading astronomers realised
that, (68) _____the science was to progress, even more radical steps would have to be (69) ______, and
this (70)______to the building of the Hubole Space telescope in 1990. As Hubble operates in space, it
is completely unaffected by light or atmospheric pollution. It can detect galaxies that have never been
seen, and can transmit images of even the most distant stars at the very edge of the universe.
Part 3. For questions 71-75, read the text below and choose the best answer A, B, C, or D for each
of the questions. (5pts)
A ghostly animal creeps silently through a Florida swamp. It's a rare type of big cat known as a Florida
panther, one of only 80 to 100 such panthers left in the world. Scientists must work to save these
remaining panthers from extinction, but their secretive nature is making it difficult. They are attaching a
special transmitter to each Florida panther so they can follow their movements, range, and habits. The
technology these transmitters use is called satellite tracking.
The scientists are dedicated professionals, but they are not pioneers. Their colleagues before them have
attached tiny transmitters to many different kinds of wild animals, including birds, fish and big cats. So
the Florida scientists are using their methods. Firstly, they must trap and tranquillize the panther.
Then, the transmitter is attached to a harness and strapped to the panther's body. Each harness is custom-
designed and manually adjusted for panthers so it fits comfortably. Scientists don't want the transmitter
to interfere with the panther's natural habits. The point of tracking them is to find out as much as they
can about their natural habits. Once the tracking transmitter is in place, the information it records is sent
to an orbiting satellite. The satellite can see the transmitter that is attached to the panther, even when it
is out of sight of a biologist on the ground. The satellite collects information from the transmitter about
the panther's exact location. Once the information is received, it is transmitted back to Earth so it can be
recorded by the scientists. Scientists can use the information in many different ways. They can follow
the panthers on the ground and observe their behavior. Alternatively, they can use the information to
determine the panthers' ranges and to understand their social patterns. They can also track how
environmental changes like weather conditions affect their movements and health. All this information
can be used to provide ideal conditions for the endangered panthers. It can also be used to protect the
panthers from danger.
In the end, the panther silently slips away through the trees. Around its shoulders a transmitter is
sending signals via satellite to a dedicated biologist. The biologist is using the information the
transmitter provides to save the Florida Panthers from extinction. With the help of satellite tracking
these beautiful cats have a better chance of survival in the modern world.
71. What is the passage mainly about?
A. The use of a tracking device to protect Florida panthers
B. Different methods of tracking Florida panthers
C. The dedication of scientists to save Florida panthers
D. Florida panthers' secretive nature and habits
72. According to the passage, what information does the satellite collect from the transmitter?
A. The chance of panthers' survival
B. The panther's exact location
C. The biologists on the ground
D. The total number of panthers
73. Florida panthers are characterized as the animals that _______.
A. tend to remain hidden from people B. are abundant in number
C. live with the spirit of ghosts D. can be easily followed

vii Bingham publishes his theory
viii Bingham’s lack of enthusiasm
A
When the US explorer and academic Hiram Bingham arrived in South America in 1911, he was ready
for what was to be the greatest achievement of his life: the exploration of the remote hinterland to the
west of Cusco, the old capital of the Inca empire in the Andes mountains of Peru. His goal was to locate
the remains of a city called Vitcos, the last capital of the Inca civilisation. Cusco lies on a high plateau at
an elevation of more than 3,000 metres, and Bingham’s plan was to descend from this plateau along the
valley of the Urubamba river, which takes a circuitous route down to the Amazon and passes through an
area of dramatic canyons and mountain ranges.
B
When Bingham and his team set off down the Urubamba in late July, they had an advantage over
travellers who had preceded them: a track had recently been blasted down the valley canyon to enable
rubber to be brought up by mules from the jungle. Almost all previous travellers had left the river at
Ollantaytambo and taken a high pass across mountains to rejoin the river lower down, thereby cutting a
substantial corner, but also therefore never passing through the area around Machu Picchu.
C
On 24 July they were a few days into their descent of the valley. The day began slowly, with Bingham
trying to arrange sufficient mules for the next stage of the trek. His companions showed no interest in
accompanying him up the nearby hill to see some ruins that a local farmer, Melchor Arteaga, had told
them about the night before. The morning was dull and damp, and Bingham also seems to have been
less than keen on the prospect of climbing the hill. In his book Lost City of the Incas, he relates that he
made the ascent without having the least expectation that he would find anything at the top.
D
Bingham writes about the approach in vivid style in his book. First, as he climbs up the hill, he describes
the ever-present possibility of deadly snakes, “capable of making considerable springs when in pursuit
of their prey”; not that he sees any. Then there’s a sense of mounting discovery as he comes across great
sweeps of terraces, then a mausoleum, followed by monumental staircases and, finally, the grand
ceremonial buildings of Machu Picchu. “It seemed like an unbelievable dream … the sight held me
spellbound …” he wrote.
E
We should remember, however, that Lost City of the Incas is a work of hindsight, not written until 1948,
many years after his journey. His journal entries of the time reveal a much more gradual appreciation of
his achievement. He spent the afternoon at the ruins noting down the dimensions of some of the
buildings, then descended and rejoined his companions, to whom he seems to have said little about his
discovery. At this stage, Bingham didn’t realise the extent or the importance of the site, nor did he
realise what use he could make of the discovery.

Page 5 of 6 pages
F
However, soon after returning it occurred to him that he could make a name for himself from this
discovery. When he came to write the National Geographic magazine article that broke the story to the
world in April 1913, he knew he had to produce a big idea. He wondered whether it could have been the
birthplace of the very first Inca, Manco the Great, and whether it could also have been what chroniclers
described as “the last city of the Incas”. This term refers to Cilcabamba, the settlement where the Incas
had fled from Spanish invaders in the 1530s. Bingham made desperate attempts to prove this belief for
nearly 40 years. Sadly, his vision of the site as both the beginning and end of the Inca civilisation, while
a magnificent one, is inaccurate. We now know that Vilcabamba actually lies 65 kilometres away in the
depths of the jungle.
