5.1 Objectives
After completion of this lab, the students will be able to:
 Use Helix/Spiral curve to create spiral objects i.e., springs.
 Apply Swept Boss/Base feature in SolidWorks.
 Create standard and customized holes using Hole Wizard feature.

5.2 Swept Boss/Base

The Swept Boss/Base tool is used to create a solid volume by moving a sketch along the selected
path. The prerequisite for creating a 3D swept model is to first sketch the shapes on the different
perpendicular planes and create a Boss or a Cut feature. Typical simple sweeps are used to create
wire, tubing, or hose. Sweeps that are more complex are used for creating objects such as bottles,
involutes, springs, and corkscrews.
The main criterion for selecting a sweep to create a feature is that you must be able to identify a
cross section and a path. The profile (cross section) can change along the path, but the overall
shape must remain the same.
Sweep PropertyManager also includes an option for Circular Profile to create simple sweeps
with a circle driven along a path by its center, maintaining a constant diameter (such as wire,
hose, pipe, and so on). To use this function, specify the diameter of the circle in the
PropertyManager.

5.3 Working with Helix Curve Feature

The Helix curve types are created from a sketch circle. The
circle represents the starting plane, center, and diameter of
the helix. Figure 5.1 shows the PropertyManager of the
Constant Pitch and Variable Pitch helix types.
Helical curve types can be created by specifying some
combination of total height, pitch, and the number of
revolutions. The term pitch refers to the straight-line
distance along the axis between the rings of the helix.

5.4 Hole Wizard

The Hole Wizard tool is used to create holes that comply
with the real machining tools. SolidWorks has library of
standard holes and slots that can be created in the solid
model. You can use this standard library, or you can create
a customized hole/slot by using the tool. The procedure to
use this tool is given below:
 Click on the Hole Wizard tool from the Hole
Wizard drop-down in the Ribbon. The Hole
Specification PropertyManager will display.

PropertyManager
 Select the type of hole i.e., counterbored, countersunk, drilled hole, tapped hole, pipe tap,
or legacy.
 Set the standard to be used, such as ANSI inch, ANSI matric or ISO.
 Select the type of screw i.e., socket head cap screw or a hex head screw etc.
 Select the size and fit of the screw.
 Set the End Condition for the holes.
 Switch to Positions tab to place sketch points at the center of each hole you want to
create.
 Click OK to accept the type, size, and placement of the hole.

5.5 Lab Tasks
5.5.1 Lab Task 1

Make a constant pitch helical spring as shown in Figure 5.3 having following features:
[10 Marks]
 Diameter: 40mm
 Pitch: 15mm
 No. of Revolutions: 8
 Start Angle: 90 degrees
 Thickness: 5mm

5.5.3 Lab Task 3

Make the object shown in Figure 5.5 using Swept Boss/Base feature in SolidWorks.

5.5.4 Lab Task 4

Make orthographic drawings of the objects made in Task 1 to 3. [10 marks]

Task1
Make a circle first of 40mm diameter.

By features bar select curves and then select helix and spiral. Set the pitch to Pitch: 15mm. No.
of Revolutions: 8. Start Angle: 90 degrees. Thickness: 5mm

By selecting the right plane of the view and creating the circle in the end point and then select
swept Boss/Base feature.
After rotation the final image as follows.
Task 2
By making a polygon and selecting the extruded Boss/Base feature.

Making a circle within the polygon and extrude it by extruded Boss/Base feature.

select helix and spiral and set its height 50mm and pitch 1.7mm.

By making acircle and cut it by extrude cut in the polygon

By making the edges by fillet and extruded cut, the final image is as follows.
Task 3
By making circle of radius 520 and used trim entities.

By making it in the right plane, and drawing another circleon it of 290 radius

Then we used swept Boss/Base we sketch the profile.

Making a centre rectangle of 360mm sides. Boss extrude it by 50mm.

By making the edges of20mm in fillet feature. And making the same rectangle on the other end.

By selecting fillet and chamfer set the distance to 10mm.By hole Wizard set the size M30

Set the hole positions.
