DRAWING PROGRAM
WATTS ATELIER Figure Drawing Fundamentals: Mass
-OF THE ARTS

Each section of this class builds on the one before it. Therefore, each drawing in this
section should start first as a gesture, then have structural information layered on top of it,
and then lastly, tonal/value information can be added. It is important that this process is
followed every time. Eventually, as you become more and more advanced, you will begin
to skip steps and leave out information that your brain has learned to account for without
actually drawing it in. But the only way to get to that point is to slow down and follow all
the steps on each of the drawings you do for the first few years.

Part 1
1. Carefully watch all of the videos for this section. Rewatch them as many times as is
necessary. Apply any and all learning techniques that work for you.

2. The first exercise with the value chart, cylinder, and arm, is extremely important. Watch
this part of this video as many times as is necessary to fully understand it.

3. Follow along with the video and do your best to bring up the value chart, cylinder, and
arm simultaneously just as is done in the video. This will help with understanding how
these three things relate to one another, and, how they relate to one another is super
important!

4. It is okay to draw directly from my drawings on this part. The photo reference for the
arm is included but doesn't have to be used.

Part 2
1. After completing the work above, you can move on to the second part of the
assignment.
2. Carefully watch all of the videos for this section. Rewatch them as many times as is
necessary. Apply any and all learning techniques that work for you.
3. Pay close attention to the order of operations. This is critical. Each step must be done
correctly as it is the foundation for the step that comes next. These drawings will be
brought up to the 2-value stage.

4. After watching the videos, locate the reference photos used for each drawing.
5. Make sure that your final attempts are drawn from the photos of the models and not the
photos of my drawings. This will allow us to assess how well you understand this
information on your own.

When mapping a more complex form like this,

always remember that variation of edges is key.
Adding variety to both edges and shapes is a great
way to add interest and complexity to a drawing.
Just know that complexity should be found within
the contours of a form while the contour itself
should be more simplified.
