1. INTRODUCTION
In the present age of information Technology, use of Internet is becoming quite popular for
accessing information on any topic of your interest. It also provides tremendous opportunities to
students, researchers and professionals for getting information on matters related to academic and
professional topics and lot more. In the present world, most of the people who have computers
around themselves use Internet to access information from the World Wide Web, exchange
messages & documents and e-services

1.1 What is the Internet?

Internet is a global network that connects billions of computers across the world with each
other and to the World Wide Web. It uses standard internet protocol suite (TCP/IP) to
connect billions of computer users worldwide. It is set up by using cables such as optical
fibers and other wireless and networking technologies. At present, internet is the fastest mean
of sending or exchanging information and data between computers across the world.

1.2 Uses of Internet

Internet has been the most useful technology of the modern times which helps us not only in
our daily lives, but also our personal and professional lives developments. The internet helps
us achieve this in several different ways.
 E-mail: Email is now an essential communication tools in business. With e-mail you
can send and receive instant electronic messages, which works like writing letters.
 24 hours a day - 7 days a week: Internet is available,24x7 days for usage.
 Online Chat: You can access many ‘chat rooms’ on the web that can be used to meet
new people, make new friends,as well as to stay in touch with old friends. You can
chat in MSN and yahoo websites.

 Services: Many services are provided on the internet like net banking, job searching,
purchasing tickets, hotel reservations, guidance services on array of topics engulfing
 every aspect of life.
 Communities: Communities of all types have sprung up on the internet. Its a great
way to meet up with people of similar interest and discuss common issues.

 E-commerce: Along with getting information on the Internet, you can also shop
online. There are many online stores and sites that can be used to look for products as

3

well as buy them using your credit card. You do not need to leave your house and can
do all your shopping from the convenience of your home. It has got a real amazing
and wide range of products from household needs, electronics to entertainment.

 Entertainment: Internet provides facility to access wide range of Audio/Video songs,

plays films. Many of which can be downloaded. One such popular website is
YouTube.

 Software Downloads: You can freely download innumerable, softwares like utilities,
games, music, videos, movies, etc from the Internet.

1.3 Connection Concept:

Internet is called a network as it creates a network by connecting computers and servers across the
world using routers, switches and telephone lines, and other communication devices and channels. So,
it can be considered a global network of physical cables such as copper telephone wires, fiber optic
cables, tv cables, etc. Furthermore, even wireless connections like 3G, 4G, or Wi-Fi make use of these
cables to access the Internet.

The internet works with the help of clients and servers. A device such as a laptop, which is connected
to the internet is called a client, not a server as it is not directly connected to the internet. However, it
is indirectly connected to the internet through an Internet Service Provider (ISP) and is identified by
an IP address,

A server is a large computer that stores websites. It also has an IP address. A place where a large
number of servers are stored is called a data center. The server accepts requests send by the client
through a browser over a network (internet) and responds accordingly.

1.4 Connecting to Internet:

 Dial-Up – In such connections, users are required to link their phone line to a
computer to access the Internet. Under this connection, the user cannot make or
receive phone calls through tier home phone service

 Broadband – Provided either through cable or phone companies, Broadband is a

high-speed internet connection which is widely used today

4
INTERNET AND ITS APPLICATIONS-2024

 Wireless Connection – Wi-fi and Mobile service providers fall under this category.
Internet connectivity is made via radio waves and the Internet can be connected
anywhere, irrespective of the location. Given below are a few examples of wireless
connection:
o Wi-fi – Wireless Fidelity or wi-fi allows high-speed internet connectivity
without the use of wires
o Mobile Phones – All smartphones are now equipped with an option for
Internet connectivity which can be availed using Internet vouchers and packs.
No external connection or wire is required for these
o Satellite – Where broadband connections are unavailable, satellites are used
for wireless Internet connectivity
o Integrated Services Digital Network – ISDN allows users to sent audio or
video data using telephone lines

INTERNET AND ITS APPLICATIONS-2024

1.6 High Speed Connection

 Broadband refers to various high-capacity transmission technologies that transmit

data, voice, and video across long distances and at high speeds. Common mediums of
transmission include coaxial cables, fiber optic cables, and radio waves.
 Broadband is always connected and removes the need for dial-up. Its importance is
far-reaching; it allows for high-quality and quick access to information,
teleconferencing, data transmission, and more in various capacities, including
healthcare, education, and technological development.

Types:

Digital subscriber line (DSL)

DSL transmits data over copper wires that already exist in homes and businesses from
telephone lines. The speed of DSL broadband ranges from several hundred Kbps to millions
of bits per second (Mbps)

There are two primary types of DSL technologies: asymmetrical digital subscriber line
(ADSL) and symmetrical digital subscriber line (SDSL). ADSL is asymmetrical because its
users receive a lot of data but do not send a lot of data. Home residences—where individuals
use the Internet primarily for surfing, watching movies, and playing video games—fall under
ADSL. Because of the user profile, ADSL has faster speeds for the incoming stream than for
the outgoing stream.5

Cable modem

Cable modems allow for data transmission on the same coaxial cables used by cable
companies to send pictures and sound to your television. Cable modems are external devices
that provide speeds of 1.5 Mbps or more. Speeds vary depending on the option selected from
your cable provider, the cable modem, and traffic.

6
INTERNET AND ITS APPLICATIONS-2024

ISDN

ISDN stands for Integrated services digital network. It is an international Communications standard
for sending voice, video, and data over digital telephone lines or normal telephone wires.ISDN
supports data transfer rates of 64 Kbps and its multiples. Most ISDN lines offered by telephone
companies give two lines at once, called Bearer channels or B- channels.

1.7 INTRANET:

An intranet is a private network contained within an enterprise that is used to securely share
company information and computing resources among employees. An intranet can also be
used for working in groups and teleconferences.

Intranets encourage communication within an organization. They let employees easily access
important information, links, applications, forms and databases of company records. A
database that includes all the usernames of employees who have access rights to the network
is often used to maintain intranet security.

Intranets play a crucial role in organizations by providing a centralized platform for seamless
internal communication, collaboration, and knowledge sharing, thereby significantly
enhancing productivity, streamlining operations, and fostering a culture of innovation and
efficiency.

Here are the reasons that increase its importance:

 Improves internal communication

 Connects employees across locations and time zones

 Boosts recognition and reward

 Simplifies employee onboarding

 Provides organizational clarity

 Encourages knowledge sharing

UNIT -3

Online chatting:

Online chat may refer to any kind of communication over the Internet that offers a real-time
transmission of text messages from sender to receiver. Chat messages are generally short in
order to enable other participants to respond quickly. Thereby, a feeling similar to a spoken
conversation is created, which distinguishes chatting from other text-based online
communication forms such as Internet forums and email. Online chat may address point-to-
point communications as well as multicast communications from one sender to many
receivers and voice and video chat, or may be a feature of a web conferencing service.

Online chat in a less stringent definition may be primarily any direct text-based or video-
based (webcams), one-on-one chat or one-to-many group chat (formally also known as
synchronous conferencing), using tools such as instant messengers, Internet Relay Chat
(IRC), talkers and possibly MUDs or other online games. The expression online chat comes
from the word chat which means "informal conversation". Online chat includes web-based
applications that allow communication – often directly addressed, but anonymous between
users in a multi-user environment.

Online Conferencing
An Online Conferencing service is an audio web video conferencing solution that combines all
services into one online conference solution. Online meeting services allow you to use internet access
from your computer for a complete online conference solution. Online Conferencing can be done as
scheduled, or reservationless, with operator assisted conferencing available. Online teleconferencing
participants are bridged together seamlessly with the online collaboration tools providing the visual
participation.
Many online conference providers offer VOIP web conferencing which allows use of the Internet for
the teleconference portion using VOIP conferencing technology. Online Web Conferencing is used by
businesses to remotely present and share with online collaboration on different applications including
documents, web sites, data files, video, emails, and reduce the time and cost of business travel for
meetings. Additional online conference features include the option to record online web conferences,
annotate, participant Q&A, chat, polling, and video conferencing with a web cam. Online

Conferencing service is also known as an Online Meeting Service, Online Collaboration

Tool, Online Web Conference, eMeeting, Internet Conferencing, or Webmeeting.

Emailing List

A mailing list is a collection of email addresses to which you send information and updates.
Such a list consists of a specific group, for example, customers who purchase a particular
subscription from you—or club members from a specific year. You can communicate
effectively and purposefully by creating one or more mailing lists.

How does a mailing list work?

A mailing list works as follows. Your website has a registration form where interested
visitors can sign up. Once signed up, one or more lists of email addresses are created. It
could, for example, be a list of people interested in updates on women’s clothing and a list of
children’s clothing. You can email one group and not send it to the other and vice versa,
making it possible to send targeted emails.

Types of mailing lists

You can create different mailing lists depending on your goal and who you want to reach.
Below are 6 examples:

1. Newsletter
A newsletter lets you inform people or give updates about a product, service or
company.
2. Marketing mail
In a marketing email, you can include offers, coupon codes, and discounts.
3. Service message
In a service message, you inform people about a product or service, for example,
when maintenance is needed.
4. Member letter
In a membership letter, you can inform about activities, events and the association
itself.

14

Video conferencing
Video conferencing is live, visual connection between two or more remote parties over the
internet that simulates a face-to-face meeting. Video conferencing is important because it
joins people who would not normally be able to form a face-to-face connection.

At its simplest, video conferencing provides transmission of static images and text between
two locations. At its most sophisticated, it provides transmission of full-motion video images
and high-quality audio between multiple locations.

In the business world, desktop video conferencing is a core component of unified

communications platforms that also include calling and messaging capabilities. Standalone
on-premises and cloud-based video conferencing platforms are also available from numerous
vendors who support desktop- and room-based video, as well as the ability to embed video
conferencing into business applications, such as Telehealth, customer service and distance
learning.

Components of video conferencing systems

The components of a video conferencing system include the following:

 A network for data transfer, such as wired/wireless local area network, wide area
network, cellular wireless and residential broadband.
 Two or more video cameras or webcams that provide video input.
 Two or more microphones -- either an external microphone or one built into the
accessing device.
 A computer screen, monitor, TV or projector that can broadcast video output.
 Headphones, laptop speakers or external speakers that can be used for audio output.
 Codecs, which can be hardware- or software-based, to reduce bandwidth by
compressing and decompressing AV data. They typically include acoustic echo
cancellation capabilities, which reduce audio delays to support real-time
communication. Codecs may also include features like noise cancellation and acoustic
fencing to minimize background noise during conferences.

INTERNET AND ITS APPLICATIONS-2024

UNIT-4

WWW (World Wide Web)

The World Wide Web is abbreviated as WWW and is commonly known as the web. The
WWW was initiated by CERN (European library for Nuclear Research) in 1989.

WWW can be defined as the collection of different websites around the world, containing
different information shared via local servers(or computers).

Working of WWW:
The World Wide Web is based on several different technologies: Web browsers, Hypertext
Markup Language (HTML) and Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP).

A Web browser is used to access web pages. Web browsers can be defined as programs
which display text, data, pictures, animation and video on the Internet. Hyperlinked resources
on the World Wide Web can be accessed using software interfaces provided by Web
browsers. Initially, Web browsers were used only for surfing the Web but now they have
become more universal. Web browsers can be used for several tasks including conducting
searches, mailing, transferring files, and much more. Some of the commonly used browsers
are Internet Explorer, Opera Mini, and Google Chrome.

Features of WWW:

 HyperText Information System

 Cross-Platform
 Distributed
 Open Standards and Open Source
 Uses Web Browsers to provide a single interface for many services
 Dynamic, Interactive and Evolving.
 “Web 2.0”

17
INTERNET AND ITS APPLICATIONS-2024

Components of the Web: There are 3 components of the web:

Uniform Resource Locator (URL): serves as a system for resources on the web.

1. HyperText Transfer Protocol (HTTP): specifies communication of browser and

server.
2. Hyper Text Markup Language (HTML): defines the structure, organisation and
content of a webpage.

CLIENT SERVER:

The client-server model describes how a server gives one or more clients access to resources

and services. Mail servers, web servers, and file servers are examples of servers. Client

devices, including desktops, laptops, tablets, and mobile devices, have access to the resources

on each of these servers. Clients and servers often have a one-to-many connection, which

means that a single server can supply resources to several clients at the same time.

When a client requests a connection with a server, the server has the option of accepting or

rejecting the request. If the connection is accepted, the server builds and maintains a protocol-

specific connection with the client. To send a message, for instance, an email client may

demand an SMTP connection to a mail server. The mail server's SMTP program will then

request authentication information, such as the email address and password. The server will

deliver the email to the designated recipient if the credentials match an account on the mail

server.

Types of Client Server Architecture :

There are numerous client-server architectures, each with their own benefits and drawbacks.
The following are some of the most prevalent client-server architectures:

18
INTERNET AND ITS APPLICATIONS-2024

1. One-Tier Architecture: One-Tier architecture is a basic program that runs on a

single computer without network access. User requests do not control any network
protocols; consequently, the code is simple and the network is alleviated of excess
traffic.
2. Two-Tier Architecture: Two-Tier architecture consists of a client, a server, and a
protocol connecting the two tiers. The code for the Graphical User Interface resides
on the client host, while the logic for the domain resides on the server host. The
client-server graphical user interface is written in high-level programming languages
such as C++ and Java.

Consider the client as a consumer who visits a fast-food restaurant and places an order
directly with the cook (server) to better grasp this concept. The chef then prepares and
serves the customer the cuisine. However, the process may become less effective if
there are a large number of customers or if the consumer desires a more intricate
meal.

3. Three-Tier Architecture: The presentation tier is the User Interface layer, the
application tier is the service layer that conducts detailed processing, and the data tier
is a database server that stores data.

To better comprehend this architecture, think of the client as a restaurant patron who
places an order with the waiter (application server). The waiter then contacts the
culinary personnel (database server) to obtain the necessary ingredients and prepare
the meals. This will increase the efficiency of the restaurant's service system, as
additional waiters and culinary employees will be able to serve more customers.

Microsoft MySQL Server is a well-known example of a three-tier architecture, with

three main components: a protocol layer, a relational engine, and a storage engine. A
SQL Server client must be deployed on all client devices that communicate directly to
SQL Server.

4. N-Tier Architecture: N-Tier architecture divides an application into logical layers,

which segregate responsibilities and manage dependencies, and physical tiers, which
run on separate machines, enhance scalability, and increase network latency. N-Tier
architecture may be closed-layer, wherein a layer can only communicate with the

19
INTERNET AND ITS APPLICATIONS-2024

layer below it, or open-layer, wherein a layer can communicate with all layers below
it.

URL Uniform Resource Locator

URL stands for Uniform Resource Locator. A URL is nothing more than the address of a given unique
resource on the Web. In theory, each valid URL points to a unique resource. Such resources can be
an HTML page, a CSS document, an image, etc

Basics: anatomy of a URL

Here are some examples of URLs:

https://developer.mozilla.org
https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Learn/
https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/search?q=URL

o The first part of the URL is the scheme, which indicates the protocol that the
browser must use to request the resource (a protocol is a set method for
exchanging or transferring data around a computer network).

 The domain indicates which Web server is being requested. Usually this is a domain
name, but an IP address may also be used (but this is rare as it is much less
convenient).
 The port indicates the technical "gate" used to access the resources on the web server.
It is usually omitted if the web server uses the standard ports of the HTTP protocol
(80 for HTTP and 443 for HTTPS) to grant access to its resources.
 a path like this represented a physical file location on the Web server

INTERNET AND ITS APPLICATIONS-2024

Web Browser

The web browser is an application software to explore www (World Wide Web). It provides
an interface between the server and the client and it requests to the server for web documents
and services. It works as a compiler to render HTML which is used to design a webpage.

A web browser helps us find information anywhere on the internet. It is installed on the client
computer and requests information from the web server such a type of working model is
called a client-server model

Some Popular Web Browsers

1. Google Chrome:

Developed by Google, Chrome is one of the most widely-used web browsers in the world,
known for its speed and simplicity.

2. Mozilla Firefox:

Developed by the Mozilla Foundation, Firefox is an open-source browser that is known for
its privacy features and customization options.

3. Apple Safari:

Developed by Apple, Safari is the default browser on Mac and iOS devices and is known for
its speed and integration with other Apple products.

4. Microsoft Edge:

Developed by Microsoft, Edge is the default browser on Windows 10 and is known for its
integration with other Microsoft products and services.

6. Opera:

Developed by Opera Software, Opera is a web browser that is known for its speed and built-
in VPN feature.

Microsoft Internet Explorer commonly abbreviated as IE or MSIE) is a retired series of

graphical web browsers developed by Microsoft that were used in the Windows line of
operating systems. While IE has been discontinued on most Windows editions, it remains
supported on certain editions of Windows.

21
INTERNET AND ITS APPLICATIONS-2024

Internet Explorer has been designed to view a broad range of web pages and provide certain
features within the operating system, including Microsoft Update. During the height of the
browser wars, Internet Explorer superseded Netscape only when it caught up technologically
to support the progressive features of the time.

include information related to your query.
5. Repeat above steps (type different keywords or phrases) if necessary.

23
INTERNET AND ITS APPLICATIONS-2024

.Web Directory

A web directory organizes websites by topic and is usually managed by humans rather than
software. A search engine searches sites organized into a series of categories and menus.
These collections of links are generally much smaller than search engine databases, as the
sites are viewed by human eyes rather than spiders.

There are two ways for sites to be listed in a web directory, either when the website owner
submits the site by hand, or when the directory editor comes across that site and decides to
list it.

Types of Web Directories

We can classify web directories in different ways according to their typology:

 According to the cost: si these allow us to include the link to our website without any
cost, we will talk about free directories,if on the contrary it is necessary to pay to
register our website we will refer to paid directories.
 According to the correspondence: there are numerous directories that are free, but
in exchange for including our website they demand in return a link to it, which is
known as reciprocal directories, normally these are more relevant than free non-
reciprocaldirectories.
 According to the geographical area: if it is a web directory that includes only web
pages from a certain geographical region, we are talking about a local directory,if it
does not have any type of geographical limitation it is a global directory.
 According to the specialization: if it is a directory that is not specialized in any
specific topic, it is called a general directory, when if it is it is a thematic directory.
Thematic directories are as varied as disciplines exist and we can find directories of
sports, news, health, technology, shopping, etc
