FIRE SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS 01/01/2020

PROCEDURES AND RULES FOR ALL PERSONNEL

Familiarize yourself with the location of fire alarm pull stations, stairways and emergency exits. You
should plan for a primary and an alternate means of emergency escape and become familiar with fire
fighting equipment in or near your work areas. Read the instructions on the fire extinguishers and be
certain you know which type is in your area. The Primary concern in case of a fire is your safety and
the safety of others in the building.

IN CASE OF FIRE
1. Stay calm and don’t panic.
2. If possible, extinguish the fire using available fire fighting equipment.
3. Sound the building fire alarm immediately (continuous ring of the bell). If the alarm fails to
operate, warn other occupants by knocking on doors and shouting warnings.
4. Call 112 / 101 from a safely located telephone. Give as much information as possible. Do not
assume that someone else has already notified the Fire Department.
5. Ensure that co-workers are evacuated from the area.
6. Before opening any door, feel the surface with the back of your hand. If it is hot, do not open the
door & do the following: (If it is not hot, go to step 7)
• Do not open the windows, unless you are having trouble breathing.
• Seal cracks around the door with towels, tape, clothing or similar items to keep out the
smoke.
• If you are trapped, hang a sheet, jacket, shirt or other object out the window that will attract
attention.
• Shout for help. Remain calm until firefighters reach you from the hallway or window. Their
first duty upon arriving at a fire is to search for persons trapped in the burning building.
• If smoke is present, keep low to the floor. Take short breaths to avoid inhaling any more
smoke than necessary.
7. If you are able to leave the room, do so immediately and:
• Close all doors behind you as you exit. This will retard the spread of smoke and reduce
damage.
• Go to the nearest exit or stairway. DO NOT USE AN ELEVATOR.
• If smoke, heat or fire blocks your exit, go to an alternate exit.
• If all exits from a floor are blocked go back to your area and follow the procedures described
above in 6.
8. Leave the building immediately. When the firefighters arrive, direct them to the fire.
9. After exiting the building, do not congregate at or around the building exits.
10. DO NOT REENTER THE BUILDING FOR ANY REASON UNTIL THE FIRE DEPARTMENT HAS
DECLARED IT SAFE.

FIRE DRILLS
Fire Drills will be conducted periodically. They are conducted regularly to familiarize all personnel with
the sound of the fire alarm (continuous ring of the bell), emergency exits, and procedures for
evacuating the building. Department in charges and management are responsible for ensuring that all
personnel are familiar with fire drill procedures.

Doors & Exit Paths

All room doors should always be kept shut. Fire doors shall be kept closed at all times.
Do not block exits. Arrange all furniture to provide a clear, unobstructed path to all exit doors. All exit
doors, interior doors, exit-ways and other means of egress shall be kept clean of all materials

Fire Equipment
Tampering with fire alarm equipment and/or extinguisher devices or using them for other purposes is
prohibited.

Fire Escapes
A fire escape is for emergency exiting of the building only. Storage of any kind on a fire escape is
prohibited.
