# Free-Body Diagram: The free-body diagram of the boy and skateboard system is shown in
Figure. Here, Wb, Wsb, and N are non-impulsive forces. The pair of impulsive forces F resulting
from the impact during landing cancel each other out since they are internal to the system.

15.53 Block A has a mass of 2 kg and slides into an open ended box B with a
velocity of 2 m/s. If the box B has a mass of 3 kg and rests on top of a plate P
that has a mass of 3 kg, determine the distance the plate moves after it stops
sliding on the floor. Also, how long is it after impact before all motion ceases?
The coefficient of kinetic friction between the box and the plate is μk = 0.2,
and between the plate and the floor 𝜇′k = 0.4. Also, the coefficient of static
friction between the plate and the floor is 𝜇′s = 0.5.

15.22 A 50-kg crate rests against a stop block s, which prevents the crate from
moving down the plane. If the coefficient of static and kinetic friction
between the crate and the plane are μs=0.3 and μk=0.2, respectively,
determine the time needed for the force F to give the crate a speed of 2 m/s
up the plane. The force always acts parallel to the plane and has a
magnitude of F = (300t) N, where t is in seconds. Hint: First determine the
time needed to overcome static friction and start the crate moving.

SOLUTION

The time needed to overcome friction is determined from statics:

15.38 A railroad car having a mass of 15 Mg is coasting at 1.5 m/s on a horizontal track. At the same time another car
having a mass of 12 Mg is coasting at 0.75 m/s in the opposite direction. If the cars meet and couple together,
determine the speed of both cars just after the coupling. Find the difference between the total kinetic energy
before and after coupling has occurred, and explain qualitatively what happened to this energy.
