2014 BMW E46 Facelift Coupe Power Fold Mirror Retrofit

1. On the inside of the door, remov e the plastic triangle cov ering the rear of the mirror base plate. You should be able to
see two bolts and the mirror cable running into the door.

2. Pulling the top corner of the door card away f rom the door should pop out the top most retaining clip and if y ou hav e
small enough hands, y ou might just be lucky enough to be able to reach the connector clips and undo them. If not,
then y ou will need to remov e more of the door card (other bolts in the handle and f urther retaining clips need to be
popped out).

3. Undo the two retaining bolts holding the mirror to the door and the mirror should come f ree easily.

4. Follow the process in rev erse to install the new mirror

Hardware – M irror Glass

1. Remov e the mirror glass f rom the old mirrors by tilting the glass all the way to one side and pushing gently but
f irmly till the retaining clip on the opposite side releases. Work y our way around the edge until all f our are f ree. Be
caref ul – replacement heated mirror glass f rom BMW is around £75 each!

2. Disconnect the two heating element cables on the rear of the glass

3. Reinstall the glass in the new mirror unit by pushing it ev enly onto the clips behind – don’t f orget to reconnect the

Hardware – M irror Cov e r

1. Once the mirror glass has been remov ed, y ou should be able to see f our retaining clips that hold the plastic cov er
that shields the rear of the mirror. Depress these clips to release the cov er.

2. Reinstall the cov ers on the new mirrors. Be caref ul with these too – replacements are around £35 each f rom BMW
and they come unpainted so y ou would need to hav e them spray ed to match y our car’s paint.

Hardware – M irror Switch

1. The easiest way to remov e the mirror switch is to pop of f the adjustment toggle and use a pair of pliers or grips to
pull upwards gently. The switch should slide out af ter a bit of initial resistance.

2. The single connecting cable plugs directly into the new purple switch and it slots into the same hole.

At this point, the mirror adjustment controls should work but the power f old will not. The car needs to be coded to f irst
inf orm the ECU that power f old mirrors are installed and secondly that the f eature should be enabled.

2014 Changing BMW Vehicle Order Using NCS Expert

When retrof itting options that were not f actory installed, it is sometimes necessary to program the car to enable them.

The car stores a list of options that were installed at the f actory in one or more of it’s ECUs. This is known as the Vehicle
CATEGORY
Cars Order (VO) and options such as electric auto f olding wing mirrors/side mirrors are part of an option pack that needs to be
Guides added to this list if they are to work correctly (or at all) af ter a retrof it.

The f ollowing is the process I used to add option $313 (Fold In Outside Mirror Package) to the VO on my Facelif t (2003

on) E46 Coupe. It inv olv es the use of a BMW f actory tool called NCS Expert and a lot of the sof tware is unf ortunately in

akmb German so is not particularly straightf orward to use f or non-German speakers! The process is essentially the same f or
bmcables most E46s but bear in mind that there may be some dif f erences in the modules that are av ailable in y our car.

4. Load an ‘Expert Mode’ Prof ile. I used ‘Expertenmodus‘

If y ou don’t use an ‘expert’ prof ile, y ou will be prev ented f rom processing the ECU and perf orming write operations.

5. Press the CHASSIS (F2) button

6. Select y our Vehicle Ty pe

I obv iously selected E46. You will the be prompted to select a module to read f rom. This step will dif f er slightly f rom
car to car. In my car I selected the AKMB module on the list to read back and I was able to see the VIN, VO/FA and
some other inf ormation appear. If this is successf ul, continue. If not, try another module.

7. Press the Back button

I got an error at this point about a missing f ile (FSW_PSW.MAN). If y ou get this error, create an empty f ile in the
NCSEXPER\WORK f older with this name and f ile extension and repeat the abov e steps.

8. Press the VIN/ZCS/FA (F1) button

9. Press the Enter FA (F2) button

10. Select the Chassis f rom the box that pops up (again, I selected E46 here)

11. A box with y our VIN will pop up. Click OK

12. A box to add options to y our VO will appear.

VO Selection List

Enter the option code (I entered $313 f or my f olding mirrors) in the attribute f ield and click Add, f ollowed by OK. You
can delete options by selecting one f rom the list and pressing the delete key on y our key board.

13. Press the Back button

14. Press the Process ECU (F4) button

Note that this button will not appear if y ou aren’t using an ‘Expert’ prof ile.

15. A box will appear that asks y ou to select an ECU module to process.
Select the same ECU module that y ou read initially.

16. Press the Change Job (F2) button

17. Select FA_WRITE f rom the list

18. Press the Execute Job (F3) button

19. Wait until the message on screen changes to Job Ended. The new VO has now been coded to the specif ied module.

Coding VO Complete

20. The car operates a redundant sy stem f or the VO. You need to repeat the process described abov e to add the option
to the second ECU module that contains the VO list so they both match. In my case it was the AEWS module.

Once the option has been added to the VO, other coding f unctions can be adjusted to change f unctionality of the newly
installed item.
