Micro-Project Proposal
Title: Oxygen Absorption Mechanism.
1.0 Aim/Benefits of the Micro-Project: -
To understand the Oxygen Absorption Mechanism To study the
concentration cell corrosion and aeration corrosion.
Project is about oxygen absorption mechanism in chemistry. The information about the topic is
given below.
1. This type of corrosion is due to electrochemical attack on the metal surface, exposed to an
electrolyte of varying concentrations or of varying aeration.
2. The most common type of concentration cell corrosion is differential aeration corrosion.
3. It occurs when one part of metal is exposed to a different air concentration from the other part.
This causes a difference in potential between differently aerated areas.
4. It has been found experimentally that "poor oxygenated parts are anodic". Consequently, a
differential aeration of metal causes a flow of current, called the differential current.
5. Differential aeration accounts for the corrosion of metals, partially immersed in a solution, the
waterline just below.
6. Iron corrodes under drops of water (or salt solution) in the presence of atmospheric oxygen
(oxygen absorption mechanism) is a common example of concentration cell corrosion.

Micro-Project Report
The surface of iron is usually coated with a thin film of iron oxide. However, iron oxide film develops
some cracks, anodic areas are created on the surface, while the coated metal parts act as cathode.
It follows that the anodic areas are small surface parts, while nearly rest of the surface of the metal
forms large cathode
At the anodic areas of the metal, iron dissolves as Fe++ ion with the liberation of electrons.
FeFe+++ 2e-
The liberated electrons flow from anodic to cathodic areas, through iron metal, where electrons are
intercepted by the dissolved oxygen. These in presence of water drop form OH- ions as follows:
The Fe++ ions at anode and OH- ions at cathode diffuse and when they meet, ferrous hydroxide is
precipitated.
(i) If enough oxygen is present, ferrous hydroxide is easily oxidized to ferric hydroxide.
4Fe (OH)2 O2 + 2H2O 4Fe (OH)3
This product, called 'yellow rust' actually corresponds to Fe2O3.H2O. (ii) If the 'supply of oxygen is
limited', the corrosion product may be even black anhydrous magnetite, Fe3O4.
5.0 Action Methodology Followed: -
Our group decided on the topic for the subject. The topic name was oxygen
absorption mechanism. we studied Rusting of iron in neutral aqueous
solutions (like NaCl) in presence of atmospheric oxygen resulting in to surface
of iron coated by thin layer of iron oxide. Then we prepared the Chart based
on the topic. The teammates referred to the library books, various published
textbooks based on the subject. For extra reference we used Wikipedia too.
2. Processes that produce certain types of corrosion and recognize the factors that affect the
rate of corrosion.
3. Once this is understood, the information is applied to all phases of design engineering,
including materials selection, methods of prevention, and physical design.
4. The final step must be the determination of the feasibility of the proposed engineering design
This discussion deals with each of these specific areas that make up the total design.
