Friendships need the same attention as other relationships. If they are to continue, These relationships can be delightfully non-judgemental, supportive, understanding and fun. Sometimes a friendship can bring out the positive side that you never show in any other relationship. This may be because the pressure of playing a role (daughter, partner or child) isremoved. With a friend you are to be yourselffand froa to change, Of course, you are free to do this in all other relationships as well, but in friendships you get to have lats of rehearsals and discussion about changes as you experience them. It is an unconditional experience where you receive as much as you give. You can explain yourself to a friend openly without the fear of hurting a family member. How do fiiendships ‘grow ? The answer is simple. By revealing yourself, being attentive: remembering what is most showing ‘empathy; seeing the world through the eyes of your friend, you will understand the value of friendship. The first working steam powered vehicle was designed and most likely built by Ferdinand Verbies, a Flemish member of a Jesuit mission in China around 1672. It was a 65 cm long seale-model toy for the Chinese Emperor, that was unable to carry a driver or a passenger. It is not known if Verbiest’s model was ever built, Nicolas-Joseph Cugnot is widely credited with building the first full-scale, self-propelled mechanical vehicle or automobile in about 1769, he also created a steam-powered tricycle. He constructed {wo steam tractors for the French Army, one of which is preserved in the French National Conservatory of Arts and Crafts, His inventions were however handicapped by problems of water supply and maintaining steam pressure. In 1801, Richard Trevithiek builtand demonstrated his Puffing Devil road locomotive, believed by many to be the first demonstration of a steam-powered road vehicle. It ‘was unable to maintain sufficient steam pressure for Jong periods. Sentiment against steam-powered road vehicles led to the Locomotive Acts of 1865. The likelihood of at least 600,000 deaths being caused annually in India by fine particulate matter pollution in the air is cause for worry, even if the data released by the World Health Organisation are only a ‘modelled estimate, The conclusion that so many deaths, could be attributed to particulate matter 2.5 micrometres or less in size is, of course, caveated, since comprehensive measurement of PM2. 5 is not yet being done and the linkages between pollution, disease and deaths need further study. What is not in doubt is that residents in many urban areas are forced to breathe unhealthy levels of particulates, and the smallest of these - PM10 and less - can penetrate and get lodged deep in the lungs. The WHO Global Burden of Disease study has been working to estimate pollution-linked health impacts, such as stroke and ischaemic heart disease, acute lower respiratory infection and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Data on fine particulates in India show that in, several locations the pollutants come from burning of biomass, such as coal, fel wood, farm litter and cow dung cakes. In highly built-up areas, construction debris, road dust and vehicular exhaust add tothe problem. The Prime Minister launched an Air Quality Index last year aimed at improving pollution control. The new data, which the WHO says provide the best evidence available on the terrible toll taken by particulates, should lead to intensified action. A ams neglected aspect of urban air pollution control is the virtual discarding ofthe Waste Management Rules, notified to sustainably manage debris that is dumped in the cities, creating severe particulate pollution The Environment Ministry has highlighted the role that debris ean play as a resource. Municipal and ‘government contracts are, under the rules, required to Utilise up to 20 per cent materials made from construction and demolition waste, and local authorities must place containers to hold debris. This ‘must be implemented without delay. Providing cleaner fuels and scientifically designed cookstoves to those who haveno option bul to burn biomass, would havea big impaet on reducing particulate matter in the northern and eastern States, which are the worst-hit during winter, when biomass is also used for heating. Greening the cities could be made a mission, involving civil society, with a focus on landscaping open spaces and paving all public areas to reduce dust. These measures can result in lower PM land PM2.5 levels. Comprehensive measurement of these particulates is currently absent in many cities, a lacuna that needs to be addressed. 6.
